The MMA world lost a potentially hard-hitting co-main event between Uriah Hall and Vitor Belfort at last night’s (Sun. January 14, 2017) UFC St. Louis when Hall was unable to weigh in and forced to withdraw from the bout following a scary scene where he reportedly fainted and had a seizure.

The tough last-minute withdrawal put the frightening weight-cutting practices of the sport into the crosshairs yet again, and many asked if the UFC needed to make more effort to curb such drastic cuts and the subsequent adverse effects they have on a growing number of high-profile bouts.

However, if we’re to believe UFC president Dana White, Hall’s situation wasn’t one of just the weight cut becoming a health issue. According to the UFC exec in a post-fight scrum via MMA Fighting, Hall wasn’t taking his training at the UFC Performance Insitute in Las Vegas seriously, and had even gone as far as going to Los Angeles to party a week before his fight with Belfort:

“I have a very long relationship with Uriah, I like him very much personally. But the guy’s at the UFC (Performance Institutute) said he doesn’t take it serious. He doesn’t take his training serious, he doesn’t do what anybody tells him. He does his own thing.

“A week before the fight, he went to L.A. and was hanging out in L.A. in clubs and stuff. So, not good. So I’m going to talk to him, he texted me tonight. He’ s back in his room, obviously he’s not good, and if you don’t cut weight the right way and you don’t do what you’re supposed to do, this is what happens.”

The discussion about weight cutting and the issues created by it will most likely continue to grow larger, but White insisted there are more healthy ways to cut weight.

For the fighters who are unable to do it the right way, he said, the best decision is to move up a weight class in hopes of recreating their careers as several fighters such as Rafael dos Anjos have in recent years:

“What I think they need to think about is fight at 205. Fight at 205 or show up and do what you’re supposed to do. There’s ways to cut weight properly and safely. You need to start doing that. That’s why we are encouraging everybody to come to the UFC Performance Institute. These guys down there, all the people that go there and do what they’re told to do and do it the right way, cut weight safely.

“The guys who don’t listen, this is what happens. And much like the Kelvin Gastelums and the Johny Hendricks and the other people out there – if you can’t make that weight, then fight at a higher weight division.”

MMAjunkie’s Mike Bohn reported on White’s recent comments regarding a meeting between interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and top title contender Khabib Nurmagomedov:

McGregor hasn’t fought in the Octagon since he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight championship at UFC 205 in November 2016.

It was announced over the weekend that middleweight star Uriah Hall, who was set to fight Vitor Belfort in a middleweight bout at UFC St. Louis, wouldn’t be weighing for the scheduled bout.

Belfort did make weight at 186 pounds for what was supposed to be his retirement fight.

UFC President Dana White revealed during the post-fight show on FOX Sports 1 on Sunday night that the promotion offered Belfort a replacement fight at this event as well as a fight at UFC 220 this Saturday night in Boston. Belfort turned down both fights.

“This thing went down, we worked quickly and we got Vitor a fight,” White said (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “He could have fought tonight, he chose not to. We got him a fight in Boston. He chose not to fight in Boston. He chose not to fight then. I don’t know who the opponents were, but they told him we got him two fights.”

It’s been well documented that Hall had a seizure as a result of a bad weight cut that ultimately led to him being hospitalized until Sunday evening.

Although White did not disclose the opponents that they offered the MMA Legend, Belfort has gone on record by stating that he would like to have a fight with former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping in London on March 17.

It should be noted that it appears that fight is not going to happen as Bisping has made it known that he has no interest in fighting Belfort.

“When I get back to Vegas and get back in the office, I will obviously talk to Vitor, I’ll talk to Mike,” White said. “We’ll see what happens.”

Belfort shared this message on his official Instagram account asking the promotion for his money due to him doing all the training and preparation and was able to weigh-in successfully.

“First of all I would just like to say THANK YOU! Thank you all! Everyone who accompanies me, cheers for me and my family! But I especially want to make a special thanks to the columnist @ chicobarney for the subject that he published on the site uol.com.br Reading the q he wrote reminded me of every moment described in the text. The criticisms, my feelings, dreams, ideas etc … In a moment like hj, in which the now does not make much sense to me … Difficult to understand after so much dedication and sacrifice.

From having psychologically prepared myself to retire from a sport that I basically helped to create … and that simply did not happen … I have conflicting feelings about what happened … But as I said, reading the story I also remembered q much of what I did, many of the ideas and much of what I said years ago, did not make any sense to me. I just believed that it would work … Q Vale Tudo at the time would become a sport.

That we fighters, we were not barbarians digging up and yes athletes. That we had the potential to be “a company” to represent brands and values. None of this made much sense at the time, but inside my heart, it always did … My farewell fight did not take place as I had planned, but in my heart I know somehow up there, EVERYTHING that will make sense. Again, as I have always done and often been ridiculed for it. I give my life in the hands of my Father who is in heaven.

Because of him always came my peace … Bjo in the hearts of all vcs. Now a message to @ufc. I’m waiting for my pgto @ufc after all, I did what had to be done (I trained, I was present in the week of the fight, I hit my weight ….) Where’s the respect !?”

As críticas, meus sentimentos, sonhos, ideias etc… Pq Dele sempre veio a minha paz…

We now know who will challenge Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title next.

UFC President Dana White made it clear during the UFC St. Louis post-show on FOX Sports 1 that former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos would be the next title challenger.

Woodley, who is coming off a recent shoulder surgery, has stated pubicly that he doesn’t think there are any clear contenders in the division right now. However, White disagrees and plans on making this fight happen.

“As soon as he’s healthy, obviously, RDA is the fight to make, especially the way he looked in the Robbie Lawler fight,” said White (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie). “We’re just waiting for Tyron to get healthy.”

Despite this announcement by White, Woodley still has his sights set on former middleweight and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

Keep in mind that this fight is not likely to happen anytime soon due to GSP vacating the middleweight title shortly after he won it from Michael Bisping back in November at UFC 217 and him dealing with health issues.

Woodley continued to state that GSP is the opponent he wants and that he will tell fighters such as RDA, Colby Covington, and Kamaru Usman to wait a little longer.

“I don’t really see a fight that makes sense for me right now,” Woodley told MMAjunkie backstage at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, which hosted the FS1-televised event on Sunday.

“There’s not any clear No. 1 guys. Some guys say RDA. We’ve got a guy who’s bumping his gums; I won’t even give (Covington’s) name any attention. I think the deck needs to be shuffled a little bit more, and maybe a fight that’s more substantial for my career and my legacy will present itself.

“I’m not going to say (dos Anjos and Covington) need to fight. Fall back, take a seat. I’m not going anywhere. I’m here for a while. I’m not on the cusp of giving this up. One by one, everybody will get their chance to see what it’s all about. But I really want to fight Georges St-Pierre.”

“If he’s still fighting, he needs to come and see me,” Woodley said.
