Derek Brunson did what he set claimed he would do.
Brunson took on the highly-rated Edmen Shahbazyan in their middleweight headliner at UFC Vegas 5 on Saturday night.
Despite having some moments, Shahbazyan was eventually no match for Brunson as he tired later on in the second round and was brutally grounded and pounded by the veteran.
The fight could have been stopped at the end of the second round but referee Herb Dean let it continue only to stop it early on in the third as Brunson earned the TKO win.

The facility hosted a main event bout between ranked Middleweights Derek Brunson and Edmen Shahbazyan. The veteran Brunson proved why he was been at the top of the divison for so long, derailing the rise of UFC prospect Shahbazyan. What was a fairly close opening round took a turn in the second seeing Brunson end the round on top landing ground and pound. Coming out for the final round Shahbazyan looked drained and was quickly taken down and finished. In the co-main event Jennifer Maia spoiled Joanne Calderwood’s plans for a title shot by submitting her via armbar in the first round. Outside of these two fights there were plenty of moments warranting bonuses.
Fight of the Night was the opening fight on the main card between Bobby Green and Lando Vannata. This three-round war some both fighters land large blows in the first however, Green seemed to land more and have the bigger moments approaching the end of the fight finishing with domination in the third round. This landed him a unanimous decision victory.

The first Performance of the night came in the fight following between Vincente Luque and Randy Brown. After taking away the jab of Brown with leg kicks in the first round Luque was able to put it together both in the stand up and on the ground landing accumulative damage on Brown before finding the finishing blow via knee right at the end of the second round.

The final Performance of the Night bonus came in the events co main event between Joanne Calderwood and Jennifer Maia. Going into this bout Calderwood had seemingly put her previously booked title shot on the line against the Brazilian. Maia landed often in the stand up exchanges eventually ending up on the ground where she was able to secure an armbar and earn her submission victory.

Round 1: Brunson starts off with a jab to the body. Brunson sees his head kick blocked while blocking a body shot from Shahbazyan. Shahbazyan lands a right hand before adding on with a body shot. Shahbazyan lands a nice right hand as Brunson attempts a body kick. Brunson lands some strikes and takes Shahbazyan down. Shahbazyan gets up but receives a big elbow as they separate. Shahbazyan starts to unload more as Brunson is on the defensive now. Shahbazyan lands a body shot. Shahbazyan lands a knee to the head but slips as Brunson applies the body lock and has him clinched up against the fence. They separate. Shahbazyan ends the round on top.
Round 2: Brunson lands a leg kick. Shahbazyan lands a huge body kick. Brunson returns his own. Brunson grabs a leg and eventually gets Shahbazyan down but the latter gets up quick. They clinch up before separating. The action is stopped as Shahbazyan receives an eye poke. The fight resumes and Shahbazyan lands a big body kick and starts to go on the offensive. Now it’s Brunson on the offensive as Shahbazyan is up against the fence. Brunson lands a knee to the head but Shahbazyan eats it. Shahbazyan looks a little gassed as he is slowing down considerably. Brunson gets him down and is in side control. Brunson transitions to full mount and lands brutal ground and pound. Shahbazyan survives but receives a number of elbows and punches. It looks like he is out towards the end but the Shahbazyan makes it until the end.
Round 3: Brunson lands a left and takes Shahbazyan down again but Dean calls an end to the fight soon after.
Official result: Derek Brunson defeats Edmen Shahbazyan via TKO (R3, 0:26).
