Since we talked to Sean Pierson on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour, his UFC 129 opponent changed from Brian Foster to Jake Ellenberger after Foster suffered a brain hemorrhage.

While training for a new opponent on less than three weeks notice isn’t ideal, it definitely isn’t the toughest task the 35-year-old has been forced to confront since winning his UFC debut in December.

Shortly after his win over Matt Riddle at UFC 124, Pierson was set to begin a new job as a Toronto Police officer. However, after his Octagon debut, the Toronto Police Service asked Pierson to choose between continuing his UFC career or beginning a new one as a police officer. He couldn’t do both, they said.

Pierson, who began his MMA career in 1999, chose to stick with the UFC.

“I chose to follow the dream,” Pierson said. “I’ve been dreaming of this for 15 years to try and get into the UFC, so it’s a one-time shot, and I was going to go for it.”

A rematch of the epic September 2007 matchup between Forrest Griffin and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will take place at the UFC’s upcoming event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, MMA Fighting has learned from sources with knowledge of the situation.

Early Friday morning, UFC president Dana White confirmed to MMA Fighting that the two former light-heavyweight champions would clash again.

The original scrap between the two took place at UFC 76, with Griffin winning via third-round submission, pulling off the finish with just 15 seconds left in the bout. Griffin used the momentum of that win to propel him into a championship victory over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in July 2008.
