Introduction To The Ruotolotine Choke

Guest post by Evolve MMA, Asia’s premier championship brand for martial arts with the most number of World Champions on the planet. Named as the #1 ranked martial arts organization in Asia by CNN, Yahoo! Sports, FOX Sports, and more, Evolve MMA is the best gym to learn BJJ in Singapore.

In grappling sports like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and No-Gi submission grapplingchokes stand out as the most efficient way to put opponents out of action. Unlike joint locks, chokes are rarely endured, swiftly rendering opponents unconscious. In the current submission grappling meta, dominated by leg locks and wrestling, the Ruotolo brothers, Kade and Tye, are renowned for their mastery of various arm triangle attacks, offering a unique perspective.

With Tye and Kade reigning as the current ONE Lightweight and Welterweight Submission Grappling World Champions, respectively, let’s delve into their most recent submission victories, employing the same technique to defend their titles at ONE Fight Night 21. This article serves as an introduction to a submission named after the Ruotolo brothers, known as the Ruotolotine.

What Is The Ruotolotine?

The Ruotolotine presents a variation of a modified head and arm choke. Essentially, this submission employs the opponent’s shoulder to block their near carotid artery, while your forearm or wrist obstructs the other, disrupting blood flow. Distinguishable from the arm triangle, the Ruotolotine culminates on the back from the chair sit position, with hands locked akin to the D’Arce, contrasting with the arm triangle’s conventional execution from the side, typically from the mount.

Relatively, the Ruotolotine becomes an option once you have access to the opponent’s back while trapping them from the arm triangle on the side. It involves a head and arm choke executed from behind, utilizing your underhooking arm as the choking arm to grasp your other arm’s bicep. The opposite hand locks in the choke and reaches behind the opponent’s trapped shoulder or pushes their head down.

At its core, this submission is a variant of the head and arm choke family, as it uses the head and arm to limit movement and force the opponent to tap. The attacker uses the opponent’s own arm as a tool to limit the flow of blood, thereby forcing the opponent to either submit or pass out. As mentioned above, the head and arm (or triangle choke) family consists of popular submissions like the arm triangle choke, anaconda choke and D’Arce choke.

Understanding The Chair Sit

To execute the Ruotolotine effectively, it is essential to know the various methods of gaining access to the opponent’s back. Tye Ruotolo’s setup in his recent match involved initially securing the mount position, compelling the opponent to turn to one side. Subsequently, he capitalized on the position by transitioning to the chair sit, seizing the opponent’s back as he applied the choke.

The chair sit is a fundamental move in BJJ where you first get a chest-to-back connection to control the opponent’s torso, then use a sitting motion to transition to the back take. The central premise of the chair sit involves going from one side of your hip to the other while you shift your body weight at an angle. Doing this gives you the ability to secure your hooks, thus locking your opponent in place. Once you secure the back, your next course of action should be to attack the neck using submissions like the RNCshort choke, and Ruotolotine.

Ruotolotine Technique Breakdown

While both Ruotolo brothers concluded their recent matches using the Ruotolotine, let’s analyze Tye’s entry as he applies the choke from the back. Tye’s match with esteemed opponent Izaak Michell was characterized by intense scrambling, both standing and on the ground. For those unaware, Izaak Michell is a grappling phenom hailing from Australia. He won gold in the 2021 IBJJF World Championship as a brown belt, and has been coached by great minds of the art like John Danaher and Craig Jones. From the standup, Izaak executed an elbow drag, utilizing it to initiate a single leg takedown and transition to a rear body lock for back control.

Tye initiated a wrestling switch as he fell to the ground and attempted to insert his arm between Izaak’s legs to defend. Being exceptional with scrambles, Tye managed to sweep Izaak with a hip bump sweep by controlling the elbow and turning his entire body with his head facing sideways to accomplish the sweep. This was one of the highlights of the match, as the sweep was very unexpected and quick. And performing the sweep on a super tough Izaak Michell was simply amazing.

