As we noted earlier on the site, Luke Rockhold pulled out of his scheduled middleweight bout with Ronaldo Souza due to an undisclosed injury. This was supposed to be the main event of UFC Fight Night 101.

The UFC announced on Wednesday morning that the original co-main event bout between Derek Brunson and Robert Whittaker will now be moved to the main event. Andrew Holbrook vs. Jake Matthews will be the new co-main event of UFC Fight Night 101.

Brunson (16-3) is currently on a five fight winning streak and is 5-1 in his last six bouts. He is coming off a win over Uriah Hall at UFC Fight Night 94 by first round KO. Whittaker (16-4) is also on a five fight winning streak and is 5-1 in his last six bouts. He is coming off a win over Rafael Natal at UFC 197 by decision.

“It’s not a problem,” Whittaker told UFC.com. “I always train for the long fights anyway. “I think I’m making a case for my title shot every time I step in that Octagon,” Sydney’s Whittaker said. “That’s my mentality going into these fights. I go in there with the idea to bring excitement, to show that I’m legit about how I do this. “I think this fight is the set-up for title contention,” Whittaker said. “I think either one of us could be fighting for a title and this is almost like the title fight. It’s two dudes who have the ability to get to the top, and this is gonna be very exciting.”

UFC Fight Night 101 takes place on November 27th in Melbourne, Australia at the Rod Laver Arena. The entire card will air on the UFC’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass. Here is the updated card:

Derek Brunson vs. Robert Whittaker

Andrew Holbrook vs. Jake Matthews

Omari Akhmedov vs. Kyle Noke

Yusuke Kasuya vs. Alex Volkanovski

Chris Camozzi vs. Daniel Kelly

Damien Brown vs. Jon Tuck

UFC 204 went down this past weekend from the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, and produced what was probably the UK’s best MMA card in history.

Now we look forward to play matchmaking and examine five fights to make following Michael Bisping’s first title defense.

1. Marc Diakiese vs. Diego Sanchez

Diakiese (10-0) got his UFC career off to a flying start in Manchester, winning by TKO in the second round. The 23 year-old is exciting to watch, reminiscent of a young Jon Jones with explosive power and unorthodox attacks.

Sanchez, a household name in MMA, is expected to face UFC newcomer Marcin Held at the TUF: Latin America 3 Finale in November. Should he get past the Bellator vet, a fight with Diakiese would make a whole lot of sense.

Style wise they match up pretty perfect, both primarily strikers who love to stand-and-bang and the story of the newcomer vs the veteran would make for an interesting fight indeed.

Urijah Hall continued his inconsistent ways on Saturday night, as he suffered a first-round technical knockout defeat to Derek Brunson at the UFC Fight Night 94 event in Hidalgo, Texas.

The former TUF Finalist Hall was originally scheduled to fight Anderson Silva in his next fight, until “The Spider” filled in for Jon Jones against Daniel Cormier at the historic UFC 200 event in July.

Instead, Hall met Derek Brunson, who would stop him with strikes at the 1:41 mark of the opening round.

In a highly-anticipated middleweight matchup in the UFC’s 185-pound division, No. 9-ranked Uriah Hall clashed with No. 10-ranked Derek Brunson in the co-main event of UFC Hidalgo earlier tonight (September 17, 2016).

From the opening horn the two men engaged in a clinch battle after Hall decided to close the distance early, however, Brunson landed a clean strike that sent Hall down to the canvas and Herb Dean decided he’d seen enough.

While the decision for Dean to call the contest was a controversial one, the fact remains that Brunson was declared the winner and will surely be on to bigger and better things in the interesting middleweight division.
