Tomorrow (Sat. December 21, 2019) UFC Busan will go down from the Sajik Arena in Busan, South Korea.

In the main event of the night, featherweights Frankie Edgar and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung will go head-to-head. Ahead of the event, we here at LowKickMMA have compiled our UFC Busan staff predictions for Edgar vs. Korean Zombie. Check out our official UFC Busan staff predictions below.

UFC Busan Staff Predictions

Jon Fuentes:

This is such an interesting matchup, but everything really points to Jung’s favor here. It’s in his own backyard, and he’s taking on an Edgar who is jumping into the fight on short notice. I think this one goes all five rounds, but Jung gets the decision win when it’s all said and done. (Prediction: Korean Zombie)

Abhinav Kini:

Unfortunately, we’re not getting a Korean Zombie vs. Brian Ortega fight. But a Frankie Edgar fight will do, especially on short notice. These two were supposed to fight at UFC Denver last year and I believe I was picking Edgar back then. However, after seeing their recent performances, I feel this will only go Zombie’s way and it could even be with a finish given how good he’s looked in recent fights. (Prediction: Korean Zombie)

Jordan Ellis:

Korean Zombie has everything in his favor heading into this fight against Frankie Edgar. The South Korean will fight in front of his home crowd, on the back of a full camp and a big win last time out. The former lightweight champion Edgar will travel the globe on short notice to take a fight 10lbs above the weight he was scheduled to fight at next month. All of this points towards a Chan Sung Jung victory. For me it’s just a matter of how he’ll get it done. And in my opinion he’ll get the finish in quick and empathic fashion. Maybe even as early as the first round. (Prediction: Korean Zombie)

Timmy Moran:

A close matchup headlines the UFC Fight Night 165 where Frankie Edgar looks to spoil the homecoming of Chan Sun Jung. Although credit is due to Edgar for stepping in on such short notice, it won’t be enough as the Korean Zombie will have the Korean faithful cheering him on the night of the fight. Expect a five-round war between the two with the Korean Zombie getting the nod via decision. (Prediction: Korean Zombie)

UFC 245 goes down tomorrow night (Sat. December 14, 2019) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Headlining the card is a massive welterweight title bout between undisputed champion Kamaru Usman and former interim champion Colby Covington. The two high-level wrestlers are expected to put on an extremely interesting stylistic matchup.

In the co-main event, Max Holloway puts his featherweight title up for grabs against the streaking Alexander Volkanovski. And finally, Amanda Nunes will defend her women’s bantamweight strap against Germaine de Randamie.

We here at LowKickMMA have compiled our UFC 245 staff predictions for the three battles. Check them out below.

UFC 245 Staff Predictions

Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington

Jon Fuentes:

Such a phenomenal stylistic matchup. Both men have ridiculous pace and cardio, and a solid wrestling base to match. Before Covington’s fight with Robbie Lawler, I would have given Usman the striking advantage, but now I’m not so sure. This simply boils down to who will be able to impose their will on the other, and I have a funny feeling Usman will find a way to control the action for five rounds, retaining his title with a decision win. (Prediction: Kamaru Usman)

Abhinav Kini:

This is a tough one to call. Both Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington are so similar and we’ve never really seen them face each other’s style. However, I believe Usman has more power and probably a strength advantage to which will play a big role in the clinch and wrestling department. Usman to outpoint Covington. (Prediction: Kamaru Usman)

Jordan Ellis:

You really can’t get a more even fight than this one. Both fighters have almost identical fighting styles. They rely on insane cardio, high output, and a wrestling base. Despite their talents, this fight will all come down to who wants it more. The pace is going to be crazy and one man will swim while the other drowns.

In my opinion, Colby Covington will be the man to survive this one and become the new champion at UFC 245. He’ll likely pick up a unanimous decision victory but don’t be surprised to see him stop the Usman in this welterweight title fight. (Prediction: Colby Covington)

Timmy Moran:

A close matchup between similar styles for the welterweight championship. Perhaps odds would be even closer if Covington was known mores for his strengths inside the Octagon in comparison to his persona outside of it. Usman has the power and strength advantage, but Covington’s output and cardio can overwhelm anyone. That will result in Colby making the division great again, and becoming the new undisputed welterweight champion. (Prediction: Colby Covington)

Max Holloway vs. Alexander Volkanovski

Jon Fuentes:

Alexander Volkanovski is the real deal. The Australian challenger has shown virtually no holes in his game since coming to the UFC. He has hung in there with the best grapplers in the division and shown he has the power to end anyone’s night on a shot’s notice. While Holloway is, arguably, the greatest featherweight of all time, I have a funny feeling we’ll see a new champion leaving Las Vegas tomorrow night. (Prediction: Alexander Volkanovski)

Abhinav Kini:

Alexander Volkanovski is like Frankie Edgar, except with more power, probably more strength, and closer to his prime. I think this will be a close fight, but Holloway’s range, length, and volume will ultimately prove to be decisive and get him the decision. (Prediction: Max Holloway)

Jordan Ellis:

Max Holloway will simply have too much for his challenger at UFC 245. When he’s fighting at featherweight Holloway looks pretty much unstoppable. The Australian will need to hit and hurt the champion early to make a fight of this one and that’s something no one has really done at 145. I see Holloway taking over this fight fairly early on and getting the finish within three rounds to defend his strap and continue to clear out the division. (Prediction: Max Holloway)

Timmy Moran:

