JOSE ALDO WANTS ANTHONY PETTIS FOR MONEY FIGHT.

It seems everyone’s catching on to the new economic turn of the UFC. Previous nice guys from Tyron Woodley, Demetrius “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, to now Featherweight interim champ Jose Aldo are calling for big money fights! Where did they learn this current trend? Daddy Dana, that’s who.

“No more Mr. nice guy…”

In a recent interview with Brazilain TV show Revista Combate, Aldo explained that he’s looking for a big money fight, and if it’s not with Mcgregor, his close second would be former lightweight champion and kick heard round the world performer Anthony Pettis.

“I’m already frustrated that it might happen, but we’ll see,” Aldo recently told Brazilian TV show Revista Combate. “Every night I ask ‘give me one more chance to get in there again with him and I know it won’t happen again.’ but if it’s not him, I think I’d prefer to fight Pettis. I with them learned that I don’t have to look at the promotion’s side, the title run. A fight with Pettis would sell a lot more than Holloway.

He’s right. While Max Holloway has been on a 9 fight win streak since losing to Conor McGregor in 2013, the Anthony Pettis match up is a much bigger fight. And while it may be “fair” for Holloway to get the next big matchup, we all know that term is very fluid in the world of UFC.  Plus, Aldo held the belt for 5 years and is now the #1 contender in a division where the champion is all but vacant, he should have some say.

“Holloway is way tougher than Pettis today,” Aldo said. “‘Do Bronx’ (Oliveira) was winning the fight, but (his cardio) goes down drastically during the fight. I think that a fight with Pettis would sell a lot and is way easier for me. If I had to choose one of them it would be him because it sells more and I have a better chance, but I respect him.”

“I’m trying to get a fight at this UFC card in New York, but we’ll see what ‘Dede’ (Pederneiras) has to say when he comes back. ‘Dede’ is (in Cleveland) now for a meeting with Dana to decide our future. I hope everything goes right. If it’s not against (McGregor) we fight for the undisputed belt. We’ll see.

Before we get into the issue of whether Jose Aldo is ducking anyone let’s not forget that this fight was set to happen years ago. After seeing Jose Aldo defend his belt against Frankie Edgar at UFC 156, Pettis texted Dana White saying he would accept the fight. Pettis later had to pull out due to a knee injury.

“Something interesting happened about 10 minutes ago,” White said at the postfight news conference. “Anthony Pettis said, ‘I want to go to 145 and fight Jose Aldo.’ He told me he’ll make 145.”  –Dana White (2013)

Ultimately it comes down to Dana. Even though the organization has new owners, it seems they’re still leaving him to headline the sport aspect of the UFC. While either fight would be a barn burner, it would be nice to see these two wizards go head to head.

Smart move, or coward’s journey? What do you guys think of Jose Aldo calling out the featherweight newcomer?

24-year-old Mickey Gall picked up the third victory of his professional mixed martial arts career at last weekend’s (September 10, 2016) UFC 203 by destroying former professional wrestler CM Punk in the very first round of their main card bout. During his post-fight interview with color commentator Joe Rogan, Gall said that he was interested in fighting ‘killers’ from now on, specifically calling out fellow young gun “Super” Sage Northcutt for a clash at November 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York.

UFC President Dana White was quick to comment on the idea, saying that Northcutt’s team was also interested in the fight and that the UFC would make it happen, although that doesn’t seem to be the case as of now.

According to Jonathan Shrager, who recently spoke with Northcutt’s father, Mark, “Super Sage” was never approached regarding the potential scrap and he’s also currently dealing with a staph infection and will be unable to compete at UFC 205:

Northcutt is coming off of a decision victory over Enrique Martin at July 9’s UFC 200, a win that extended his UFC record to 3-1. Prior to that, he had suffered a disappointing loss to Bryan Barberena last January. “Super Sage” has competed both at lightweight and welterweight, but as his father said, he’d be willing to meet Gall at 170-pounds when the time is right.

The bout certainly makes sense given the stage each fighter is at, but obviously Northcutt will need to return to full health before the two could sign on the dotted line.

Finally we got to see CM Punk’s MMA debut at UFC 203. After 18 months of speculation and hype, the former pro wrestling star stepped foot in the octagon. The 37-year old faced 2-0 Mickey Gall on the main card in Ohio this past Saturday, but it was not a good night for the ex-WWE superstar. Much like Brock Lesnar before him, the reality of Punk’s first UFC fight was harsh at best. The main difference between the former UFC heavyweight champion and (real name) Phillip Brooks is actual experience in competition.

Lacking any amateur experience in fighting or even real life competitive sports showed for CM Punk at UFC 203. Gall was able to sack the pro wrestling veteran with ease, following up with some punches on the ground before the inevitable submission. You have to respect Punk for stepping in to fight in the octagon with zero prior fights. That being said, there’s plenty to lament about his MMA debut too.

The CM Punk Experiment

Contrary to popular belief, UFC president Dana White says CM punk fighting was not an experiment. While talking to Fight Network after UFC 203, White revealed his reasons for allowing Punk a shot in the octagon. He also says it’s probably not a good idea for the former WWE champion to take his next fight in the UFC.

“I wouldn’t know if it was an experiment,” White replied. “I became friends with him, he’s a nice guy and I have a lot of respect for him. He wanted me to give him a shot, I gave him a shot.”

“It’s probably not a good idea for him to take his next fight in the UFC. Like with Brock Lesnar, this is a tough place to learn. Even against a guy who’s 2-0, its tough.”

Off To The Amateur Leagues?

It seems CM Punk wants to keep fighting, albeit probably not for the UFC next. Speaking with the media during the post-fight presser, as quoted by MMAFighting.com, Brooks says it isn’t over just yet.

“My initial venture into this was gonna be at the lowest level,” Punk said at the post-fight press conference. “This opportunity just got presented to myself and I would have been a fool to say no. I don’t know what happens from here on out. What if I get cut? I don’t know. I think that’s a possibility. Do I want that to happen? No. But who’s to say where I go from here? I don’t know. I definitely want to keep going.”

Just moments after spoiling the mixed martial arts debut of former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) champion CM Punk at UFC 203 yesterday (September 10, 2016), Mickey Gall took yet another opportunity with the mic in his hands to call out a fellow fighter to throw down with.

Gall called out fellow Looking For A Fight alumni ‘Super’ Sage Northcutt to a scrap at the UFC’s upcoming mega-show from Madison Square Garden in November for UFC 205.

That fight seemed to spark interest amongst the MMA fan-base, and apparently Sage’s team as well.

UFC President Dana White spoke to Megan Olivi shortly after the pay-per-view (PPV) event and revealed that the 20-year-old’s camp is also interested in throwing down with Gall:

“After he called him out Sage’s team hit me up, and they want the fight so we’ll make it happen. “

Northcutt (8-1) is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Enrique Marin at UFC 200 this past July, and is a young up-and-coming prospect who is competing in both the UFC’s 155 and 170-pound divisions.

The young Katy, Texas Native suffered his first professional MMA career loss under the UFC’s banner when he was submitted by Bryan Barberena in the second round of their contest back in January via arm-triangle choke.

Northcutt has since bounced back with a win over Marin, and a bout with Gall is certainly going to be a crucial test for both young men going forward in their professional combat careers.

You can check out the video in which White reveals the possibility of Gall vs. Northcutt here:
