Controversial welterweight Colby Covington has made quite the name for himself both inside and outside of the cage last year, and this year appears to be no different.

Covington has his sights set on welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, and as usual, he won’t hold back while doing so.

The welterweight contender called Woodley out for ‘race-baiting’ and vows to be the champion the people want (via Submission Radio):

“He let’s things get to his emotions. He’s literally a prima donna. That’s the perfect explanation for Tyron Woodley. He tries to racebait. The people that don’t like him and don’t wanna watch him for or think he’s boring, ‘Oh, they’re racist’. That’s his only claim now.

“So, he’s just trapped, he’s in a corner and he’s defeated before anything. The fans have completely gotten in his head and everybody’s under his skin. He doesn’t know how to handle the position he’s in now, but it’s okay, I’m gonna take over his position as welterweight champ and you will see the division be made great again.”

Covington (13-1) most recently defeated Demian Maia in October and has kept his name in the press ever since. Meanwhile, Woodley himself beat Maia at UFC 214 and is due for a title defense after recovering from shoulder surgery for the torn labrum he suffered in the fight.

However, Covington will have to navigate his way around fellow contenders Rafael Dos Anjos, Santiago Ponzinibbio, and Darren Till in order to get a fight with the champion, and he may just have to face off with surging contender Kamaru Usman before he fights any of them.

Who would you like to see Woodley defend his belt against next? Should Covington be the next fighter in line for a shot?

Surging welterweight contender Kamaru Usman says he was offered a fight against fellow prospect Colby Covington, but Covington declined to sign the contract to do so.

Instead, Usman will face Emil Meek, best known for starching Rousimar Palhares in less than a minute prior to signing with the UFC. However, Usman is still disappointed that he wasn’t able to fight Covington.

The former Blackzillian revealed how it all went down on this week’s edition of The MMA Hour:

“We were offered Colby Covington, he said no. Right away he said, ‘No, I don’t want anything to do with that guy.’

“They tried to make fight again two weeks later. Then something transpired, I don’t know what it was, but they tried to make fight again, and Colby said no, absolutely not. Then for the third time they offered it, this was supposed to be my main event, Jan. 14, my main event. Obviously you see why it took so long get a headliner for that card. It was supposed to be me and Colby to headline that card. But he turned it down.”

Covington has become a high profile prospect since defeating Demian Maia and beginning his own brand of trash talk, which has caused him some trouble amongst Brazilian fans and fighters.

Usman says that Covington strategically avoided him as well as other young, top welterweights in an effort advance in the division against what Usman says is older competition:

“Colby only wants to go after the guys he feels that are old and have an athletic advantage and cardio advantage to maybe try to push them into deep waters,” Usman said. “He knows that plays no part with me. You can’t out-wrestle me, you can’t out-strike me, you don’t have more power than me. Basically he sees this, he’s so afraid to where he was running to nobody but all the older guys who are on their way down. That’s all they want.”

What are your thoughts on the always-controversial Colby Covington? Is he avoiding fighters like Usman on his way to a title shot?

UFC welterweight Belal Muhammad has his eyes on a fight with Colby Covington after defeating Tim Means in Sydney over the weekend.

Covington has been in nearly everyone’s crosshairs ever since he went off on Brazilians, which has earned him many enemies, including a confrontation with Fabricio Werdum.

Muhammad took the opportunity following his win over Means to call Covington out:

“I just want to get a top-15 guy, hopefully Colby Covington,” Muhammad, who’s won three straight, told MMAjunkie backstage at Qudos Bank Arena. “He’s sitting on the sidelines begging (UFC champion Tyron) Woodley for a fight, but Woodley’s hurt. So, there’s nobody else for him to fight. All these other guys are already booked.

“Colby Covington needs an opponent. I’m here, December 30th, let’s do it. What’s up?”

Covington now infamously went in on Brazil and Brazilians in the leadup and prior to his fight with Demian Maia, referring to them as animals and other disparaging remarks.

Muhammad on the other hand feels as though he’s the perfect answer to Covington’s heel turn.

“I got a lot of Brazilian fans, a lot of Brazilian friends. My coach is Brazilian,” Muhammad said. “When you disrespect the whole country like that, and it’s not even in a good way. You have like fifth-grade trash-talk. So it’s not even good trash-talk. It’s just being ignorant for no reason. When people talk like that, they deserve to get slapped. And I’m the guy to do the slapping.”

How do you feel about a fight between Covington vs Muhammad? Could Muhammad beat the streaking Covington?

Colby Covington may have notched the biggest win of his MMA career at UFC Sao Paulo last night, but he certainly didn’t endear himself to the Brazilian crowd.

After defeating Demian Maia in the co-headliner, Covington verbally thrashed the audience, calling them filthy animals and Brazil a dump.

Now a day removed from the emotional excesses of fight night, the brash American took to Twitter to give an apology of sorts.

At 29 years old and carrying an impressive 13-1 record, Covington entered the Maia fight with quite a bit of hype. After defeating Maia by unanimous decision, Covington took the opportunity to trash Brazil and its citizens, who came out in full support of the Brazilian’s competing on Saturday’s card.

Covington even shoved the translator away after calling out welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.

Naturally, the notoriously passionate Brazilian audience was less than pleased with Covington’s comment, throwing drinks, yelling, and spitting at the American as he left the cage following the fight.

There hasn’t been any kind of disciplinary action taken against “Chaos;” however, some fight fans have called for it given the inflammatory statements Covington made during his post-fight speech.

Do you think Covington deserves to be punished for his statements? Or is this just typical hype-work in the McGregor era?
