Making his Octagon return this weekend at UFC 279 in a 180lbs catchweight clash with fellow exciting striker, Kevin Holland, streaking welterweight contender, Daniel Rodriguez has welcomed the opportunity to knock his fellow Californian from his pedestal amid his recent string of wins.
Out of action since August of last year, Rodriguez, who entered the Octagon for the seventh time at that UFC Vegas 35 event, managed to secure his most high-profile victory in the organization to date with an impressive unanimous decision win against former interim title challenger, Kevin Lee.
In the midst of a two-fight winning run at welterweight since his return to the division, Riverside striker, Holland defeated promotional alum, Alex Oliveira at UFC 272 back in March with a second round knockout at his first outing in the welterweight division, before then submitting common-foe, Tim Means with a second round D’Arce choke win.
Daniel Rodriguez welcomes the chance to shut Kevin Holland’s mouth at UFC 279
Welcoming the opportunity to fight Holland in this weekend’s all-Californian matchup, Rodriguez claimed he was itching to “shut up” the fan-favorite contender.
“Man, I see it being a fun-ass fight,” Daniel Rodriguez said of his UFC 279 return during a recent interview with Inside Fighting. “He’s (Kevin Holland) definitely going to come out swinging and put up a fight. He has been calling me out for a long time, the whole time I’ve been injured he;s been trying to call me out. I was scheduled to fight him, he got injured so it was kind of one of those things, it was a fight that was going to happen sooner or later.”
“I honestly see myself coming our with the ‘W’,” Daniel Rodriguez explained. “… Kevin Holland – I finally get to shut that motherf*cker up.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
Boasting an impressive 6-1 record during his Octagon tenure, beyond a sole loss to former Cage Warriors champion, Nicolas Dalby, Rodriguez has defeated Tim Means, Gabriel Green, Dwight Grant, Mike Perry, and Preston Parsons.

‘Trailblazer’ Kevin Holland is getting ready for a catchweight showdown against Daniel Rodriguez at UFC 279 on September 10. The US-born athlete recently spoke with TMZ regarding this fight and Holland explained that ‘D-Rod’ was not his first pick.
While speaking with TMZ in a video interview, the 29-year-old fighter said that he was offered a big-name fight at welterweight but it was so far away that he wanted to take a fight in the interim time. The UFC offered him a list of names and Holland chose Neil Magny but the dates didn’t quite line up. Holland explained:
“They gave me a list of names. Of course, I said yes to every single name they gave me. They asked which one I liked the most, I had actually named Neil Magny, this would have been October 15th. I thought that was going to be a great fight … They were like, we want you to go September 10, can you make 170 pounds by then? I was like, It’s not ideal, but yeah I can … I had said yes once before [to Daniel Rodriguez], what’s the difference now? Let’s go, let’s do it.”
This fight was previously booked at the end of 2020 for Holland’s debut in welterweight. But, ‘Trailblazer’ sustained an injury and the initial fight was called off. Holland was quite complimentary to his upcoming opponent commenting on how tough he is. The US-born fighter said:
“D-Rod is really, really tough. Super tough guy. Probably finish him within 15 seconds.”
Kevin Holland vs Daniel Rodriguez at Catchweight?
Why is Kevin Holland vs Daniel Rodriguez at Catchweight? According to Holland, this fight was initially booked for welterweight (170 lbs) however, one of the competitors was unable to make weight. Holland said:
“Somebody couldn’t make weight, not me… [He] couldn’t even make 175 … I was like, why don’t we make it 185? But I don’t think they liked the idea of me being ranked in two weight classes so they made it 180.”
‘Trailblazer’ also does not seem phased at all by the trash talk coming from his upcoming opponent. Regarding some of the things ‘D-Rod’ has been saying, Holland responded:
“Seems like he’s forcing it, trying to sell some stuff. Best one he had was the one with Schmo when he was talking about firing up in the press conference … Other than that [Thumbs up] do your thing brother.”
Kevin Holland is coming off two consecutive stoppage wins against Tim Means and Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira. ‘D-Rod’ is on an impressive three-fight win streak over fighters such as Kevin Lee, Preston Parsons, and Mike Perry. Holland and Rodriguez are booked to meet at UFC 279 on September 10 in a catchweight bout at 180 lbs.

Kevin Holland and Daniel Rodriguez could possibly be squaring off on September 10th, at UFC 279 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
UFC 279 was one of the weakest cards in recent memory, but this past week a few interesting fights have been added to the card to spice things up. The UFC also added Li Jingliang vs Tony Ferguson to the bout, as Ferguson will be making a move to the welterweight division, after his last 19 bouts have been in the lightweight division.
This bout between Holland and Rodriguez should be a banger, if it is made. Holland announced the bout on an Instagram post. He was promoting a new song he mad called “Neck” and after the montage of him fighting, he dropped the news he’d be fighting ‘D-Rod’ on September 10th. There has been some speculation on if the bout is a sure thing as of now, but it seems to be trending in the direction of being officially added.
Holland has been calling for this fight since he made the move to welterweight, as he had been going up against wrestlers most of the time. Holland’s wrestling has been improving, but a fight where he will mostly be striking has been on his wishlist for a while. The two were supposed to square off back in May of 2020, but it ultimately fell through.
Kevin Holland has won both of his bouts since making his debut in the uFC welterweight division
Holland has a TKO finish over Alex Oliveira and a submission win over Tim Means. Holland received a ‘Performance of the Night’ for both of those finishes. Holland is a dangerous striker, as he has five wins in the UFC via KO/TKO. His counterpart is also a fantastic striker, and will stand and bang with the best of them. Rodriguez most notably beat former title challenger Kevin Lee on short notice, handedly.
Kevin Holland has announced he’s set to make the move down to welterweight and is willing to make his divisional debut against striker Daniel Rodriguez.

