Conor McGregor Dustin Poirier

The highly-anticipated trilogy bout between UFC lightweight stars Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier is just weeks away at UFC 264, and the promotion has released a trailer to get combat sports fans excited for the fight.

The trailer first aired during the main card of UFC 263 and drew a wide variety of reactions from around the MMA community, including commentator Joe Rogan on the broadcast. This isn’t surprising as the UFC always looks ahead to the next pay-per-view during the broadcasts; but this one felt different.

McGregor and Poirier will complete their trilogy that spans two different weight classes on July 10th in Las Vegas. The card will mark the UFC’s first full-capacity pay-per-view in the fight capital of the world after months of holding events at the UFC Apex as opposed to T-Mobile Arena.

The trailer does a spectacular job at highlighting the rise and falls of both McGregor and Poirier before, during and after their paths have crossed on the sport’s biggest stage.

“You can have all the money in the world, but you can’t buy heart, I got that,” Poirier said during the trailer. “In the second fight with Conor, I knocked his ass out. We need to do this a third time, we owe each other.”

McGregor hasn’t shied away from challenges after devastating losses, with the prime example being his win in the rematch over Nate Diaz at UFC 202. McGregor sounds primed and ready to rewrite history.

“I lost that night, it stung, and I must get that back,” McGregor said. “Now I have an opportunity to get my revenge.”

Poirier knocked out McGregor at UFC 257 earlier this year in the second round of their fight in Abu Dhabi. After the bout, McGregor seemed keen on getting the trilogy fight with Poirier, who allegedly passed on a UFC lightweight title bout to fight McGregor.

The winner of the trilogy between McGregor and Poirier is almost certainly the next title contender to UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira‘s belt. UFC 264’s main event figures to be one of the most important fights in the promotion’s history, and arguably the most important in the history of the lightweight division.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib Nurmagomedov believes Charles Oliveira is a very worthy UFC lightweight champion but he expects Dustin Poirier to dethrone him in the near future.

‘The Eagle’ retired from MMA in the aftermath of his submission win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October 2020. Nurmagomedov cemented exit from the sport a few months later by relinquishing the 155lb title

The title vacated by Nurmagomedov has since been won by Charles Oliveira who impressively dispatched of Michael Chandler inside two rounds at UFC 262. ‘Do Bronx’ is expected to face the winner of Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor III which takes place on July 10 at UFC 264.

In an interview with Sport 24, Nurmagomedov shared his thoughts on the new champion who he expects to lose to Poirier before his teammate and friend Islam Makhachev makes his way into title contention.

“He seems to have eight wins in a row,” Khabib said. “So many early finishes. As I remember, only against Tony Ferguson did he have a full fight. I think Oliveira is a very worthy champion. Many finishes, many records in the UFC. It would be a shame if Michael Chandler won. Two fights in the UFC and already a champion? That would somehow be wrong. And Charles Oliveira has progressed very much. This is a worthy champion. I’m glad for him.”

“But when Islam Makhachev rises in the rankings, Oliveira will no longer be champion,” Khabib added. “The main thing is that Oliveira should understand my words correctly. I respect him, he is a worthy champion. But when Islam will go up, there will be another champion within the year. In my eyes it will be Dustin Poirier.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

Do you agree with Khabib Nurmagomedov? Will Dustin Poirier dethrone Charles Oliveira to become the new lightweight champion before 2021 is done?

Sylvester Stallone thinks we are in for a great fight when Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor square off for a third time at UFC 264 on July 10.

The movie star who gained fame through his portrayal of the fictional boxer, Rocky Balboa, says Poirier vs. McGregor is a toss-up despite believing ‘The Diamond’ enters UFC 264 with a distinct advantage.

“That’s a tough one man,” Stallone said when TMZ Sports asked him to predict the UFC 264 main event. “That’s is a real tough one. That one, you could really flip the coin on, it’s like, who hits first. You got a really hungry, young guy (Poirier) and then you got a guy who’s made a lot of money but he’s also sorta hungry (McGregor). You have two guys who are psychologically a little hesitant, but Poirier has the big-time advantage.”

The two top lightweight contenders first battled all the way back at UFC 178, a fight in which McGregor earned a TKO win over Poirier just minutes into the fight.

Earlier this year, Poirier got his revenge when the pair rematched at UFC 257. The former interim lightweight champion wrestled early before finding success with low leg kicks and ultimately closed the show in round two with his elite-level boxing.

Poirier was offered a shot at the undisputed lightweight title after beating McGregor in January but decided to pass up on it and instead chase a mega—money trilogy bout against ‘Notorious’. Charles Oliveira won the previously vacant 155lb title by knocking out Michael Chandler inside two rounds at UFC 262. The winner of Poirier vs. McGregor III will likely be who ‘Do Bronx’ will face in his first title defence.

Do you agree with Sylvester Stallone? Does Dustin Poirier have a “big-time advantage” in his trilogy fight with Conor McGregor?