After the sweep, Tye secured the mount position with a classic grapevine and head control while keeping his upper body low. As Izaak was aware of the threat of being trapped in the mount, he immediately sought an escape route by turning his body sideways, pushing Tye’s knee down in an attempt to create an opportunity to force a half guard or extract his legs to insert a butterfly hook. As Izaak sought to rise and braced his elbow on the mat, Tye managed to apply the famous Dagestani handcuff to secure Izaak’s bottom arm.

While maintaining the quarter mount, Tye controlled Izaak’s top hand with a wrist grip, preventing him from executing a hip frame. This allowed Tye to slide his top leg up and take Izaak’s back with the chair sit. As Tye fell backward, hooking his top leg and positioning his bottom leg with a crab hook, he reverted to the chair sit position and swiftly applied the Ruotolotine. To tighten the choke, Tye wrapped his legs across Izaak’s midsection to gain control over his lower body.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Ruotolotine stands as a formidable addition to the arsenal of techniques in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This submission offers practitioners a potent tool for achieving victory on the mats. By using proper timing to secure the opponent’s back, grapplers can execute the Ruotolotine with precision and efficiency. Furthermore, its versatility allows for seamless integration into various grappling scenarios, offering both offensive and defensive applications.

As with any technique in BJJ, mastering the Ruotolotine requires dedication, practice, and a deep understanding of positional awareness and timing. However, for those willing to invest the time and effort, the Ruotolotine promises to be a valuable asset, capable of turning the tide of any match with its efficacy and surprise factor. Try the Ruotolotine today, and let us know if it works for you!

Drake is used to losing a plethora of hefty UFC wagers, but now the millionaire rap artist is placing $500,000 down on Tyson Fury to knock off Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight crown later today (Sat., May 18, 2024) at Ring of Fire live on DAZN PPV from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Today’s heavyweight clash is one of the biggest in recent memory. It has been over 20 years since a boxer claimed the undisputed heavyweight title (Lennox Lewis circa 1999) so history will be on the line at Ring of Fire. Fury is a slight betting favorite, but boxing enthusiasts and fight fans would not be surprised if Usyk stormed into the ring and dispatched the towering Englishman to keep his own undefeated record in tact.

All eyes will be on today’s main event clash between Fury and Usyk, which has also sparked the interest of Drake. The famous artist is currently wrapped up in his own beef, but he took some time aside to place a hefty wager on Fury to defeat Usyk.

According to Drake’s official Stake betslip, he has placed a whopping $565,000 on “Gypsy King” to hand Usyk his first pro loss and leave Saudi Arabia will all four belts in tow. If Drake is correct and Fury is able to knock off Usyk, Drizzy stands to bank a grand payout of $1 million. Not too shabby for an afternoon boxing bet.

UFC 304's Belal Muhammad roasts Sean Strickland following Nina-Marie Daniele's prank gone wrong

It’s safe to say that there is no love lost between Sean Strickland and Belal Muhammad.

Despite fighting in separate weight classes, the two top-five contenders have traded barbs with one another over the last few years. Though things have quieted down between the two, a prank gone wrong by MMA interviewer Nina-Marie Daniele has seemingly reignited their once fiery feud.

While Daniele’s prank was fairly harmless, if not a little childish, it gave Strickland the ammunition he needed to take a dig at the first-time title challenger.

“If you told him that in person he would put his head down and walk away,” Strickland commented during the Instagram Live feed. “Then try to fight you on Twitter lol.”

It was an unusually tame response for Strickland. Still, it served its purpose, eliciting a scathing response from ‘Remember The Name’ in return.

Belal Muhammad

“If sean tells you he’s gonna fight you to the death,” Muhammad wrote on X. “It means he’s gonna jab you and play defense for 25 minutes … if Sean sees your a harmless kid or homeless man on his ring camera he’s gonna walk out side with a gun and record it to make it seem like he’s crazy … if sean goes on a podcast it means he’s probably gonna cry.”

