Stipe Miocic isn’t focused on fighting during the COVID-19 pandemic that is impacting the entire world.

Many countries are in lockdown while the sports world is shut down due to the virus. The UFC has postponed three events but Dana White remains adamant UFC 249 on April 18 will be their return event.

Yet, for UFC heavyweight champion in Stipe Miocic, he says the trilogy against Daniel Cormier was set for the summer. But now, with the pandemic shutting gyms down, Miocic says he is focusing on his other job of being a firefighter. So, he isn’t thinking about fighting at all.

“It’s looking like summer. But with this going on right now, honestly I’m not even worried about that,” Miocic said in an interview with UFC reporter Megan Olivi (via MMA Junkie). “I’m worried about firefighting, and the paramedics out there and I got to do what I got to do. There’s so many people out there that need help. There’s people that are going to stay at home and some of them might get sick. I’m putting myself in harm’s way and I’m okay with that. But I’ve got to make sure when I’m home at the end of the day my family is okay.”

This is no doubt an interesting time for everyone. Miocic is deciding to help people out firefighting instead of fighting. Although UFC president Dana White says he has a new location for UFC 249, many fans believe the fight won’t happen due to travel bans and the status if COVID-19.

When Stipe Miocic will return to the Octagon is to be seen. But, the champ did recently get cleared to return following an eye injury. Last time out, he TKO’d Daniel Cormier to regain the heavyweight belt.

Stipe Miocic is once again the heavyweight champion. He reclaimed the belt by beating Daniel Cormier by TKO in the fourth round at UFC 241.

Yet, it didn’t appear he was going to win the fight early on. Cormier used his wrestling and striking effectively and was up 30-27 on many people’s scorecards heading into the fourth round. For Miocic, he was not happy with his performance early on.

“It was terrible (the beginning of the fight), my God. It seemed that I could not fight,” Miocic said to Combate (as transcribed by BJPENN.com). “I thought, ‘should I be here? Then I started to open more, found the distance and began to see openings. Okay, we’re fine, I get it now”

Then in the fourth, he started to attack the body which set up the TKO win. Why he decided to switch the gameplan like that was simple. He was watching past fights from Cormier’s where he saw Anderson Silva have a ton of success hitting ‘DC’ in the body. So, after his original game plan didn’t work he remembered that fight which helped him win.

“In the third round (I decided to change my strategy). I started to see it between the third and fourth rounds. My coaches were talking to me and I said ‘let’s attack his body’. He leaves it really open and nobody takes advantage of it,” he explained. “I remember Anderson Silva hit him with a body kick and that hurt him a little bit, so I thought of attacking him there, and it worked.”

Now, with the help of Anderson Silva, Stipe Miocic is once again the heavyweight champion of the world.

Stipe Miocic challenges UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier to a rematch with the strap being on the line.

Cormier scored a KO win over Miocic to win the UFC heavyweight title in the main event of the UFC 226 pay-per-view event. This fight took place in July at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, which marked history as Cormier was a two-division champion. DC has since relinquished the UFC light heavyweight title.

Cormier is expected to fight former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar with the title being on the line sometime in the first quarter of 2019. This has caused Miocic to feel upset due to him holding the title and defending it for a historic amount of time.

Challenge

This makes him believe that he should get a rematch. However, it appears that will not happen. Miocic is not backing down as he recently fired out a tweet with the challenge of a rematch being in mind. He wrote the following:

“.@dc_mma March 20 is coming up quick. Let’s settle this and get this fight on the books before you blow the candles out on that cake.”

Daniel Cormier has dropped a teaser on why his upcoming fight with Stipe Miocic is so important.

The UFC light heavyweight champion is slated to fight UFC heavyweight champion in the main event of the upcoming UFC 226 pay-per-view event.

This will be a historic moment as in the past there has been no light heavyweight champion that has ever moved up to challenge the heavyweight champion.

Thus, if DC can get his hand raised inside of the Octagon then he knows it would be a huge moment in his pro-MMA career.

Cormier spoke with Ariel Helwani on this week’s episode of the Helwani Show on ESPN+ to talk about the importance of this fight.

“This is the biggest fight of my life. This is the biggest fight I’ve ever been in,” Cormier said ahead of UFC 226. “I have played a major part in some of the biggest fights in the UFC. I was at UFC 182, I was a big part of UFC 200, I was supposed to headline it. I was a massive part of UFC 214 and now this one.

“I have been involved in some of the biggest moments of the sports’ young history and I’m excited about it and honored to be put in those positions. The UFC must trust me to put me in those positions over again and over again knowing that I’m going to show up and I’m going to do my thing.”

“This is the battle for the baddest man on the planet,” Cormier teased (transcript courtesy of MMANytt).

UFC 226 is set to take place on Saturday, July 6, 2018, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at 6:30 p.m. ET.

What’s interesting about this fight is the fact that there has been no beef between Cormier and Miocic but rather all respect.

“It does feel good to respect my opponent,” Cormier said. “I have the utmost respect for Stipe Miocic. If I would have just watched him from afar, as I did prior to the show, this would have been a lot easier. After being around him and learning about his journey and also his commitment to his city and his commitment to doing things the right way, it became where this had to be something astronomical to make this happen and it was something astronomical.”

“I think that’s what people imagine. Stipe is going to knock Daniel out, he’s the small guy, the small guy’s got to do something special,” Cormier said. “All I got to be is Daniel Cormier and I will win this fight. I love Stipe, I think he’s great but I think this is a fantastic matchup. Styles make fights and I think that our styles together combined will make for a fantastic evening in Vegas.”

Daniel Cormier is one again fighting at heavyweight, where he was undefeated and won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. Now, the UFC light heavyweight champion will be taking on heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, and a big money fight with Brock Lesnar looms ahead for the winner.

Cormier gave his thoughts on a potential fight with Brock Lesnar during the UFC’s 25th Anniversary press conference (via MMA Fighting):

“That thing never happens unless I get past Stipe, but just hearing out loud was like, oh my goodness,” Cormier said. “Hey, I know that when I fight Jon Jones, I make a lot of money. I know that if I was to ever fight a Brock Lesnar, I’m going to make even more money than I’ve ever made in entire life. And ultimately, championships and money is why we do this. I don’t care for all the other stuff. I want to get paid. I’m almost 40, the door’s about to close on me, so why not ride out into the sunset with a massive payday? Truckloads of money. Back up Brinks truck to Gilroy, California if you fight Brock Lesnar, I’m telling you.”

“He told me last time, right? When that thing broke that he was fighting at UFC 200, I said, ‘Big Brock, is it Christmas morning in the Cormier household?’ He goes, ‘Merry Christmas, DC. You’re welcome.’ That’s what he told me. He knows that the money’s coming. When he’s on your card or if you’re fighting against him, he knows that you’re getting paid.”

Cormier most recently defeated surging prospect Volkan Oezdemir with second-round strikes after repeatedly taking down the striker and battering him on the feet. It was a dominant performance from Cormier and coupled with Miocic’s own impressive win over Francis Ngannou on that same card, the super fight between the two became a reality.

Meanwhile, former UFC heavyweight champion Lesnar has bounced back between WWE and the UFC, most recently beating Mark Hunt at UFC 200 before the result was overturned to a no-contest following a failed USADA tests by Lesnar.

Lately, talk has picked up over his return to the Octagon, with the specific intent of getting him in there with the winner of Cormier Vs. Miocic, which takes places at UFC 226 on July 7.

If Cormier were indeed to beat Miocic, how would a fight with Lesnar look for the light heavyweight champion?