Kevin Holland has announced he’s set to make the move down to welterweight and is willing to make his divisional debut against striker Daniel Rodriguez.
Holland burst onto the scene and into the middleweight top 10 with a record-breaking five straight wins in 2020. Alongside a split decision victory over Darren Stewart, “Trailblazer” recorded memorable knockouts against Anthony Hernandez, Charlie Ontiveros, Joaquin Buckley, and Brazilian legend Jacaré Souza.
After some talk of a possible return to welterweight, where he fought six times in regional promotions, Holland announced the move in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
“In 2022, I’m taking my talents to the 170lb division”
During a recent appearance on The Schmozone Podcast, Holland addressed his decision to make the drop down to 170 pounds. The 21-7 professional discussed his previous attempt to make the switch, and claimed his attitude and work at the UFC Performance Institute has left him much-better placed to make a successful adjustment this time around.
“We just did a little nutrition thing, a little scan and everything. I could burn a few more carbs in my sleep, which would be awesome, but we think that could possibly pick up and change when I’ve possibly eaten a little more healthy and I’m actually in camp working out, and eliminate some stress. But yeah, I’m completely green to make 170. I haven’t tried it in a long time. Last time I tried it I failed. I didn’t know how to cut weight back then, I didn’t have the people that I have in my life today, I wasn’t as disciplined as I am today. I’d love to give it a shot.
“I’m actually gonna do a test cut. See how that feels. As long as that feels good, I think I’m good to go.”
In another interaction with The Schmo, Holland discussed who he could face in his divisional debut next year. If Daniel Rodriguez is ready to fight in the first quarter of 2022, “Big Mouth” revealed he’s keen to face the brawler.
“At 170, D-Rod said he was a little hurt right now, I don’t know when he plans on being better, but if he’s good around January-February, that’d be nice.”
Rodriguez Open To Welcoming Holland To 170 With Striking Battle
Not many fighters have been as consistent and successful as Daniel Rodriguez over the past couple of years. Since joining the UFC last February, “D-Rod” has fought seven times, recording six victories and a sole defeat. The one blemish on his promotional record came by way of controversial decision against Nicolas Dalby, a result that many fans and pundits dispute.
Rodriguez is happy for that big fight to come against a two-time UFC headliner in Kevin Holland. Also speaking to The Schmo, “D-Rod” expressed his willingness to welcome the 29-year-old to the UFC welterweight roster with a fan-favorite striking battle.
Despite recently undergoing hand surgery and potentially requiring another procedure, the Californian suggested he’d be willing to choose against another operation if a fight with Holland is on the table for early 2022.
“I love it, I love it. I appreciate the callout, homie. I understand you wanna strike. if there’s anyone to strike in the division it’s me, especially coming and dropping down into my weight class. We were scheduled to fight my second fight in the UFC. I stepped up on two weeks’ notice, as usual, and he got injured. I think there was a lot of questions unanswered there and I think it would be a great opportunity if me and him finally just squared out and gave the people a good-ass show. He wants to strike, I’m a striker, and we could do it anytime.
“The only thing is I’ve got this injury I’m going through right now. But if you ask me, he’s gonna be the reason why I don’t get the surgery.”

Kevin Holland has a few names in mind when it comes to his debut in the welterweight division.
Holland has made it clear that his next fight will be at 170 and has no desire to fight Kyle Daukaus after their last fight ended in a no contest. The two had a head to head clash that gave Daukaus the upper hand. He was able to finish the fight, but after replay they deemed it a no contest, since Holland was clearly knocked out from the blow.
Holland has also made it clear he wants to go toe to toe with another striker inside the octagon. A couple names that came to mind were Daniel Rodriguez and Li Jingliang. Holland was being interviewed by ‘The Schmo’ when he name dropped those fighters.
“So at 170, D-Rod said he’s a little hurt right now and I don’t know when he’s gonna get better, but if he’s ready by January or February, that would be nice.If not, the guy that Chimaev just fought [Jingliang]. You wanna strike? I’m down to strike baby, let me know. Probably somebody that likes to bang. Still down to test the wrestling, but can we squabble a little bit?”
Rodriguez is coming off a win against Kevin Lee and holds a 6-1 record in the UFC. Jingliang is coming off a loss against Khamzat Chimaev, where he got submitted in the first round. Both fighters are very dangerous on their feet.
A fight against Rodriguez or Jingliang would be enticing for Kevin Holland
Both those fighters as Holland said, like to stand and throw hands. That would be a welcoming change for Holland who has been matched up recently with guys that like to grapple. Holland has always joked about his wrestling and even cracks wise during fights with ‘DC’.
He has even trained with AKA to improve his grappling, but everyone knows Holland wants to put on a show with his hands. The move up to 170 is an intriguing move and many are interested to see how Holland matches up against some of the top guys.