Unfortunately, we’ll likely never see Sean Strickland and Belal Muhammad settle their beef inside the Octagon, but on Friday, July 27, the latter will get his first shot at UFC gold. Emanating from Manchester, England, Muhammad will headline UFC 304 as he challenges the promotion’s reigning welterweight king, Leon Edwards.

Belal Muhammad

The opportunity has been a long time coming for Muhammad who is riding a nine-fight win streak, including victories over three top-10 contenders in his last four outings.

Meanwhile, Sean Strickland is set to square off with one-time title challenger Paulo Costa at UFC 302 on June 1. However, their co-main event has been called into question after ‘Tarzan’ claimed that the Brazilian had not yet signed on the dotted line for their potential title eliminator.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight strikers Edson Barboza and Lerone Murphy will collide TONIGHT (Sat., May 18, 2024) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada for UFC Vegas 92.

At 38 years of age, Barboza has still got it! Most interpreted his late-career Featherweight move as a bad idea, but the Brazilian has carved out a ranked position for himself and currently rides a two-fight winning streak. He’s a gate keeper to the elite, and his next task is turning away “The Miracle.” Murphy is undefeated as a professional and has won five straight bouts inside the Octagon. He hasn’t fought often enough to really establish himself as a contender, but the English talent aims to make his first main event slot a breakthrough performance.

Let’s take a closer look at the betting odds and strategic keys for each athlete:

How Barboza Wins

Barboza has seen it all inside the UFC’s Octagon. A Muay Thai striker through and through, Barboza is one of the nastiest kickers in the sport’s history, capable of stopping his opponent via low, body, or high kick.

This match up reminds me a lot of Barboza’s last bout opposite Sodiq Yusuff. Yusuff was the younger and more explosive athlete, and he came prepared to take Barboza’s head off early on. When the Brazilian hung tough, however, he was able to take the fight deep and make use of his experience advantage with lots of body work and even occasional takedowns.

This match up reads similar. Murphy has seen Barboza’s losses and is going to come out swinging, and he’s a dangerous finisher in his own right. Barboza has to keep his feet moving and weather that storm, perhaps with an intercepting knee or two in the mix to calm Murphy down.

Murphy isn’t an overwhelming wrestler, so if Barboza can survive the early goings, he will end up in the kind of kickboxing match he desires. Then, he can get to work on breaking Murphy down and pulling ahead late.

How Murphy Wins

First and foremost, Murphy is a talented athlete with natural knockout power. In the cage, he’s primarily a striker, capable of timing counters and hurting opponents with kicks and knees alike. He’ll wrestle occasionally too, though getting held down on bottom has been an issue for the unbeaten Manchester native.

Barboza has fought in the UFC a ridiculous 29 times, and he’s lost 11 bouts in that span. There is a common element in almost all of those defeats: pressure. Whether it’s wrestling or striking pressure, Barboza’s inability to keep himself off the fence tends to put him in trouble.

Murphy isn’t typically one to explode out of the gates, but it’s a good tactic here. Time after time, top fighters have either been able to stop Barboza or do severe damage by attacking at the first bell. He’s vulnerable, particularly as the years drag on and Barboza endures more of these wars.

Whether the early finish materializes or not, pressure is the key to victory here.

Barboza vs. Murphy Prediction

It’s hard to feel overly confident in one side or another.

On one hand, Barboza is 38 years old and has a ton of mileage on him. That’s just not a recipe for consistent success below 185 pounds! Conversely, Murphy’s win streak has quite a few iffy moments. He nearly lost to the debuting Gabriel Santos and was thoroughly outwrestled by both Makwan Amirkhani and Zubaira Tukhugov. Simultaneously, he’s managed to show weaknesses and then win anyway, which makes for an unpredictable athlete.

Ultimately, I like Barboza over 25 minutes. He’s still a difficult man to finish, and his Muay Thai is the most standout skill between the two men. He’ll have to endure a bad spot or two, but Barboza should be able to wear down Murphy with consistent kicks to the legs and body, as well as his counter punches.

