Former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier will fight surging contender Dan Hooker in the main event of a show set to take place on the 27 June according to reports. Combate first reported the match-up had been booked yesterday and since then MMA Junkie has confirmed the story. According to MMA Junkie, the preference is to hold this fight at the UFC Apex Facility but this depends upon travel restrictions being lifted to allow Hooker to fly from New Zealand to the United States.

The two lightweight standouts were supposed to meet at UFC San Diego on May 16. Unfortunately, the ongoing global pandemic meant that fight was scrapped and it has now been rebooked for later this summer.

Poirier hasn’t fought since falling short in his bid to unify the lightweight division against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242. Despite brief moments of success ‘The Diamond’ was ultimately dominated and stopped inside three rounds by the undefeated Russian.

Hooker will enter this fight on a three-fight win streak. The 30-year-old beat James Vick and Al Iaquinta to earn hometown main event fight against Paul Felder. Hooker emerged victorious at UFC Auckland after five rounds of war in what is still seen as a controversial split decision victory.

Former dual weight UFC champion Conor McGregor has taken to social media to individually attack his lightweight rivals Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje Tony Ferguson, and Dustin Poirier. The Irishman appears to have been hyped up by the interim lightweight title fight which took place at UFC 249 in Jacksonville, Florida this past weekend.

In seven posts to Twitter, he recapped the UFC 249 fight card, tried to arrange a fight with Gaethje, slammed Ferguson’s performance at UFC 249, and had some unsurprising harsh word for Numagomedov and MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz.

Check out everything Conor McGregor had to say below…

“The fans make the sport. Watching the other night I was against going in without them. But it will be my fucking pleasure to display the power I possess with zero background noise for them. Its me and Justin next as Khabib is the biggest bottle fighter in the game. Guarantee it.”

“I love Tony. We represented him amazingly at Paradigm sports and were betrayed for a promise of a baseball contract. But frame and preparation here was just embarrassing. His methods and conversation are humorous/enjoyable but he was never the level perceived. Although tough.

“It is Dustin/Tony next when Tony heals. If he does. Dustin will beat him also if changes are not made. Which they won’t. Dustin, although game, and in the mix, will be fed to the floor again. Couple wins here/there then folded in half. Rinse and repeat – Dustin career.”

“Justin, there is no danger in a man that hugs legs, we all know. Try and dance around what the real threat is here all you want. I am going to fucking butcher you. Your teeth. I’m going to put them on a fucking necklace. Speak on my skills as a father? You are f**king dead.

“Don’t ever say you represent the great nation of the United States of America ever again. No true American would speak so highly of, or allow, a convicted member of a Jihadi terror cell represent them. Never Forget! You are a fucking blind fool, and I am going to finish the job.”

“Khabib you absolute embarrassment. Scurrying, hiding rat as usual. As I have said many times. As has been seen many times. Through the pane of glass it was confirmed what was always known. ‘No comment’ lol. An embarrassment to real fighting.”

“After this division demolition job. It is 170lbs.”

Conor McGregor is the latest to have a problem with the UFC rankings.

McGregor took to social media on Thursday to question how Dustin Poirier (No. 2) was ranked above him (No. 3) in the lightweight rankings.

“How is the pea ahead of me in rankings?” McGregor said in reference to Poirier in a now-deleted tweet. “I sparked him in 90 seconds. Went further against most recent foe [Nurmagomedov], plus took a round. After two year layoff partying and or in jail/court.

“What a weird little game you guys play. I’ll bide my time for now but watch this space. All bums.”

McGregor defeated Poirier via first-round knockout when they met in a featherweight contest back in 2014. Since then, “The Diamond” has won nine of his next 12 outings including becoming the interim lightweight champion following his decision victory over Max Holloway last year.

However, Poirier would lose to Khabib Nurmagomedov in his attempt at becoming undisputed lightweight champion following a third-round submission defeat at UFC 242.

McGregor also suffered a submission defeat to Nurmagomedov in 2018 but believes the fact that he took “The Eagle” to the fourth round and even won a round against him should put him higher than Poirier while considering their head-to-head record as well.

If the Irishman wants to take matters into his hands, he could end up facing Poirier. After all, it’s a fight the latter is open to in more ways than one.

What do you make of Poirier being ranked above McGregor? Right move considering he was interim champion last year?
