As most probably expected, much criticism continues to come at Ronda Rousey’s head coach Edmond Tarverdyan after her 48-second knockout loss to UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 last weekend (Friday, December 30, 2016).

Former UFC contender Kenny Florian recently voiced his thoughts on Tarverdyan’s coaching abilities during a recent episode of his Anik and Florian podcast (courtesy of Bloody Elbow), revealing he heard Rousey never sparred in preparation for her bout with Nunes:

“My understanding is that perhaps Rousey didn’t really spar leading up to this fight,” Florian said. “I get that they’re trying to preserve her from not getting hurt. But you’ve got to have some rounds. You’ve got to ready for the worst case scenario, which is Amanda Nunes striking with you. She wasn’t able to move her head, do anything defensively to avoid the striking skills of Amanda Nunes, and really paid for it.”

“If she didn’t spar at all, as we heard rumblings about after the fight, that’s probably indefensible,” Anik said about the situation. “We so applaud and laud people for scaling back their sparring, but you still have to do it to some extent.”

Florian believes if Rousey wants to return to being the most dominant female mixed martial artist the sport has today, she needs to make an upgrade in her head-coach, as Tarverdyan simply doesn’t have the experience to coach high-level MMA:

“Combat is such an interesting thing. You see how quickly it can evolve. If you do not keep up with it, we see it time and time again, you will be left behind,” Florian said. “For Rousey I think she is a tremendous talent, she did so many amazing things in this sport, but I think she is loyal to a fault.

“I like Edmond. I spoke to him in various occassions, but he doesn’t have the experience for high level mixed martial arts. That’s my opinion. He hasn’t been keeping up with it. I just think she needs a knowledgeable, experienced coach, wherever that is,” he said. “She’s going to need much better coaching, and a much better team around her. That’s for sure.”

ap_ufc_rousey_brazil_74520166-e1444828763907[1]Rousey’s performance against Nunes didn’t show Florian that ‘Rowdy’ had developed since her loss to Holm because her striking still looked subpar:

“Nothing was working for her. She wasn’t moving her head. Her hands started dropping. She was running right into very big shots,” Florian said. “She had 411 days to improve as a striker, and unfortunately for her, just wasn’t able to get it done. There really was no difference in what she did agianst Holly Holm. There was no head movement. There was no variety, There were no angles.

“She still needs to improve, overall. Even if we take out striking, what about developing skills in getting to the clinch safely? Something as basic as that, was not done! For me, as someone who has been in Mixed Martial Arts a long time, that’s just a very basic skill, and she didn’t do that. There were no level changes, no leg attacks as far as dropping to try and get a single or a double leg. That really concerned me.”

Rousey’s camp recently reached out to Florian after his comments, revealing that Rousey actually had four different sparring partners leading up to the bout:

Do you agree with Florian’s assessment of Rousey’s situation?

UFC president Dana White made an interesting point when asked during a media scrum why Ronda Rousey is still working with Edmund Tarverdyan.

“Nobody was complaining when she was on a tear and beating people in record time,” White said.

Tarverdyan has come under fire for his work with Rousey and Travis Browne – who is dating the former UFC female bantamweight champion – in recent months. He also nearly started an in-Octagon brawl with Fabricio Werdum after Werdum defeated Brown earlier this year.

Rousey, though, continues to stick with her coach as she prepares to meet Amanda Nunes Friday night at UFC 207.

“That’s her decision,” White added. “She’s a grown woman. She’s intelligent and she knows what she’s doing.”

Ronda Rousey’s coach reacts to some of ‘Rowdy’s’ Mom’s criticism over his style of teaching, but it’s not actually him…

OK, we’ve all made mistakes in the past, but it seems that swelling Ronda Rousey’s ego by telling her she is a great boxer is a doozy. That is, according to the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion’s mother. She recently blasted Edmond Tarverdyan, Rousey’s long time coach, as an ego-maniacal fraud and an idiot. It’s not the first time Dr. AnnMaria De Mars (Rousey’s Mom) has put the screws to Edmond’s reputation.

Before UFC 193, Rousey’s Mother famously said she hated Tarverdyan, that he was sponging off Rousey’s natural talent and that she hoped he was run over and killed by a car. That’s some pretty intense crioticism, and it looked as though she may have been right as ‘Rowdy’ got outclassed and destroyed by Holly Holm at UFC 193.

05_15180224_44890f_2563877aIn response to the critics after Rousey’s UFC 193 performance, Tarverdyan said he would not bring in a boxing coach to sharpen Rousey’s striking game, and also that he felt Rousey was ‘just caught,’ rather than completely dominated by ‘The Preacher’s Daughter.’

