When it comes to mentally preparing themselves to be locked inside the Octagon with another highly trained fighter, UFC stars have tried all kinds of weird and wonderful methods to get in the right frame of mind for the battle ahead.

In this article, we’ll look at 10 of the strangest pre-fight rituals adopted by MMA stars over the years; from those born out of superstition and habitual behavior, through to those undertaken just for the sheer hell of it!

Matt Lindland

Matt Lindland went to extreme lengths to try and gain an advantage over his opponents during both his wrestling and mixed martial arts career’s.

‘The Law’ would avoid showering in the week leading up to his fights in an attempt to repulse his opponents and make their lives misery whenever they got near to him in the cage.

Given that Lindland was an expert grappler who once won an Olympic wrestling silver medalist, that meant that a lot of fighters ended up being forced to get up close and personal with him over the years, whether they wanted to be or not.

Most competitors just grinned and bore it, silently suffering through the stench, but after earning a split decision victory over Lindland at WFA: King Of The Streets in 2006, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson couldn’t resist calling out the wrestler over his hygiene, or lack thereof.

”Man, that was like fighting a big-ass smelly skunk,” Rampage declared in his post-fight interview. “Matt you need to take a shower man.”

The UFC did some spring cleaning this week as they cut several fighters from their roster. The UFC will do this from time to time to make room for new fighters that they sign and to cut the dead weight from their roster that they see fit.

Some of the more notable names that were cut include Danny Castillo and Mike Pierce. The UFC also released several other fighters.

Castillo (17-10) is a member of Team Alpha and lost his last four bouts. Three of those were by split decisions. His latest loss came to Nik Lentz last month at UFC on FOX 17. Castillo, who is 36-years-old, got his start in WEC back in 2008.

Pierce (17-7) was on a four-fight winning streak before losing to Rousimar Palhares in October 2013. He was out for two years following the controversial heel hook loss and returned at TUF 22 Finale but lost that bout to Ryan LaFlare via unanimous decision.

Here is a list of fighters that were cut:

Danny Castillo

Mike Pierce

Steve Montgomery

Akbarh Arreola

Steven Kennedy

Konstantin Erokhin

Marcin Wrzosek

Marcio Alexandre

Valmir Lazaro

Hayder Hassan

Leo Kuntz

Charlie Brenneman To Be Viciously Knocked Out One Final Time in the UFC

(Looks like someone should have pulled mummy guard.)

As a huge Pros vs. Joes fan back in the day, I’ve always had a soft spot for Charlie Brenneman*. This fact has made it all the more difficult to watch his last four UFC appearances, which have seen “The Spaniard” dominated by Erick Silva, TKO’d by Kyle Noke, rocked, then submitted by Beneil Dariush, and brutally knocked out by Danny Castillo (see above) in his last appearance at UFC 172. Even worse, all but one of those losses have occurred in the first round, with two of them happening in under two minutes. There was also that Anthony Johnson KO, but I think we should all just forget that ever happened. Brenneman probably has.

It is perhaps unfair to declare that Brenneman is one of those “raw” fighters who is talented enough to dominate the local scene while simply not being up to snuff at the UFC level (although his out-of-UFC record would support that argument). He has picked up 4 UFC wins in his career, after all, but his past handful of appearances have resulted in anything but triumph. They’ve been downright difficult to watch, if I’m being completely honest.

Regardless, it looks like Brenneman will be receiving another shot in the UFC. That’s according to Brenneman’s manager Mike Constantino, at least, who recently told MMAJunkie that, “Charlie’s going to get another chance. Charlie will be back and will get another chance. We’re looking at the fall for him.”

And once again, the strange, almost indecipherable dichotomy of the UFC’s hiring/firing policies is revealed…

And once again, the strange, almost indecipherable dichotomy of the UFC’s hiring/firing policies is revealed. One week, we’re being told that the UFC’s roster is too bloated to support the likes of say, Ben Askren, and the next, we’re being told that guys like Brenneman and Bobby Voelker will fight another day despite four fight skids in their respective weight classes. Even Paulo Thiago was recently granted a four fight extension, having dropping six out of his past eight UFC contests. Meanwhile, guys like Jake Shields, Yushin Okami, and Jon Fitch are being written off as has-beens on their way out the door.

Today’s lesson in UFC hypocrisy: ‘Tis worse to be a has-been than a never-was.

*What? You didn’t forget that he was the season one winner of that long-forgotten show, did you? Well he was, and that honor is tantamount to winning a season of TUF nowadays, IMHO.
