Middleweight contender Darren Till has explained why a fight with 185lb king Israel Adesanya will be easier than the one he has just had with Robert Whittaker in the UFC Fight Island 3 main event.

The Englishman dropped to a decision defeat against Whittaker in a highly competitive and cagey fight. It was just Till’s second fight at middleweight after previously beating Kelvin Gastelum in his divisional debut.

Whittaker was making his first Octagon appearance since losing the title to Adesanya back at UFC 243 in October 2019. The former champ recovered from a difficult first round to win the fight on all three judges scorecards.

Adesanya immediately took to social media post-fight to express his belief he will still fight Till down the line despite ‘The Gorilla’ suffering a setback on Yas Island, he wrote.

“I still wanna fight Till one day. His striking is beautiful. Stay up Darren!”

Speaking to media at the UFC Fight Island 3 post-fight press conference Till expressed his belief that an eventual fight against Adesanya will be easier than fighting Whittaker because ‘The Last Stylbender’ is a pure striker.“Haha, another good friend.” Till said about Adesanya’s post-fight comments. “I’m going to have to layoff direct messaging him for a while. All I do is scream in the videos to him and the Instagram messages. But, I’ve got a lot of respect for this lad. I think he’s a great fighter. You know what, this is no disrespect to him, but I think he’s probably an easier fight for me than Rob because we both.. we’d probably have a great striking battle. Rob’s a bit different because he mixes it up. Israel is a great MMA fighter but he’s a pure striker. I think we’d have a great fight. Rob mixed it up a little bit and he’s wild. He’s wilder than me. Till met Robert Whittaker in the UFC Fight Island 3 headliner as they took part in a back-and-forth fight that certainly delivered. In the end, “The Reaper” did just about enough to edge the bout and earn the unanimous decision win.

However, Till’s stock certainly wasn’t affected.

It may have even increased in defeat as that certainly seemed to be the case going by Adesanya’s tweet post-fight where he expressed his desire to still fight “The Gorilla” one day.

“I still wanna fight Till one day. His striking is beautiful. Stay up Darren! ”

Adesanya vs. Till is a fight that many in the mixed martial arts world have been waiting to see, not only because of their striking styles, but also because of their personalities and friendship.

If both fighters keep winning, it could still very much be a possibility.

Earlier tonight (Sat. July 25th, 2020) UFC Fight Night: Whittaker Vs. Till took place from Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

The island hosted the main event bout in the Middleweight division between former champion Robert Whittaker and former Welterweight title challenger Darren Till. This fight saw Whittaker strengthen his position as the #1 contender in the division after defeating Till by unanimous decision. In the co-main event, we were treated to a trilogy fight between two MMA veterans Mauricio Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The conclusion to the trilogy spanning over the last 15 years saw Shogun Rua take out his third victory by split decision. Following this Nogueira announced that he would be retiring from the sport. Outside of these fights, there were many moments on the card warranting of bonuses.

The First of many Performance of the Night bonuses given out goes went to Tanner Boser for his TKO victory of Raphael Pessoa midway through round number two.

The Second Performance of the Night came during the preliminary card when Tom Aspinall made his debut finishing Jake Collier quickly into the first round by TKO.

The Third Performance of the Night bonuses went to Jesse Ronson for his first round submission victory over Nicolas Dalby.

The Third Performance of the Night went to Khamzat Chimaev for his dominant victory over Rhys Mckee to open the main card. What was a record-breaking return to the octagon for Chimaev after his debut only ten days prior, saw him completely dominate his opposition immediately securing a takedown and landing ground and pound until the ref called it off. Chimaev took 0 strikes in this impressive bonus winning performance.

The Fifth Performance of the Night bonus went to Pual Craig when he finished Gadzhimurad Antigulov by triangle choke in the third round, adding another triangle choke submission to his record taking the total to three.

The final Performance of the Night bonus went to former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum as he welcomed Alexander Gustafsson to the heavyweight division submitting him with an armbar in the first round.

Till scored a knockdown in the first round while Whittaker rebounded with his own knockdown in the second round. The following two rounds were split between both fighters before Whittaker edged the final round to earn a unanimous 48-47 scorecard to return to the win column.