Now, in a rather hilarious twist to the ongoing plot, UFC associated ‘news’ site TMZ published an interview with one ‘Edmund Tarverdyan’ (notice the spelling error) where he reacts to Rousey’s Mom’s latest rant. Saying the following:

“It’s just her opinion. I’m just here to train Ronda and it really doesn’t matter. Ronda knows who I am. I am her trainer and that’s really about it.”

It’s a shame he didn’t go full balls to the wall, but he has made a point of gloating about his new found fame on the parody twitter account for Edmond:

As said, we’ve all made mistakes in the past, but that doesn’t mean we can’t all have a laugh at this latest blooper.

Karo Parisyan Might Be a *Little* Pissed About Ronda Rousey Defecting From His Gym

(Obligatory.)

Maybe it’s just me, because I have a tendency to read too far into things, but based on his recent interview with MMAJunkie Radio, it seems to me that Karo Parisyan is *kind of* bitter over the fact that Ronda Rousey defected from his gym, Hayastan Academy, to train at Glendale Fight Club and in turn become the megastar that she is today.

A little context: You see, Karo Parisyan fancies himself as something like the king of Judo in MMA, and to some degree, his early success in the UFC did help spread awareness of Judo’s practicality in the sport. But Parisyan is also a bit of an egomaniac (see video above), so when Ronda decided to make the leap to GFC after training with Parisyan following her Olympic bronze medal win in 2008, one could expect that Karo might hold it against her. When his cousin, Manny Gamburyan, followed suit, well, you end up hearing stuff like this (emphasis mine):

That’s all good. No animosity toward them. Good for Manny, good for Ronda, because Manny’s always there with her at the trainings and stuff, and Ronda might be on her period and she might take her underwear off and stuff, so Manny helps her out with that stuff, too, like with the tampons and everything else. I’m being a dick to them.

Again, maybe it’s just me, but what in the actual fuck is Parisyan talking about here? He says there’s no animosity between the closely-located camps, then proceeds to insinuate…whatever he is insinuating there? It’s like, does he even know who Ronda Rousey is, bro?

More from this bizarre interview after the jump.

Parisyan was equally critical of GFC head coach Edmund Tarverdyan, suggesting that he is “eating Rousey’s brain” by hyping her standup abilities.

You can’t even compare that gym to our gym, bro. We’re an established MMA gym and a judo gym for over 20 years. [Glendale Fighting Club] is a college gym that became an MMA gym somehow because Roman Mitichyan, one of our guys, one of my best training partners and friends, was taking judo over there, which is part of mixed martial arts, and they bring Edmund, (who) eats up Ronda’s brain and he does what he has to do and brings Ronda in. I don’t want to say eats up her brain, but kind of gets her (thinking), ‘You’ve got to this standup.’ Ronda likes Armenians; she’s been around us all her life. She joined the [GFC], and it’s helping her out, I guess. I don’t know.

Personally, I never trusted that snake in the grass Tarverdyan. Any man who wears glasses as big as his usually has a hidden, evil agenda lying just below the surface, I’ve learned (looking at you, Scorsese!). But you’ve got to love Parisyan’s complete non-committal to sticking by his criticisms here.

“Their gym is garbage, bro, and it’s run by amateurs who are destroying the fighter I helped create. But their helping her, I guess, so it’s whatever.”

To be fair, Parisyan was also quick to sing Rousey’s praises…

Why is Ronda frickin good? Why is Ronda an animal, this little white girl? Because guys would not come train with us. They didn’t want to come train with us, because they thought we were animals and we would hurt them. Ronda was this little white girl that would get on the mat and cry.

I would have to yell at her and say, ‘You better suck your lip back in right now and get on the f–king mat. We’re not dealing with your crap, Ronda.’ And she would suck it in. I would say a small joke and maybe smile, and boom, she was on the mat again, and she was f–king dudes up. That’s why she’s so good, because she was training with animals like us. And she’s naturally strong. Ronda’s legit.

Parisyan last competed at Bellator 116, where he picked up a second round KO over Ron Keslar. Prior to that, he was KO’d by Rick Hawn at Bellator 95.

So what do you think of Parisyan’s words, Nation? Is this just a simple case of sour grapes, or did Parisyan cross the line with the remarks about Rousey’s personal hygiene? And should Rousey be rightfully raked over the coals for abandoning those who helped build her into the fighter she is today? Also, magnets: How do they work?

You can listen to the full interview here, but in the meantime, here’s a slo-mo replay of Parisyan’s recent KO win set to some pretty catchy dance music.
