Austin Trout expects tough showdown against UFC alum, Diego Sanchez

Slated to fight the former WBA super welterweight champion this weekend in New Mexico, Sanchez has been described as somewhat of a “weirdo” by Trout, however, the surging boxing challenger admits he may have a stern challenge on his hands.

God bless him (Diego Sanchez), he’s a bit of a weirdo,” Austin Trout told The Underground reporter, John Morgan. “I kinda get his weird a little bit – he’s a warrior. I don’t think it’s going to be as easy as people think it’s going to be – I’ve been training for such. I’m praying it’s as easy as possible. But, you know, with the size difference, he’s got a reach advantage, I think he’s going to try and make it as ugly as possible. And it’s gonna come down to if I can hurt him or not.”

“And if I can’t hurt him, it’s going to be a tough time for me,” Austin Trout continued. “But, if I can hurt him and sting him, it’s gonna be a rough time for him. So, I’m looking forward to that challenge – I’m pretty confident that I can hurt him without hurting myself.”

In the midst of a run of five consecutive victories in professional boxing, Trout most recently defeated Jose Sanchez Charles in Hidalgo, Texas back in December of last year.

Diego Sanchez Austin Trout

UFC legend Diego Sanchez is set to make his BKFC debut against former world champion boxer Austin Trout, and it appears Sanchez still has a massive chip on his shoulder leading into the fight.

Scheduled for February 17th, the match between Sanchez and Trout has many skeptical, with fans worried about ‘The Nightmare’ making his debut against such a younger and more seasoned boxer. Sanchez’s last few UFC fights were brutal beatdowns he found himself on the wrong side of, and that, combined with a poor choice in coach (Joshua Fabia), left many hoping for Sanchez’s retirement.

Videos surfaced of Diego Sanchez tied up, hanging from a rope, as Fabia literally beat him. His coach rocked his body with jabs and hooks as the legend was forced to deal with the blows as he was tied up and defenseless. It was some sick, and twisted footage that many hoped was just a publicity stunt, even though the sad facts pointed to this being a normal occurrence between the two.

That, combined with other brutal beatdowns inside the UFC octagon, as previously stated: led to the UFC and ‘The Nightmare’ parting ways. A boxing exhibition with Dan Hardy was scheduled but was canceled twice. Now, Diego Sanchez is set to make his bare-knuckle boxing debut at 41 years of age against a younger, former world-champion boxer.

Diego Sanchez confident ahead of BKFC Knucklemania 3

As confident as ever, Diego Sanchez participated in an interview with Middle Easy’s Mike Owens ahead of his BKFC debut. He shared many intriguing things regarding his expectations ahead of the fight and also pointed to a Mike Perry or Nate Diaz matchup for what he would want next after Trout.

“I ain’t stupid. I ain’t tryna box with a world champion boxer,” Sanchez began. “I’m going out there to fight his ass. I’m going out there to put the nightmare on him. Get in his face, and make a big exclamation point on my combat striking career… (I want to) put some damn respect on my name… that’s what I’m going to do on February 17th…”

“If I ain’t got that greatness on my name, then what am I doing all this for?” Diego Sanchez continued. “I never did it for the money. I did it to be a legend. I chased the glory, and I’m still chasing the glory. I got a fight in my hometown in front of my family, in front of my crowd, and at my high altitude.”

“Austin trout is in for the rudest awakening of his life. It is what it is,” Sanchez said. “I ain’t trying to sugarcoat no sh*t for everybody and tell ‘em it’s going to be a great fight. I’m going to go out there and slaughter this man. He’s arrogant, he’s cocky, and he doesn’t understand the concepts and the principles. He doesn’t understand the new dynamics of this new sport. He’s arrogant and thinks that he can take off the gloves and do what he does (normally) in a boxing ring when it’s completely, completely different.”

UFC lightweight and welterweight alum, Diego Sanchez has called for both Nick Diaz and Nate Diaz to make a move to bare knuckle fighting under the banner of BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) – with the former recently booking his promotional debut against former professional boxer, Austin Trout.

Sanchez, an alum of the UFC, most recently featured under the banner of the Dana White-led promotion back in September 2020, suffering a unanimous decision loss to Jake Matthews.

Returning to professional mixed martial arts following his organizational release, Sanchez, a former UFC lightweight title challenger and Ultimate Fighter victor, suffered a decision loss to fellow UFC veteran, Kevin Lee at Eagle FC 45 last March.

Recently, Sanchez, a native of New Mexico, was booked to make his promotional bow under the David Feldman-led BKFC banner – taking on former WBC lightweight champion, Trout in a highly-scrutinized pairing which has drawn criticism for it’s matchmaking.

Diego Sanchez weighs up future fights with Nick Diaz and Nate Diaz

Previewing his BKFC matchup with Trout, Sanchez revealed he would like to fight either Nate or Nick Diaz next, urging the Stockton favorites to make the transition to bare knuckle fighting.

After this fight [with Austin Trout], I would love the Nate Diaz or Nick Diaz fight,” Diego Sanchez told The Underground reporter, John Morgan. “That would be the ultimate. The ultimate big money fight for me and the Diaz army.

All the gangster sh*t, the real gangsters take the gloves off, homie,” Diego Sanchez explained. “You know, there ain’t no gloves in the street, Nick and Nate. I know you wanna make your money, so it’s all good, I ain’t gonna get disrespectful or anything. I know they’re just making money, like all of us, as warriors in this sport.”

Without a victory since a homecoming event at UFC Fight Night Rio Rancho back in February 2020, Sanchez managed to land a disqualification win over Michel Pereira after he was on the receiving end of a third round illegal knee which left him unable to continue.
