One-time UFC lightweight title challenger, Donald Cerrone has laid out pretty distinct plans as he rides off into the sunset following his UFC 276 retirement – which includes continued attending of promotional events, and indulging.

Cerrone, who challenged for undisputed UFC lightweight championship spoils back in 2015, to somewhat of a surprise, called time on his storied professional mixed martial arts career following a UFC 276 loss to two-time opponent, Jim Miller on Saturday.

Enjoying a 17-year professional career, Cerrone, who replaced Bobby Green on just a week’s notice, suffered a second round guillotine loss against Miller – whom he holds a prior high kick knockout win over, before deciding to take off both his gloves and cowboy hat, placing them in the Octagon following the ‘Sin City’ defeat.

“Thank you, Las Vegas,” Donald Cerrone said during his post-fight interview with UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan. “I’m glad my boys got to be here. Here they come now. I don’t love it anymore, Joe. It’s hard for me to get up (for fights), and this is the longest camp I’ve had in a long time. I’m not complaining to anybody, but I don’t love it anymore.”

“I‘m going to be a movie star, baby. It’s time to bow out. I’ve got to know when. This was the perfect event, man – a sold-out crowd in Las Vegas, talking to you. I’ve got my boys. It was one hell of a career, man. Hopefully, one day, I’m in the Hall of Fame. Thank you so much, UFC.”

Donald Cerrone admits he should have likely retired more than 2 years ago

Ending his professional career boasting a 36-17(2) record, Cerrone further admitted that he likely should have called time on his run before his 2020 knockout loss to former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor, as well as laying out a gameplan for retired life away from the Octagon.

“I feel good,” Donald Cerrone told assembled media following UFC 276. “It’s like the biggest sight of relief I’ve ever had in my life. Like, ‘Ohh, we’re done.’ And it’s not off to the next chapter. I’m finally okay in my heart saying it’s time to walk away. The only regret I could say I have is I didn’t do this sooner. I’ll be coming to a lot of fights. I still love the sport, I just don’t love fighting for the sport anymore.”

“Yeah, I’m going to drink beer up there on the front row and have a belly so big I can’t even see my d*ck,” Donald Cerrone explained. “That’s what I’m looking for. Take a look at this body, because it’ll be the last time it’s ever looking this way. After that, I’m turning the corner and never looking back.”

Donald Cerrone called it a career after his latest outing at UFC 276.

This past Saturday, Donald Cerrone took on Jim Miller during the International Fight Week on the UFC 276 card at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, NV. Cerrone has been a mainstay in the sport since before its rise in popular culture, going as far back as the WEC days. The ever-reliant company man for the UFC called an end to a 16-year-long career after his latest loss.

Donald Cerrone reveals when he knew it was time to retire

During the post-fight press conference, Cerrone revealed when he first realized he was getting close to the finish line. ‘Cowboy’ pointed back to his fight with Conor McGregor in January 2020 saying he didn’t enjoy the preparations anymore.

“Before I fought McGregor, I knew it was close,” Cerrone said. “Then I did the McGregor fight and then I took another fight, just going through emotions. I didn’t enjoy it, didn’t love it.

“I knew time was soon and I just had to pick the right time. Coming in, I took a lot of time off and called my agent just to get a fight. I just knew this was going to be the last one.”

‘Cowboy’ regrets not doing it sooner

Cerrone spoke about how fighters tend to continue competing long after it’s time to hang up the gloves. He would look at other athletes in a similar position and understand how different his situation may be compared to others.

“You want it so bad, you still think you can still keep up and still hang with the young crowd and those guys,” he said. “I look at everyone’s age, I’m like, ‘he’s 40, he’s still doing it.’ But man, I’m 39, I think my 39’s a little different than some of these other guys’ 39. I live a wild rough life but it’s time to move on and just go play.”

According to ‘Cowboy’, if there’s one thing he wishes he could’ve done in his illustrious career, it’s to have retired sooner than UFC 276.

“The only regret I could say I have is I didn’t do this sooner.”

UFC fan favorite Donald Cerrone will step in on days’ notice to face the veteran Jim Miller at UFC 276 on July 2.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto was among the first to report the news of the Cerrone/Miller booking.

Cerrone will fill in for Bobby Green, who withdrew from the fight for undisclosed reasons. He has been waiting for a fight as two separate bookings of a matchup with Joe Lauzon have been called off in the last month.

Cerrone was supposed to face Lauzon at UFC 274 last month before suffering from food poisoning on fight day. The UFC then booked the matchup for UFC Austin before Lauzon suffered a knee injury just after weigh-ins.

Cerrone’s last fight came against Alex Morono in May 2021, losing via first-round TKO. He’s gone winless over his last six fights, including defeats to Conor McGregor and Justin Gaethje.

Cerrone will face a resurgent Miller who is tied with him for the most UFC wins in the promotion’s history. He has won back-to-back fights over Nikolas Motta and Erick Gonzalez in the Octagon.

Cerrone made his UFC debut back in 2011 while Miller made his promotional debut just three years earlier in 2008.

UFC 276 will conclude International Fight Week in Las Vegas, NV. The pay-per-view will be headlined by middleweight champion Israel Adesanya vs. Jared Cannonier, and co-headlined by Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway 3.
