Edson Barboza heard what Kevin Lee had to say about him on FS1 last week.

Lee earned his fifth straight UFC win last week (Sun. June 25, 2017) when he took home a controversial first round submission win over Michael Chiesa in the main event of UFC Oklahoma City. During his post-fight interview, Lee engaged in a war of words with No. 2-ranked lightweight Tony Ferguson, who was serving as an analyst for the card.

In the midst of their verbal encounter, No. 4-ranked Edson Barboza’s name was brought up, and the Brazilian was listening intently from his Florida home (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I wanted to sleep, but I thought I had to watch the post-fight show because I knew my name would be mentioned,” Barboza said. “Tony talked about me, that Lee had to face guys like me. (Lee) ie behind me in the rankings, and everyone behind me wants to fight me, just like I want to fight someone ahead of me.

“And Tony is clearly stepping aside [laughs]. He knows he’s ahead of me and I want to fight him. I want to fight everyone ahead of me.”

Barboza and Ferguson fought inside the Octagon back in December of 2015, where “El Cucuy” was able to take home the second round submission win by using his patented D’Arce choke. The defeat remains as Barboza’s last loss under the UFC banner, as he has since gone on a three fight win streak.

Lee mentioned that Barboza is “already down the hill” during his spat with Ferguson, and although the Brazilian didn’t hear him say that, he knows Lee will calm himself down once he steps into the cage with the upper echelon of the division:

“Honestly, I didn’t (hear that), but he’s just another kid coming up, new blood, who thinks he has style, but he will learn things the hard way, getting beat up in the cage. He will calm down soon.”

“(Lee) only fought one guy in the top 15,” Barboza said. “Like Ferguson said, he wasn’t tested that much yet. I’m the No. 4 in the ranking, so I think he should… I don’t think anything, actually. I want to fight someone ahead of me. But if that doesn’t happen I’d fight him, no problem.”

“Honestly? I was not (impressed),” he said of Lee’s win over Chiesa. “He’s ranked, I think No. 11 or something like that. He’s one of the 15 best fighters in the UFC, and everyone is good everywhere at this level, so I wasn’t surprised.”

Current lightweight champ Conor McGregor is currently booked to make his professional boxing debut against, arguably, the greatest of all time in Floyd Mayweather next month (Sat. August 26, 2017). With McGregor putting the division on hold so he can attempt to make history in the world of boxing, Barboza said he wouldn’t be surprised if he finds himself in a title fight next:

“That would be great,” Barboza said. “That’s what everybody wants. But I don’t know. I think Ferguson really wants to fight Khabib and Khabib really wants to fight Ferguson, so it’s hard for me to fight any of them. It’s something person. And I’m the next in line.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t know when Ferguson is going to fight and when Khabib is going to fight. I might fight for the interim belt next. Actually, that’s not the interim title my opinion because the other loud mouth is not the real champion. To me, the belt is vacant.

“(McGregor vs. Mayweather) is a lack of respect to the UFC and other athletes. I can’t understand this. (Germaine de Randamie) didn’t want to defend her belt against Cris Cyborg and automatically lost her belt, and this guy is fighting in a different sport, he left (the UFC), and doesn’t lose his belt. It’s hard for me to understand this.”

Edson Barboza Calls Out Jose Aldo With Lightweight Division ‘On Hold’

A top contender at 155 pounds is losing his patience as the lightweight division remains on hold until champion Conor McGregor’s unprecedented boxing match with Floyd Mayweather on August 26.

Riding high off of the momentum of a three-fight win streak, Edson Barboza spoke out about the state of the lightweight division, and his idea for a super fight to keep him busy while the division shakes out.

Check out what Barbosa had to say about a fight with Jose Aldo at featherweight below:

“Everything is stuck in the lightweight division,” the Brazilian striker told ESPN. “Khabib Nurmagomedov, Tony Ferguson, Conor McGregor — nobody is fighting. Everybody is out the next couple months. It’s all the same as it was.”

“I don’t think that’s a crazy idea,” Barboza said. “I fought a couple Muay Thai fights at 145 pounds, a long time ago. I can make that weight.

“What about a superfight against [former featherweight champion] Jose Aldo? Imagine that. Two Brazilian strikers. Why not? That’s a fight that would get me excited. He’s the best 145-pounder ever. If the UFC offered that, I would definitely sit down and think about it.”

Barboza also revealed his thoughts on Conor McGregor, who has essentially held up the the 155 pound weight class after demolishing former champ Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.

“Conor McGregor is once again holding up an entire division (like UFC really cares). The UFC lightweight champion is leaving the 155-pound division beyond to challenge boxer Floyd Mayweather in a superfight on Aug. 26 from Las Vegas. While most understand McGregor’s move to the boxing ring considering his payday will be unworldly, the Irishman’s exit once again puts a strain on deserving title contenders of all shapes and sizes, including Brazilian striker Edson Barboza.

“My last two fights, I fought dangerous guys ranked behind me,” Barboza said. “I won and it didn’t move me anywhere. That’s the problem. I have to get a deal that is good for me.

“Khabib and Ferguson want to fight each other, but is the fight soon? Can it happen before 2020? Go ahead, fight each other, and then I’m next in line. For me, this division doesn’t have a real champion. Conor has fought one time in this division and then never defended his belt.

