Both men agreed to it on social media, and now it seems both have put pen to paper. According to Ben Askren, his fight with Demian Maia at UFC Singapore is a “done deal.”

“Funky” took to Twitter to announce the news, that he’ll be taking on the Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace at the October 26 show. Askren says the fight will determine who is the “best MMA grappler on planet earth.”

Askren isn’t necessarily exaggerating when he says the fight could determine who the best MMA grappler on the planet is. Both himself and Maia have been extremely dominant on the mat against their opponents in MMA competition. Askren was previously undefeated with a record of 19-0-1. However, he got caught with a flying knee by Jorge Masvidal while shooting in on a takedown in his last fight.

The knockout loss was the fastest in UFC history at five seconds. Now, Askren is ready to bounce back against the 41-year-old Maia, who is currently on a two-fight win streak. Despite his age, Maia is still one of the best 170-pound fighters in the world, as he competed for a UFC welterweight title just two years ago in 2017 against Tyron Woodley.

It looks like Ben Askren and Demian Maia might be next for each other after all.

It was reported late last month that the UFC was looking into booking Askren and Maia for September. However, Maia was recently answering questions on Twitter and was asked who the most challenging grappler he has ever faced in his career was. Maia responded by teasing that challenge may be next for him in Ben Askren.

“That’s tough, so many different and good challenges. Maybe the biggest challenge is yet to come in @Benaskren if we do compete?”

This caught the attention of Askren, who responded by saying he’s down to meet Maia inside the Octagon next at UFC Singapore on October 26.

“I’m in Oct 26 Demian. Are you in also?”

Maia responded to Askren by saying if that date works for everyone involved he’d be happy to fight “Funky” in Singapore.

“If that’s good for the @ufc , and for you as well, I would be happy to compete with you on that date. It is a intriguing challenge and I’m up for it! As a grappler it’s the kind of challenge that motivates me. It’s truly up to them.”

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington certainly enjoyed seeing Ben Askren suffer his first professional defeat.

Askren was the recipient of a viral flying knee knockout just five seconds into his UFC 239 matchup with Jorge Masvidal earlier this month. Given his trash talking style, many were pleased to see him suffer defeat, while others believe “Funky” showed why he was overrated.

Covington — who has gone back-and-forth with Askren in the past — is on both sides as he reflected on the fight in a recent interview with Sirius XM:

“Of course I felt good (seeing him get knocked out by Jorge Masvidal),” Colby Covington said (via BJ Penn). “All the sh*t that he talked and all this stuff that he put people on Twitter that people wrote for him, and all the followers he bought and the interaction he buys every day on social media. It was finally good to see him be shut up.

We found out he is overhyped, he is overrated, he fought a bunch of losers in Asian bingo halls and had a padded record and people want to think he is this Great White Shark but really, he is a jobber and shouldn’t be in the UFC. He is 0-2 and about to go 0-3 and about to get his walking papers.

Covington On Askren’s Next Fight

There have been reports of Askren potentially facing Demian Maia when he’s cleared to fight again. Covington — who defeated Maia via unanimous decision back in 2017 — doesn’t see any way Askren wins that fight, however:

“He can’t beat Demian Maia anywhere,” he added. “Demian Maia will choke him out if he shoots in for a takedown. If it is on the feet he is going to get pieced up because he has pillow hands and is scared to throw punches and get punched. So, I think Demian Maia is going to piece him up.”

While some may feel Ben Askren vs. Demian Maia is a boring fight, UFC analyst Dan Hardy believes it is anything but.

It was recently reported that the UFC was planning on having Askren face Maia once he’s cleared to fight in September. Askren, of course, is coming off a devastating flying knee knockout defeat to Jorge Masvidal earlier this month.

Maia won’t be an easy task either as his jiujitsu prowess would likely negate Askren’s wrestling. And with some recent lackluster affairs between Maia and other wrestlers such as Tyron Woodley, Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman, many feel this will be uneventful fight as well. Not Hardy though:

“Oh, I love it,” Hardy said on MMA on SiriusXM. “I think it’s a fascinating fight because the one thing that Askren wants to do, which is wrestle, is the one thing you don’t really want to do against Demian Maia. And with Demian Maia’s game, the one thing he has to do in order to play his game the best is to wrestle his opponent to the ground so he can strangle them. And that’s where Askren kind of dictates the pace of this fight.

There’s always the possibility of this fight turning out to be Askren stuffing multiple Maia takedown attempts. However, Hardy feels “Funky” is the kind of fighter who will look to engage with the Brazilian on the ground:

“My concern is that Askren’s gonna decide to use his wrestling to keep this fight standing,” he continued. “Then we’re gonna see a display of the worst striking in the welterweight division from two guys that really want to be grappling, but just neither of them want to take the risk. Although, this is the kind of fight where Askren rises to the occasion and takes risks that most people would expect him not to.

“Like if you’re Askren, the smart thing to do is to stuff those takedowns and keep it standing. But knowing Askren, he’s gonna go out there, he’s gonna take Demian Maia and dominate him on the mat. And that might make this fight very interesting because I think Demian Maia’s got an understanding of how to manipulate people on the floor that it just might be on the polar opposite end of grappling to what Ben Askren’s used to, and it might cause him issues. I think it’s a fascinating one. And I’m all for watching high-level grapplers come against each other just as I am with high-level strikers.”

Do you agree with Hardy?
