Last year former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum was flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for a banned substance.

After traces of trenbolone were found in the Brazilian’s system, he was handed a two-year suspension. He will not be eligible to return to Octagon competition until May of 2020. Werdum will be 43 years old by that time, past the age he’d like to continue fighting. Speaking to MMA Fighting recently, Werdum’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, confirmed Werdum’s days in the UFC are likely over:

“Fabricio Werdum’s next fight is probably going to be in Russia. USADA needs to do what they need to do. Fabricio has a family, he has children, he has kids — he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do, because USADA, that’s a broken system. At the end of the day, I know the UFC is with USADA, but I believe USADA is now hurting the UFC.

“They’re not helping. I think Fabricio’s done. You’ll never see him in the UFC again. … They need to do what they need to do, but at the end of the day, Fabricio has to do whatever he needs to do for his family. I know Dana’s tough, but these guys have hearts. They understand this is his only source of income. Now Fabricio’s 41. After his suspension ends and he comes back, he’ll be 43. What is he going to do? If they open a senior league, we’ll wait. But Fabricio Werdum did not cheat, you understand? How stupid are you to cheat at 41 years old? You’d have to be. I don’t think Frank Mir cheated.

“I don’t think Tom Lawlor’s a cheater, I think those guys just got caught for something like Jon Jones did, and Jon Jones keeps getting slaps on the wrist.”

Prior to his suspension, Werdum suffered a knockout loss to Alexander Volkov in England. It marked the end of a two-fight win streak. “Vai Cavalo” defeated Cain Velasquez to capture the heavyweight title back in May of 2016. However, in his first title defense he was knocked out by Stipe Miocic in just under three minutes.

He had been unable to secure another title opportunity since. If we have seen the last of Werdum inside the Octagon, it’s hard not to make the argument that he is the greatest heavyweight of all time. He’s the only man who can say he has victories over the likes of Velasquez, Mark Hunt, Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Fedor Emelianenko.

The former UFC champion admittedly stated he doesn’t like McGregor.

Fabricio Werdum believes he knows how the upcoming UFC lightweight title fight will go at the UFC 229 pay-per-view event next month.

Werdum’s Suspension

Although he’s on the sidelines, it hasn’t stopped him from predicting Conor McGregor taking on UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

Werdum was supposed to compete at UFC Moscow. Werdum was then flagged for a potential USADA anti-doping violation.

As a result, Werdum will be on the sidelines for two years due to him testing positive for anabolic steroid trenbolone and its metabolite epitrenbolone in an out-of-competition screening on April 25. Werdum cannot fight until May 22, 2020.

Fabricio Werdum Believes

TMZ Sports recently caught up with the former UFC heavyweight champion and asked for his prediction for this fight. Thus, Werdum gave his thoughts by stating that he thinks Khabib ‘kill’ him in the second round. The fun part about this story is the fact that Werdum had no issues with stating that he’s not a fan of McGregor.

“Khabib, I think, will kill him for sure. They’ll have to stop the fight for sure I think in the 2nd round. I don’t like too much of Conor McGregor’s style. He talks too much.”

UFC 229 pay-per-view will take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET.

This is being hyped as the biggest fight in the history of the Las Vegas-based promotion due to McGregor’s return.

Lyoto Machida Sounds Off On Fabricio Werdum’s Suspension

Lyoto Machida has had his own dealings with USADA.

The post Lyoto Machida Sounds Off On Fabricio Werdum’s Suspension appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Lyoto Machida reacts to the news that was made this week regarding former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum’s suspension. A heavyweight fight between Werdum and veteran contender Alexey Oleynik was supposed to serve as the main event of UFC Moscow.

However, back in May, it was revealed that Werdum had been flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for a potential anti-doping violation. It was announced revealed this week that Werdum will be on the sidelines for two years due to him testing positive for anabolic steroid trenbolone and its metabolite epitrenbolone in an out-of-competition screening on April 25. He won’t be allowed to fight again until May 22, 2020.

Werdum’s last fight saw him suffer a knockout loss to Alexander Volkov in London, England and before that, he had won back-to-back fights over the likes of Walt Harris and Marcin Tybura.

If you recall, Machida was suspended for 18 months due to an anti-doping violation by USADA. Machida did declare his usage of a product containing the banned substance 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is a steroid. Machida also confirmed the use of the product and said he did not know it contained a prohibited drug.

Once his sample was tested, it came back with an elevated 7?-hydroxy-DHEA to DHEA ratio during a sample collection in April 2016. Machida recently gave his reaction to the news in a recent interview.

“They don’t give you much of a right to defense. How is the guy going to take something and spend this time doing this math? Like, ‘Now I’m going to stop,’” Machida said to MMAJunkie. “This doesn’t exist. If he was doing anything – the test before the one that was positive was also negative. That shows a lot of elements of innocence.”

“I’m not saying that his urine wasn’t (positive) – that’s not it,” Machida said. “That, the test said. Great. But the causes – why did this happen? Who is Werdum? What is the athlete’s past? What has this guy done? So all of this needs to be seen with a much broader vision, other than simply ‘he was caught in that test, let’s suspend him for two years.’ That’s the way I see it.”

“Instead of going, ‘You get two years, that’s it,’ and not look at the athlete’s past and not look at what they did for the sport,” Machida said. “With 25 tests, the guy never failed, he never had one notification in his career. Like me, I’d never had anything. And to be judged just by that moment, by that result, that’s very tough. Look at Fabricio’s image, how does it look? ‘He was caught in the doping.’ OK, his urine was contaminated, but we don’t know what caused it.”

Machida then picked up a victory over Eryk Anders in a middleweight bout in the main event of UFC Belem and beat Vitor Belfort by KO at the UFC 224 event. He has since signed with Bellator MMA.
