Highly ranked UFC lightweight contender Edson Barboza doesn’t think Conor McGregor is a ‘real champ’.

The brash and outspoken Irishman won the 155-pound title with a brilliant knockout victory over Eddie Alvarez last November at UFC 205 in New York City, but he has yet to defend it, instead electing to accept a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, which will take place on Aug. 26, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Because of this current situation, Barboza feels as if the UFC should strip McGregor of his title:

“Conor stays out for a long time. I don’t think he worries about the UFC, don’t worry about the division. He (doesn’t) respect us, and the UFC don’t get his belt,” Barboza said on a recent edition of The Fight Society podcast. “I really don’t understand why the UFC got the belt from (Germaine de Randamie) and why the UFC (doesn’t) get the belt from Conor? Take the belt (from) Conor. I really don’t understand. I think this belt in the UFC, Conor’s not a real champ.”

In fact, the Brazilian finds it ‘crazy’ that McGregor is still the UFC champion when his focus is currently on boxing:

“This guy is thinking about boxing; he’s thinking about another sport,” Barboza said. “He don’t think about the UFC. He don’t think about the division. That’s my job; that’s my work. I’m in the UFC to get the belt. I’m in the UFC to be the champ. I know I deserve the chance. This guy, because of him, our division is stuck. That’s not good. This guy doesn’t respect nobody. He doesn’t respect the UFC, and he’s still champ. That’s crazy.”

Now to highlight both sides, there have been reports indicating that McGregor plans to return to the Octagon before the end of the year to defend his title, but the division’s top contenders have continued to voice their displeasure with the state of the division.

Do you agree with Barboza?

On August 26, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada, what could end up being the biggest fight in the history of combat sports will take place, and it’s one that many thought could never actually turn into a reality. In the end, however, it did, and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor will indeed take on Floyd Mayweather in a 12-round boxing match.

Many have criticized the bout as nothing more than a ‘money grab’. Many have also given the Irishman a slim chance of beating “Money”, and for good reason, as McGregor has never competed in a professional boxing match, while Mayweather is an undefeated former five-division world champion. In fact, “Money”, is considered to be the very best boxer of his generation, as well as one of the best of all-time.

How could McGregor possibly beat him?

In my opinion, anything can happen in a fight. Of course, Mayweather is the obvious pick, but when two trained athletes strap on a pair of gloves and enter a ring, all expectations must be thrown out the window.

What is a guarantee, however, is that win or lose against Mayweather, McGregor will achieve his primary goal with this fight. The Irishman is certainly a competitor at heart, but his main goal has always been to ‘get in, get rich, get out’. He said it years ago, and he’s said it time and time again since.

Throughout his UFC career thus far, McGregor has become quite wealthy. He’s without question the biggest star in the history of sport, and he’s headlined four of the top five best-selling UFC pay-per-views of all-time, with his rematch with Nate Diaz headlining the best-selling pay-per-view of all-time at UFC 202 last August. Essentially what I’m saying is that if the “Notorious” one never wanted to fight again, he certainly could.

With that in mind, however, McGregor will make more money against Mayweather than he could in a bout against any other fighter. Some have even predicted that McGregor will make around $100 million for the upcoming fight.

In the end, the Irishman is obviously hoping to beat Mayweather, and to no surprise, he’s confident that he will. Regardless of the outcome, however, McGregor has gotten into the fight game, and gotten rich from the fight game, and at 28 years of age, he can get out if he chooses to.

Heading into their Aug. 26 showdown in Las Vegas, Nevada, Floyd Mayweather is certainly the favorite over Conor McGregor, and for good reason. “Money” is widely considered to be the very best boxer of his generation, possessing a perfect 49-0 record, while McGregor, the UFC’s lightweight champion, has never competed in a professional boxing match.

Many have criticized the bout as being nothing more than a money grab, and many have given the “Notorious” one no chance of winning.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, however, had quite an interesting opinion on how the fight will play out:

“I think McGregor will knock him out in the first 35 seconds, like he’d done to Jose Aldo,” Fury told IFL TV. “I think McGregor will do him inside one round. Come on, McGregor!”

Fury has been out of action since scoring an upset victory over Wladimir Klitschko in Nov. 2015. He relinquished his titles soon after the bout, however, due to mental health issues he was dealing with.

As far as the bout between Mayweather and McGregor goes, the Irishman has appeared to be quite confident. He hasn’t competed since last November when he scored a brutal stoppage victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in New York City to become the UFC lightweight champion.

Mayweather, on the other hand, has been out of action since Sept. 2015 when he scored a one-sided decision victory over Andre Berto. He announced his retirement after the bout, but said earlier this year that he was returning to the ring to fight McGregor.

What do you make of Fury’s prediction?

