SAN JOSE – Unlike recent Strikeforce conference calls, there was no rancor and not even the hint of a rant when the fighters gathered for a subdued press conference to promote Saturday night’s Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg event at the HP Pavilion.

Welterweight champ Nick Diaz expressed admiration and respect for the challenger, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, as well as for Santos’ wife, women’s 145-pound Strikeforce champ Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, who was also in attendance.

“I think he’s a great fighter,” Diaz said of the male “Cyborg.” “He’s better than the other guys they had in line.”

Nick Diaz has apparently had all he can take when it comes to questions about the bout that never was against Jason “Mayhem” Miller. Nine months after a post-fight melee in Nashville ignited a bitter and ongoing rivalry between the pair, the sides are no closer to getting into a cage and settling it the old-fashioned way.

And during a conference call to hype up his upcoming Jan. 29 title defense against Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, Diaz made his feelings very clear on the matter, saying that given the weight disparity, it’s not a fight he’ll agree to unless the cash is right.

Nick Diaz‘s next fight won’t be against Jason “Mayhem” Miller after all.

Instead, the Strikeforce welterweight champion has agreed to defend his title against Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos on Jan. 29 in San Jose, Calif. Sources close to Strikeforce confirmed the booking with MMA Fighting early Wednesday morning.

The proposed Diaz vs. Miller fight couldn’t be agreed upon by both parties due to Diaz not willing to fight at 185 and Miller not willing to drop down to 170. Neither camp was able to agree on a suitable catchweight.

I’ve never been to an MMA event quite like Wednesday night’s Strikeforce: Live show in Los Angeles. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, I’m not sure, but at least it’s something different.

For one, there was the venue. The Nokia Theatre seems more suited to an intimate Bright Eyes concert than an MMA fight. It’s the kind of place where you feel almost obliged to pronounce the word ‘theatre’ with a bad British accent – not the kind of place where you go to see guys kick each other in the head.

For instance, according to the Nokia Theatre website, Justin Bieber is playing there in about a month. Unlike Strikeforce, which packed in 5,259 fans last night (according to Scott Coker) Bieber’s show is already sold out.