Fireworks should fill the Octagon when the co-main event takes place on Saturday. Volkanovski has the power to finish anyone in the division. He also has a reach advantage despite being 5 inches shorter in height. Despite his power and reach advantage, Holloway’s distance control, experience, and gas tank will be too much for the challenger. Expect a five-round battle with Holloway hanging on to his belt when it’s all said and done. (Prediction: Max Holloway)

Amanda Nunes vs. Germaine de Randamie

Jon Fuentes:

Amanda Nunes is the greatest female fighter of all time, and she shows no signs of slowing down. Nunes has finished the best strikers and grapplers the women’s division has ever seen, and come out on top each time. While she may be fighting a more technically sound striker in de Randamie, Nunes’ power has proven too much for even the most skilled standup artists. Nunes should get the win with a quick day at the office. (Prediction: Amanda Nunes)

Abhinav Kini:

This is an interesting matchup because Germaine de Randamie is the best striker Amanda Nunes will face in recent times. That said, I still expect to see Nunes come away with the decision victory. (Prediction: Amanda Nunes)

Jordan Ellis:

Amanda Nunes might be the greatest female fighter of all time, but she’s in for a tough night’s work against Germaine De Randamie. Both fighters have elite level striking and I expect them to go back and forth for five hard rounds. It’ll be a close decision either way, and fans will be demanding a rematch. Ultimately though I expect Nunes to retain her title although it won’t be easy or clear cut. (Prediction: Amanda Nunes)

Timmy Moran:

Expect Germaine to keep the contest on the feet and try to utilize her striking against Nunes. Despite impressive kickboxing credentials, Germaine will have her hands full with Nunes come Saturday. Nunes has the skillset and power to nullify Germaine’s strengths and finish her on the feet, or take her down and submit her as she’s done in the past. Too many ways to win for Nunes. The Champ keeps her belt on Saturday. (Prediction: Amanda Nunes)

Kamaru Usman Colby Covington

Here is an editorial that was written two years ago, just prior to the first fight between Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington at UFC 245. Now that we’ve witnessed not one but two classics between them, it’s clear that MMA fans did have plenty to be thankful for. Here is a trip back to the past before the two ever met in the Octagon, capturing the magnitude of their first classic which was right around the corner.

[ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 28, 2019, 12:00 PM]

Ah, Thanksgiving. It’s a time for families to come together and be thankful for all of life’s blessings that have been bestowed upon them. Yes, we all have something to be thankful for, and today is a day to take the time to reflect on those things. In my case, what I am most thankful for today isn’t any turkey or stuffing, it’s the impending showdown between UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington at UFC 245 that will take place two weeks from Saturday.

That’s right, MMA fam, the only stuffing I’m thankful for is getting to find out which of these elite MMA wrestlers will be treated to some takedown stuffing come December 14 and seeing which of the two will eat the most shots. When it comes to consuming damage, both Usman and Covington have displayed a true lack of appetite, with both men barely getting touched in each of their combined 21 fights, with Usman absorbing a meager 1.60 strikes per minute and Covington only absorbing 2.35.

And in terms of dishing it out, both men may choose to take the path of least resistance whenever it is presented to them, but make no mistake, both fighters know how to serve up beatdowns. In fact, despite the myth that both men are one-dimensional, Colby Covington holds the record for most strikes thrown in a UFC fight, with his total of 541 against Robbie Lawler in his most recent outing. As for Usman, when faced with his toughest challenge to date against then-champion Tyron Woodley, Usman not only set a record for most body shots in a UFC fight, but he also had the largest strike differential in UFC title fight history in that same fight! Geesh, that’s a lot of absence of “hugging” from both men. Where’s the love?

So if the elite wrestling skills of both men cancel each other out, then somebody is going to be on the receiving end of more punches than they have ever been before….or maybe they both will. Maybe fans will be surprised when two men who are used to feasting on their opponents’ wills tear into one another in an unexpected five-round war. Yes, like a kid whose parents continue to hint at an epic Christmas gift that I have no clue about, in these weeks that lead up to the big December day, it’s the not knowing that I am so thankful for. And as we all know, the anticipation season for the big December event officially begins on Thanksgiving day.

Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington have proven to be the most dominant fighters in the welterweight division. Between them, an argument can be made that save Covington’s first-round submission loss to Warrlley Alves four years ago, neither man has lost a round in the UFC. Both grapplers have instead become accustomed to earning the MMA equivalent of technical falls. They have been so dominant that there’s a great chance that this is but only the first chapter in what will turn out to be a long rivalry between two supreme talents. And that’s another thing that I am thankful for about this contest: both men are 100% in their primes.

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for the things we have and also for the things that we may regretfully take for granted in our day-to-day lives. Well, a 10-0 versus 10-1 bout between two competitors in their prime is nothing to take for granted. Sure, it might not generate the buzz of other fights this year, including the BMF bout earlier this month between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, but the fact remains that Kamaru Usman versus Colby Covington, from a competitive standpoint, is the fight of the year on paper. Both men may have their detractors, and their fighting styles aren’t typically the most fan-friendly, but that doesn’t change the reality that if you are a purist and you want to know who the best man is, these are the fights to salivate over because they are rare, as they are truly rare, as our Khabib versus Ferguson woes illustrate.

So I invite you to join me at this table of those who are thankful for talents like Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington, even if many around you are not. And if you are a grace-sayer, go ahead and say a prayer that both men make it to Las Vegas fully intact and far above 30%. Because aside from all the drama between the fighters and all the outside noise of ingrates who do not truly appreciate how epic of a fight this is, the plain truth is: this is a really, really damn good fight that any fan of our sport should be thankful for.

Now go eat.
