Jose Aldo is not only targeting TJ Dillashaw.

Aldo returned to the win column as well as earned his first victory at bantamweight when he outpointed Marlon Vera over three rounds in the UFC Vegas 17 co-headliner last night.

Following the win, Aldo called for a fight with the former bantamweight champion in Dillashaw who will be eligible to return to action starting next month.

Aldo later clarified his callout was nothing personal either as he believes it’s a fight that simply makes sense for everyone.

However, should the UFC decide on a different opponent for Dillashaw, Aldo has three other names in mind.

“I think the category has new names coming up,” Aldo told AG Fight (via BJ Penn). “There’s TJ Dillashaw, Dominick Cruz, Frankie Edgar, who has a fight with Cory Sandhagen.

“If it isn’t (Dillashaw), it could be Dominick too, it could be anyone. We have to be busy, to draw attention to our category. Or even (Henry) Cejudo himself, if he comes back, we are willing to make this fight.”

The name that stands out in particular is Cruz — even if he is slated to face Casey Kenney at UFC 259 on March 6.

Cruz was the bantamweight champion at WEC as well as the UFC at the same time Aldo was featherweight champion in those organizations.

It led to many fans wanting to see a fight between the pair at some point. While both fighters are seemingly past their prime, it would still be a fascinating matchup even in 2021.

Then again, so would the other options Aldo mentioned other than Edgar who he has already defeated twice, albeit at featherweight.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has been booked to fight rising star Casey Kenney on March 6 according to a report from MMA Junkie who claim two people with knowledge of the booking have verified the match-up and date.

Cruz hasn’t been seen inside the Octagon since his failed bid to regain the UFC bantamweight title. The 35-year-old suffered a TKO defeat inside two rounds against the now-retired former dual-weight champion Henry Cejudo at UFC 249 in May.

Prior to that bout, Cruz spent more than three years out of fighting due to various injury issues after losing his bantamweight title to Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207 in December 2016.

Kenney is something of a surprise opponent choice due to the fact he is not currently ranked at 135lbs. The 29-year-old bounced back from his first and only UFC loss earlier this year to put together a three-fight winning streak. In October Kenney beat Heili Alateng and Nathaniel Wood in a three-week period to announce himself as a potential bantamweight contender.

Current UFC 259 line-up
Aleksandar Rakic vs. Thiago Santos
Dominick Cruz vs. Casey Kenney
Askar Askarov vs. Joseph Benavidez
Randy Costa vs. Trevin Jones
Aalon Cruz vs. Uros Medic
Dominick Cruz vs. Casey Kenney

Do you think Dominick Cruz will get back to winning ways against Casey Kenney at UFC 259?

UFC Bantamweight Champion Petr Yan Responds To Criticism From Former Champion TJ Dillashaw

UFC Bantamweight champion Petr Yan has responded to criticism from former two-time Bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw regarding the state of the division.

During an interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Dillashaw questioned the authenticity of both Yan and Henry Cejudo’s Bantamweight title reigns.

“I want that title, I want it right away because you got a guy Petr Yan that beat someone for a belt that’s 0-2 in the weight division,” Dillashaw said. “Jose Aldo had two losses and he beat him for a title so how are you calling yourself a champion? To me, you’re an interim champion.”

Yan took to Twitter to respond sharing few words with the former champion, simply telling him to wait in line.

Dillashaw was suspended for two years after testing positive for banned substances in his system following his failed bid at claiming the Flyweight title against Henry Cejudo.

Following his ban, the Bantamweight title became vacant seeing Henry Cejudo move up a division to claim his second title after defeating Marlon Moraes at UFC 238. Following his claiming of the title Cejudo defended it once again against former champion Dominick Cruz at UFC 249.

Since then Cejudo has retired and Petr Yan faced off against former Featherweight champion Jose Aldo for the once again vacant Bantamweight title. After emerging victorious Yan has been attached to a bout with number one contender Aljamain Sterling.

This title fight was meant to take place at UFC 257 on December 12, however, Yan was forced to pull from the bout which will now be rescheduled for 2021.

Dillashaw’s suspension ends in the first quarter of 2021 and the former champion expects to make his return fighting for the title against the winner of Yan vs Sterling.

“The weight class is fucked up, it’s ready for me to come back. I’m ready to throw a wrench in it all and even get my belt back, I will be the most dominant,” Dillashaw said.
