Well respected referee Herb Dean has drawn the assignment as the third man in the cage for Saturday’s UFC 128 main event pitting champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua against challenger Jon Jones.
New Jersey state athletic control board legal counsel Nick Lembo informed MMA Fighting of the decision on Tuesday.
Dean is one of the most experienced officials in the sport, reportedly presiding over 4,000 matches during his career. His most recent UFC main event was in last month’s UFC 127 draw between BJ Penn and Jon Fitch in Australia.

Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem was among the many people caught completely by surprise by this weekend’s big announcement regarding the sale of his employer to its biggest industry rival.
Overeem told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour that he was completely shocked by news that Zuffa had purchased Strikeforce, but said he has reason to be excited about what this means for the future.
“I was shocked when I read it, but I’m very excited,” Overeem told Helwani. “It’s a very big upset in the MMA world, and the fighting world in general. But yeah, my first thought was, I’m excited. … It was a very big surprise to me and to everybody. The gentlemen did a very good job of keeping the big secret. I didn’t see it coming. I didn’t see it coming at all.”

Just four fights into his pro career, Chris Weidman got the call that nearly every mixed martial arts fighter hopes for: a chance to fight in the UFC. At the time, though, Weidman happened to be hurt, still recovering from a fractured rib. The fight — a chance to perform on the main card against veteran Alessio Sakara — would be in just 18 days.
Needless to say, it wasn’t the best of timing, particularly for a highly touted athlete who many expected to wow onlookers from the beginning. In fact, on a recent edition of The MMA Hour, Weidman told Ariel Helwani that he was “in my underwear and fat” when the call came in.
“It definitely wasn’t the opportunity I imagined,” he said. “I always saw myself getting enough fights that the UFC wanted to have me, I could fight on undercards and work my way up.”
With a golden ticket dangling, though, turning down the fight seemed impossible. Weidman accepted the invitation, prayed for the best regarding his rib, then went out and bloodied Sakara in a unanimous decision win during last week’s UFC on Versus 3 event.
