UFC 197: Cormier vs. Jones 2

The main card for UFC 197 is shaping up to be one for the ages, as two championship matches are scheduled.

Daniel Cormier will defend his light heavyweight title against former champion Jon Jones, while Demetrious Johnson puts the flyweight belt on the line vs. former U.S. Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo.

But that’s not all, as former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis meets Edson Barboza, Rafael Natal takes on Robert Whittaker and former Ultimate Fighter winner Yair Rodriguez battles Andre Fili.

Of course, all eyes will be on Cormier and Jones, as the two 205-pound giants have already engaged in an epic battle. “Bones” won that won, but was stripped of the belt after legal issues.

Much of the prelim lineup is set, as Danny Roberts-Dominique Steele, Jessica Aguilar-Juliana Lima and Glaico Franca-James Vick compete on FOX Sports 1, while UFC Fight Pass receives Chris Kelades-Sergio Pettis, Clint Hester-Marcos Rogerio de Lima and Efrain Escudero-Kevin Lee.

A few openings remain for the April 23 card from Las Vegas and the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

What happens when you put a whole bunch of testosterone-driven fighters into a small room for a couple hours?

Intensity, that’s what happens.

On Friday, the UFC held a special press conference entitled “Unstoppable” to promote a series of upcoming fights. Once the face-offs happened, things got really interesting between the fighters, as UFC president Dana White was forced to step in on a number of instances.

Despite being stripped of his long-held UFC light heavyweight title last April, Jon “Bones” Jones remains atop the pound-for-pound rankings list.

Behind Jones lies dominant flyweight kingpin Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, a man who has defended his title seven straight times, running a demolition course through the 125-pound weight class.

While these two men certainly deserve their spots, one fighter actually disagrees with the top of the latter, and I’m sure you’re not surprised to hear that it’s none other than reigning featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

McGregor, who meets Nate Diaz in a welterweight showdown at this Saturday’s (March 5, 2016) UFC 196, recently spoke on the rankings, making it very clear where he feels that he stands:

“He’s not,” McGregor responded when asked if Jon Jones is the top pound-for-pound fighter in MMA during a media scrum yesterday. “I’m No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and maybe Jon and “Mighty Mouse” (Demetrious Johnson) is 10. That’s what I feel.”

The brash and outspoken Irishman was originally scheduled to meet lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos this weekend, and will now move up two whole weight classes to face off with Diaz.

Constantly saying that weight doesn’t matter, McGregor took another jab at Jones as well as heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum, saying that no other fighter takes risks like he does:

“Fabricio (Werdum) pulled out and threw cards down the water. Jon (Jones) pulled out and threw cards down the water,” McGregor said.

“Nobody was willing to step up or down. I can’t answer that. You play it safe. You don’t take risks. You won’t go all the way. I get in, I take risks and that’s why I go all the way.”

Do you think McGregor has earned the top spot, or is this just coming from his ever so evident confidence?

Inside the Octagon, Glaico Franca and James Vick are unbeaten, winning all five of their combined fights.

The lightweights will now square off this April at UFC 197, officials announced recently. The event includes UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones and UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo.

Franca (13-3) is 10-1 over his last 11 and on a three-fight win streak. That includes a rear-naked submission win over Fernando Bruno back at UFC 190 in his debut with the promotion. He has finished a dozen of his 13 career wins.

Vick (8-0) debuted with the UFC back in 2013 and scored a guillotine choke on Ramsey Nijem in just 58 seconds to make a splash. He has followed that up with wins over Valmir Lazaro, Nick Hein and Jake Matthews.

In 2012, Vick appeared on the first – and only – live season of The Ultimate Fighter. He won his first three fights, including a knockout of Daron Cruickshank, before falling to eventual winner Michael Chiesa in the semifinals.

The rest of the UFC 197 fight card includes Yair Rodriguez-Andre Fili, Robert Whittaker-Rafael Natal, Marcos Rogerio de Lima-Clint Hester and Jessica Aguilar-Juliana Lima.

With countless maneuvers, the need for perfected timing, and limited room for mistakes, it takes a special kind of fighter to master the standup game. That’s why fans are enamored with quick knockouts, bloody brawls, and anything that involves flying leather.

But even among the best strikers in mixed martial arts (MMA) today, few fighters possess the skill, athleticism, and cage wherewithal to execute perplexing offensive onslaughts that often leave an opponent swinging at the air or staring up at the rafters.

In appreciation of these tricky tacticians, here are the five most confusing strikers in the UFC today.

Demetrious Johnson Plans To Become Full-Time Gamer After Retiring From MMA

UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson is planning for his future. He recently appeared on the Three Amigos podcast and revealed he wants to become a full-time gamer on Twitch.tv after he hangs up his gloves.

“I heard you could watch people play videogames, and that’s how I discovered Twitch,” Johnson said. “This is when I had Tyren, who is now two and a half years old. I would rock him to sleep at night, and he would take a while, so I downloaded the Twitch app to watch. I saw guys playing games I grew up with like Mega Man X and Zelda: Ocarina of Time. So after some time I started streaming some games on my PS4. I’d have like two viewers in there as I played Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn.

“Next thing you know, my wife was like, ‘You should get into it baby, what do you want to do after you’re done fighting? Why don’t you try streaming?’ Then Twitch reached out to me and told me everything I needed to get to be a serious streamer. All of the credit goes to my wife, she’s the one who suggested I do it. I decided if I was going to do it, I had to be 100% in. I didn’t want to do it half-assed and try to stream from my PS4 or Xbox One, so I bought a computer and she was all in, so I was like, ‘Let’s do it.’

“Since I’ve started streaming I spend at least 15 hours a week playing games, maybe more,” he continued. “My brain needs to be stimulated. I look at streaming like a side project, and I take my side projects and my jobs very seriously. Streaming on Twitch isn’t just about playing videogames, it’s about building a community amongst your fans. Right now most of my community is MMA fans, but I’m hoping to break down that barrier and attract the gaming community. I don’t just play first person shooters, I don’t just play the UFC game, I play Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Overwatch, Diablo, StarCraft.

“You have to think about what you’re going to do after your career. I’ve always thought about going back to work at a warehouse or whatever I need to do to make ends meet, but now streaming and video gaming is just kicking off. All I care about is the next game coming out next month. I’m still fighting, I’m in the prime of my career and train my ass off every single day, but I’m starting my second career now. Why not? I’m building my viewership and community now, so when I’m 38 years old and I’m done fighting I can have streaming as my main source of income, hopefully.”

Johnson will next fight Henry Cejudo at UFC 197 on April 23rd. UFC 197 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