Even in 2024, few men are 145 pounds are beating Edson Barboza in a kickboxing match.

Prediction: Barboza via decision (+450)

Drake slaps $565,000 bet on Tyson Fury to beat Oleksandr Usyk in title fight tonight

Canadian musician, Drake may currently find himself embroiled with fellow music star, Kendrick Lamar, however, that hasn’t stopped the star splashing cash once more on a high-profile combat sports fight – this time slapping over half a million dollars on Tyson Fury to beat Oleksandr Usyk in the pair’s heavyweight title fight tonight in Saudi Arabia.

Fury, the current WBC heavyweight champion, features in the first undisputed heavyweight title fight for 25 years tonight as he returns to Riyadh, taking on Ukraine star, Usyk in a monstrous heavyweight title tangle.

Sidelined since last year, Morecambe native, Tyson Fury narrowly left the region with his unbeaten professional record in tact, suffering a knockdown en route to a close decision win over former UFC heavyweight titleholder, Francis Ngannou.

Drake backs Tyson Fury to beat Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh

And as for current WBA, IBO, WBO, and IBF heavyweight champion, Usyk, the fan-favorite pugilist improved to 21-0 himself back in August, knocking back the threat of Daniel Dubois with a ninth round knockout win in Poland.

Fury Usyk 5

Sure to garner massive attention tonight in the Middle East, Fury’s title fight showdown with Usyk has landed a huge wager in the process, namely in the form of Drake – who awaits a payout worth over $1,000,000 – with the Canadian placing a $565,000 bet on the British fighter to unify the titles.

Most recently, Drake landed himself a hefty payout after wagering $675,000 on current light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira to retain his championship crown at UFC 300 back in April – with the Brazilian scoring a first round knockout win over challenger, Jamahal Hill.

Drake 6

However, prior to that victory, Drake lost $700,000 betting on former middleweight champion, Sean Strickland to defeat Dricus du Plessis at UFC 297 earlier this year in his native Canada.

Is Drake right to back Tyson Fury to take out Oleksandr Usyk?

After a couple of delays (see why here and here), the long awaited showdown between Heavyweight bombers, Tyson Fury and Oleksander Usyk, will finally go down later TODAY (Sat., May 18, 2024) inside Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia live on DAZN pay-per-view (PPV). In the co-main event, Jai Opetaia will battle Mairis Briedis for vacant IBF world Cruiserweight title.

What’s Hot:

Fury and Usyk were originally set to throw down in December before “Gypsy King” bowed out after a poor outing against Francis Ngannou, which he won. The bout was re-scheduled for February before Fury, once again, bowed out after he suffered a major cut during sparring, prompting the fight to be delayed a few more months. Now, Fury — the current WBC heavyweight champion — will finally be able to put hands on the WBA, IBF, WBO and The Ring heavyweight titleholder. While Fury may have underestimated Ngannou, which lead to a sub-par showing, he won’t make that mistake against the undefeated 21-0 Ukrainian, who is the only may who can say he has two wins over Anthony Joshua. “Gypsy King” has proven to be one of the best big men on the planet thanks to his 34-0-1 record with 24 knockouts, but has he met his match?

Usyk rose to the ranks as one of the best big men in the game after 10 years of taking on some of the best, but his resume doesn’t compare to Fury’s. That said, “The Cat” has a chance to take it to yet another level with a win over one of the most enigmatic fighters in the history of the sport. Fury will have the obvious size and reach advantage. but once Usyk gets up close and personal he has the knockout power to sleep anyone, and Fury has been dropped a few times before. Fury has tasted the power of Deontay Wilder and Francis Ngannou, but Usyk has proven to be an entirely different beast. Both men are rested, fresh and energized to get back into the swing of things, and this could very well turn into one of the best boxing fights we’ve seen in a long time.