Coach: McGregor “100% Confident” In Victory Over Mayweather

John Kavanagh knows Conor McGregor better than most, and the Irishman’s longtime head coach recently said that McGregor, as well as himself, is ‘100% confident’ that he’ll score a victory over Floyd Mayweather in their upcoming boxing match on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas: “I believe we have a number of advantages going into this […]

John Kavanagh knows Conor McGregor better than most, and the Irishman’s longtime head coach recently said that McGregor, as well as himself, is ‘100% confident’ that he’ll score a victory over Floyd Mayweather in their upcoming boxing match on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas:

“I believe we have a number of advantages going into this fight,” Kavanagh wrote for The 42. “Often, people who are experts in a certain field will tell you that it can actually be more awkward to deal with somebody who’s not from the same field. They’d rather deal with the top contender from their own discipline because he’ll move in a way that you assume he’ll move.

“Mayweather has been in the boxing world for his entire career and everyone he’s faced has moved in a certain way that he’s pre-conditioned to handle. Now he’s going up against a guy who doesn’t follow any set patterns, who can deploy a variety of different styles of fighting and is not one bit intimidated. Conor is — as we all are here — 100% confident in victory. That kind of person is very difficult to deal with.”

Kavanagh may have a point here, but the fact remains that McGregor, the UFC’s lightweight champion, has never competed in a professional boxing match, while Mayweather is highly regarded as the best boxer of his generation. “Money” is also a former five division world champion, as well as the former pound-for-pound king.

At the end of the day, Kavanagh feels as if McGregor will shock the world against Mayweather before returning to the UFC for a bout in December, which is interesting given the fact that many are skeptical as to whether or not the “Notorious” one will ever return to the Octagon:

“Many of the questions I’ve been receiving over the past week have focused on when Conor will fight in the UFC again. My expectation is that it will happen this year, although it’s always difficult to predict what Conor is going to do next.

“If he goes in there and knocks out Mayweather in the first round, there will probably be talk of rematches and stuff like that. But the tentative plan, as I see it, is certainly for a fight in the UFC in December. But in the meantime we’re completely focused on boxing and Floyd Mayweather.”

Are you giving McGregor any chance against Mayweather?

Floyd Mayweather has kept surprisingly quiet following the announcement of his August 26 showdown with UFC superstar Conor McGregor.

While the Irishman has tweeted and posted subtle jabs at Mayweather, the boxing legend finally broke his silence this week after releasing video of him training for the McGregor bout.

Mayweather brought TMZ Sports along for a four-hour training session in Los Angeles and gave fight fans their first glimpse of “Money” as he prepares for Conor McGregor:

Mayweather said he’d beat McGregor and make his usual monstrous payday, noting that even if he did get hurt, he wouldn’t have a bad night:

“I’ll beat McGregor, even if he hurts me” Mayweather said. “I could get a black eye, I could get a bloody nose, I may have a bad day at gym, but at the end of the day, I never have a bad payday or a bad night under the lights.”

Mayweather appeared a bit rusty in the video as he slowly hit the heavy bag and sparred lightly with a partner for the cameras. The all-time boxing great retired after compiling a 49-0 record following his victories over Manny Pacquiao and Andre Berto.

When the 40-year-old great steps into the ring with two-time UFC champion Conor McGregor, he will have had a two-year layoff from the sport. Most still give him an overwhelming chance to beat McGregor, who’s never fought a professional boxing bout, so some may consider this training video to be an intended response to the video of McGregor getting worked by former IBO lightweight champion Chris van Heerden in sparring.

McGregor most recently took the lightweight belt from former champ Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. Prior to that, “The Notorious” split victories with Nate Diaz before knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to capture the featherweight belt back at UFC 194, but he’s stepping into “Money’s” world here, and the only clear edge he has is in age.

With the highly-anticipated bout just two months away, Mayweather still has time to get into fighting shape, but if this training video is any indication, his retirement may have set him back a few steps.

Gennady Golovkin Goes Off On Mayweather-McGregor

After months and months of discussion and speculation, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor will indeed box on August 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada. While the fight could very well turn out to be the biggest in the history of combat sports, it has received mixed opinions due to the fact that Mayweather is the best boxer of his generation, while McGregor, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, has never competed in a professional boxing match.

WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, for example, feels as if Mayweather vs. McGregor is just a ‘funny fight’:

“It’s not a fight. My fight with Canelo is a fight,” said Golovkin on a recent appearance on The Luke Thomas Show on Sirius XM.

“This is a show, Conor with Floyd is just a show. It’s a business show, a funny show, it’s not for us. This is not for boxing, this is for the people and it’s all for business. My fight with Canelo is true respectable boxing, respect for the sport, a true fight,” he added.

Golovkin will take on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a highly anticipated middleweight title fight on September 16, 2017 in Las Vegas just a few weeks after Mayweather and McGregor do battle. Many feel as if the bout between “GGG” and “Canelo” is the best fight that can be made in boxing, although Mayweather vs. McGregor may steal some of its attention.

At the end of the day, however, Golovkin admits that he respects McGregor:

“I respect McGregor like a UFC fighter. He’s not a boxer. He’s a good fighter, but he is no boxer,” he concluded.

Do you feel as if the Mayweather-McGregor pay-per-view (PPV) will have a negative impact on the “Canelo”-“GGG” PPV?
