A planned August 12. heavyweight rematch between former world champion, Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte has been shelved, after “adverse analytical findings” were returned after a random drug test submitted by the latter.

Eddie Hearn confirms the cancellation of Anthony Joshua vs. Dillian Whyte II

Per an official statement from Matchroom Boxing, Anthony Joshua’s scheduled heavyweight rematch with Whyte – which was slated to take place next weekend in London, has now been cancelled following the anti-doping violation.

“5 August 2023 – Today, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Assocaiation [VADA] informed Matchroom, the Association of Boxing Commissions, and the British Boxing Board of Control that Dillian Whyte had returned adverse analytical findings as part of a random anti-doping protocol,” A statement released read.”

“In light of the new, the fight will be cancelled, and a full investigation will be conducted. Further information on the event will follow.”

Initially sharing the ring back in December 2015 at The O2 Arena in the capital, Joshua managed to clinch the British heavyweight title with a seventh round knockout win over Whyte.

In his most recent outing, former world heavyweight champion, Joshua, 33, snapped a run of two consecutive losses to current champion, Oleksandr Usyk – with a unanimous decision win over common-foe, Jermaine Franklin back in April in London.

As for Whyte, the 35-year-old Jamaican-born fighter himself most recently landed a win over common-foe, Franklin, defeating the American heavyweight back in November with a majority decision victory.

The triumph propelled Whyte back to the winner’s enclosure following a WBC heavyweight title challenge loss to incumbent gold holder, Tyson Fury earlier last year, after he had earned a championship try with a stunning rematch knockout of Alexander Povetkin.

With the future of Joshua currently unclear, the Watford native was linked with a subsequent showdown with former WBC heavyweight titleholder, Deontay Wilder later this year following his planned return against Whyte next weekend.

According to multiple reports this Monday afternoon, it appears former world champion, Anthony Joshua is edging closer toward a return to the boxing ring for the second time this year, with former-foe, Dillian Whyte reportedly penning his bout agreement for a planned August 12. rematch in London, England.

Joshua, a former WBA, WBO, IBO, IBF world heavyweight champion, snapped a two-fight losing skid to Oleksandr Usyk earlier this year in his fighting return to the U.K. – defeating Jermaine Franklin with a unanimous decision win in the capital.

Whyte, a former interim WBC heavyweight champion, who boasts a 29-3 professional record, most recently turned in a majority decision win of his own over common-foe, Franklin back in November of last year.

Fighting Anthony Joshua for the first time back in 2015, Whyte suffered a seventh round TKO loss to the Watford native in the pair’s championship clash.

And in the wake of rumors linking him to a potential end-of-year clash with former WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia, Joshua has reportedly been lined up to return firstly in August on home soil – with links to a rematch against Whyte – whose team recently confirmed the presence of a now-signed bout agreement.

25-3 as a professional, Joshua’s sole other professional loss came in the form of a upset knockout defeat to former champion, Andy Ruiz Jr. in his North American debut back in June 2019 in Madison Square Garden.

Over the course of his tenured career, Joshua, 33, holds wins over the likes of Dillian Whyte, Charles Martin, Dominic Breazeale, Wladimir Klitschko, Joseph Parker, Alexander Povetkin, Andy Ruiz Jr., and Kubrat Pulev to name a few.

Dillian Whyte believes the circumstances surrounding his knockout loss to Tyson Fury this past weekend were illegal, and he wants an immediate rematch.

Whyte and Fury headlined a jam-packed Wembley Stadium for an epic heavyweight championship clash. In the sixth round, Fury landed a vicious uppercut that put Whyte down for the night.

In what may have been Fury’s last professional boxing contest, it was quite the spectacle to be a part of. However, speaking to Sky Sports recently, Whyte claims the finishing sequence was illegal.

The challenger states that the uppercut did, indeed, buzz him, but the subsequent push from Fury is what made him hit his head on the canvas, preventing him from getting up again.

Whyte also noted that he knows Fury might be done in the ring after this bout, but he hopes “The Gypsy King” returns as he’d like another shot after what he feels was an illegal finish.

“I was trying to get my senses and he fully two-handed pushed me and I fell over and hit my head,” Whyte said (via Mirror.co.uk) “It was a terrible job from the referee. I should have had time to recover and have time to go back to my corner. Tyson Fury gets away with a lot of things; he said he wants to retire but I hope he doesn’t retire because I want another go.”

Whether or not that is a possibility remains to be seen. Fury certainly has no shortage of options outside the boxing ring. He could always return to WWE for a big matchup against Drew McIntyre, who he has been exchanging words with as of late.

Fury has also expressed interest in doing big money exhibition bouts, as a fight with UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has been talked about quite a bit. It will be interesting to see what the Englishman decides to do next.

What do you make of Whyte’s comments? Do you think the finish was illegal? Give it a look below and sound off in the comments!

Tyson Fury, Dillian Whyte

Tyson Fury retained his WBC heavyweight title after knocking out former interim heavyweight champion Dillian Whyte with a vicious uppercut this past Saturday.

Tyson Fury extended his unbeaten career to 32 wins with a knockout of Dillian Whyte in the sixth round of the contest. ‘The Gypsy King’ made his intentions of retiring after the fight clear leaving space open for only exhibit or fun fights such as a potential match with Francis Ngannou.

Whyte was not happy with the outcome as he claimed the knock-out blow to be illegal. He reasoned it to be a two-handed shove that caused him to hit the canvas rather than the uppercut. Speaking to Sky Sports after the fight, Whyte discussed his KO defeat to Fury insisting on a rematch due to the alleged illegal nature of the win.

“He full-on pushed me and I fell over and hit my head on the canvas, which is illegal,’ Whyte said. ‘This ain’t wrestling, this is boxing. But, you know, you let Fury do what he wants and get away with it. I should have been allowed extra time to recover and then carried on fighting.

‘When he pushed me, he went to the referee, “don’t let the fight carry on”. The referee isn’t doing his job. Okay, I got caught, no doubt about that, good shot. I didn’t go straight down, he full-on, two-handed pushed me. It was a terrible job from the referee, but it is what it is.” (transcribed by Daily Mail)

Will Tyson Fury come back for the rematch with Dillian Whyte?

Tyson Fury appeared to be in full control of the ring leading up to the sixth round at Wembley, but the judges’ scorecards suggest otherwise. One judge awarded rounds two and three to Dillian Whyte while another gave him the first round. Regardless, Fury doubled down on his dominance with an incredible upper-cut that landed square on Whyte who struggled to stand up and coherently defend himself after that making the referee call it off.

Fury has confirmed his plans to retire following the bout although Whyte has urged him to step back in the ring again with him for a rematch.

“He said he’s going to retire… I hope he doesn’t retire because I want another go,” said Whyte.

“I gave him just as many problems as he gave me. It wasn’t a one-way street. I’m not one of those guys who wants to go out on a loss, I’ve still got a lot left in me.”

While a unification bout against the winner of Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk seems to be the most likely option next for Fury, it may never happen due to him staying retired. A match-up with UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou will be on the cards for next year when the MMA fighter becomes a free agent.