How The ‘Prelims’ Look:

Photo by Nick Potts/PA Images via Getty Images

Isaac Lowe vs. Hasibullah Ahmadi will throw down in an eight-round Featherweight bout in the opening fight of the night. Lowe is coming in with a record of 24 wins, two losses and a whopping three draws. He does have eight knockouts to his name, as well. He will have a slight height advantage over Ahmadi, who is 16-0-1 and coming into the fight as the underdog.

26 year-old Daniel Lapin will put his 9-0 record on the line when the Ukranian-born combatant faces Octavio Pudivitr, fighting out of Portugal. Lapin is a southpaw with three knockouts to his name, while Pudvitr has one more finish to brag about with four. Both men started their pro careers in 2019, and are making strides to become future title contenders. One man will take a huge leap here, and get to show their stuff in the opening fight of the biggest boxing event of the year.

Interest Level: 7.5/10

In the co-main event, Jai Opetaia and Mairis Briedis will throw down in a rematch two years in the making. In their first outing back in July 2022, Opetia defeated Briedis via unanimous decision to win the IBF and The Ring Cruiserweight titles, so Briedis has revenge on his mind. On the flip side. Opetaia now has more confidence coming into the rematch. With a 24-0 record with 19 knockouts, Opetaia is out to make it 2-0 against Briedis — who hasn’t competed since the loss — to finally put him in the rearview mirror.

Joe Cordina will put his IBF World Super Featherweight title on the line against Anthony Cacace. Cordina is undefeated at 17-0 with nine knockouts and is coming off a successful title defense over Edward Vasquez. The 32-year old Welsh boxer has a tough task in IBO Super Featherweight champion, Cacace, who will be riding a six-fight win streak into the fight. The Irish champion has an overall record of 21-1 and is looking to become undisputed king for the first time.

In a Heavyweight slugfest, Agit Kabayel and Frank Sanchez collide in a battle of unbeaten big men. Sanchez sits at 24-0 with 17 knockouts, with Kabayel not too far behind at 24-0 with 16 knockouts. This fight has the high probability in ending in a finish, so don’t blink. The winner of this fight will set himself up as a contender for the WBC throne currently in the hands of Tyson Fury, so a lot is on the line including money and plenty of potential glory. It will likely be a while before Fury is ready to defend pending the outcome of his fight, but let’s not put the cart before the horse.

After losing his WBO Light Heavyweight title to current undisputed champion and pound-for-pound king, Canelo Alvarez (see it again here), Sergey Kovalev bounced back with a big win over Tervel Pulev. He still has his eyes on potentially winning gold again, but the first task at hand is a showdown against Robin Sirwan Safar, the undefeated Swedish boxer who boasts a 16-0 record with 12 knockouts. Kovalev has the experience here, but Safar has knockout power to send Kovalev to the back of the line again. The 32-year old has a huge opportunity to raise his stock with a win.

Mark Chamberlain looks to improve on his impressive 73-percent knockout ratio when he battles Joshua Oluwaseun Wahab in a Lightweight affair. Chamberlain (15-0) is coming off a fourth-round TKO win over Gavin Gwynne in Riyadh just two months ago, so ring rust will definitely not be an issue for him. Wahab, meanwhile, is 23-1 with 16 knockouts. The Nigerian-born fighter has a knockout ratio just under 70-percent. and taking Chamberlain out will undoubtedly be the biggest feather in his cap to date.

Two undefeated Cruiserweights will square off as David Nyika (8-0) takes on Michael Seitz (12-0). Nyika won the bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics for New Zealand and only turned pro just three years ago, winning seven of his eight fights via KO/TKO. As for Seitz, the German-born boxer is 12-0 with 10 knockouts to his name.

19-year old Moses Itauma made his pro debut a year and a half ago, and already has amassed an impressive record of 8-0 with six knockouts. He has all the makings of a potential Heavyweight champion, but he has a ways to go before he starts fighting for titles. And his next challenge is far from a walk in the park because Ilija Mezencev has a ton of experience under his belt with a record of 25-3, and has a whopping 21 knockouts to boast of. The 28-year old orthodox striker has a chance to steal Itauma’s shine here.

Enjoy the fights!