“If he comes back I do think we will fight. Conor doesn’t like to fight wrestlers. I’m a striker. If I fight with him I’ll say, ‘Bro, don’t even train wrestling. I will not try to take you down. This fight will happen on the feet.’”

Edson Barboza wants another crack at Tony Ferguson.

The No. 5-ranked UFC lightweight is currently on a three-fight win streak over names such as Beneil Dariush, Gilbert Melendez, and former lightweight champ Anthony Pettis. His last loss was against Tony Ferguson who submitted him via D’Arce choke in the second round.

Ferguson has since emerged as a premiere contender at lightweight, as he is now the No. 2-ranked 155-pounder in the world. ‘El Cucuy’ was recently scheduled to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the interim lightweight title last month, but the bout was called off after the Russian was hospitalized in the midst of his weight cut.

During an interview with FOX Sports, Barboza said that he’d be glad to give Ferguson another crack at becoming interim champ, not to mention the match-up makes sense:

“I think that’s the fight,” Barboza said. “I don’t know what the UFC is going to do with Khabib [Nurmagomedov] but I’m ready to fight. Of course, I want to fight somebody in front of me [in the rankings] and I think only Ferguson is available.

“My last three fights I won, I’m sure I’m close to the title shot. That’s the fight that makes sense for me. That’s the fight that makes sense for him.”

Barboza came up short against Ferguson the first time around, but a lot of that had to do with the fact that the Brazilian took the bout on such short notice:

“It was short notice, I only had four weeks to train. He has skills, of course, but I only had four weeks, I was on vacation in Brazil and my manager called me for the fight with Ferguson. I said let’s go,” Barboza said. “You guys saw it was a big war, I think I won the first round. I think the second round, he caught me with a good choke.

“I know if I had a full camp like nine weeks, ten weeks of training, this is not going to happen again.”

The initial meeting between Barboza and Ferguson provided an exciting first round in which Barboza was able showcase his ability. If given three more rounds, the Brazilian he can hardly contain his excitement given the possibility of what kind of show he and Ferguson can put on inside of the Octagon:

“One thing that make me very excited, you guys saw what I did in a round and a half [against Tony Ferguson] — imagine if this was going to be five rounds,” Barboza stated. “That makes me very excited. I hope the UFC gives me the opportunity again for five rounds. That’s going to be a crazy fight. Maybe one of the best fights of the year.”

Barboza wants to fight somebody ranked higher than him in the lightweight standings. With former champ Rafael dos Anjos jumping up to welterweight, Khabib Nurmagomedov recovering from his March hospitalization, and Eddie Alvarez being his training partner – only a fight with Ferguson remains:

“My last two fights, I fought somebody behind me in the rankings. I hope the UFC gives me the opportunity to fight somebody in front of me and the only guy available is Tony,” Barboza said. “I hope the UFC gives me the opportunity to fight him. Rafael [dos Anjos] is out, he’s going to 170. Eddie [Alvarez] is my training partner and my friend. Khabib is out. Only Tony is left.”

If given the added motivation of having an interim title on the line, Barboza promised the best version of himself when he steps into the Octagon in attempt to become a UFC champion:

“If it’s a fight for the interim title, five rounds, I’m going to train like crazy. That’s a big difference. A full camp, I’d be 100-percent, I keep training to get better and better. They give me a full camp for the fight, I’m going to win the fight,” Barboza said.

“It will be the best Edson Barboza to step inside the Octagon.”

Edson Barboza: Conor McGregor Is Not The Real Champ

No. 5-ranked UFC lightweight contender Edson Barboza is looking for a big fight.

After scoring three consecutive victories over the likes of Anthony Pettis, Gilbert Melendez and Beneil Dariush, Barboza appears to be interested in a rematch with No. 2-ranked Tony Ferguson. In fact, Barboza would like to battle “El Cucuy” for an interim 155-pound title, as he doesn’t see Conor McGregor as the real champion:

“I think McGregor is not the real champ,” Barboza told MMAJunkie. “He has the belt, but – I have more than, almost 20 fights in this division. Ferguson has more than 10 fights in this division. Khabib (Nurmagomedov) has almost 10 fights in this division. And I think the next champ is going to be the fight for the interim belt.

“And I really hope the UFC gives me a chance to fight with Tony Ferguson, because he said he wants to fight, and I want to fight, too. I hope the UFC gives me this chance.”

Ferguson was last scheduled to take on No. 1-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov for an interim title at this past March’s UFC 209, but Nurmagomedov was forced to withdraw the day prior after dealing with weight cutting issues.

With McGregor appearing to be out of action for the foreseeable future, Ferguson isn’t willing to wait and he recently suggested July as a possible timeframe for his next fight. That seems to work for Barboza, who feels as if a five round bout between the two would produce fireworks:

“So many guys talk about this fight,” Barboza said. “It’s a rematch for me. I think this fight makes sense for us. It makes sense for me; it makes sense for him. I know he said he doesn’t want to wait, and I’m here – I’m ready. You guys remember the last fight I had with him. It was a really good fight, one of the best of the year. Imagine, guys, five rounds, me and him, with a full camp.

“My last fight against him, I had a four-week camp. I got the fight on short notice. Imagine, guys, five rounds. That’s going to be a good fight – maybe one of the best fights of the year.”

“He said he’s ready for July,” Barboza said. “That’s going to be perfect for me. I’m ready for July, too. Why not?”

Is this a rematch you’d like to see?
