Lightweight champion Conor McGregor is clearly the biggest star in the UFC. In fact, it could be argued that the brash and outspoken Irish knockout artist is the biggest star in the history of the sport, which is why the UFC has treated him a bit differently than it has the rest of the fighters competing for the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion.

Some fighters haven’t been too pleased with the extra leeway given to McGregor by the UFC, and that number likely grew after it was announced yesterday (June 14, 2017) that McGregor would indeed be taking on former five division world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather in a boxing fight on August 26, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UFC President Dana White, however, isn’t concerned with the backlash from fellow fighters, as he told those angry to ‘shut up’ on a conference call yesterday to promote Mayweather vs. McGregor:

“I got all these guys crying about ‘Oh Conor this and Conor that,’“ White told media members on yesterday’s media conference call. “Shut up. Step up and fight like Conor McGregor fights. Take the big fights when someone falls out on four or five days notice.”

The fight between Mayweather and McGregor will undoubtedly be one of the most lucrative in the history of combat sports, but many aren’t expecting it to be fairly close, as McGregor has never competed in a professional boxing match before. Mayweather, on the other hand, possesses a perfect 49-0 record.

What do you make of White’s comments, and are you giving McGregor any chance of spoiling Mayweather’s return party?

Yesterday (June 14, 2017), it was finally announced that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor would square off in a boxing match on August 26, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The announcement has thrown the combat sports world into a frenzy, and the event is certainly set to be amongst the biggest in the history of combat sports.

Because of that, many fighters have expressed interest in competing on the undercard, which will be put together by Mayweather promotions.

One fighter that falls into this category is UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who took to his official Twitter account to call out IBF, WBA and IBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua:

Miocic, who has a background in boxing, has spoke on fighting Joshua before, and Joshua has expressed interest in competing on the undercard of Mayweather vs. McGregor, but it just doesn’t seem likely that the bout will be made.

Miocic is coming off of a brutal first round knockout victory over Junior Dos Santos in their rematch last month in Texas, and he’s currently awaiting his next opponent.

Joshua, on the other hand, is coming off of a thrilling stoppage victory over the legendary Wladimir Klitschko, and many expect the two to rematch at some point later this year.

What do you make of this situation?

Conor McGregor Will Face Lawsuit If He Kicks Floyd Mayweather

Yesterday (June 15, 2017), it was officially announced that former pound-for-pound king and former five division world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather would be coming out of retirement to take on reigning UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in a boxing match on August 26, 2017 live on pay-per-view from Las Vegas, Nevada. After months and months […]

After months and months of speculation, the two sides finally came to an agreement on the specific details in order to make the fight a reality. One of those details is that the fight will take place strictly under a boxing rule set, and UFC President Dana White even said that McGregor could face a lawsuit if he were to kick “Money”:

“There is no way that will happen. That is absolutely in the contract, number one,” White said on yesterday’s conference call.

“Number two, this is a boxing match under the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. When you talk about a guy like Floyd Mayweather, the lawsuit if that ever happened…”

“You all know how much Conor likes money. Conor would depart with a whole lot of money if that ever happened.”

McGregor has been out of action since a vicious second round knockout over Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 last November in New York City. That win made him the promotion’s 155-pound champion, but he has spent recent months on the sidelines due to the birth of his first child.

Mayweather, on the other hand, hasn’t competed since scoring a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in Sept. 2015. He announced his retirement after the bout, but he will now look to extend his record to a perfect 50-0 when he takes on the “Notorious” one.

A boxing match between former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and reigning UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor could be happening ‘sooner than you think’, per a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

To add more fuel to the fire, Mayweather has reserved an August 26, 2017 date at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s event calendar.

“Mayweather Promotions will promote a professional boxing event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. This event will be televised on Showtime.”

During the tail end of his career, “Money” typically fought at the MGM, making it a likely landing spot for a potential bout between him and the “Notorious” one.

It’s also important to note that the UFC does not have an event booked for that date.

In addition, this new bit of knowledge comes after a recent Instagram post made by McGregor, which the Irishman used to hint that ‘Something BIG is coming’:

McGregor hasn’t competed since last November when he brutally knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 from New York City to become the promotion’s lightweight champion. Since then, he has been out of action due to the birth of his first child.

Mayweather, on the other hand, hasn’t competed since Sept. 2015 when he scored a one-sided decision victory over Andre Berto. He announced his retirement after the bout, but said earlier this year that he was making a return to the ring to fight McGregor.

Do you expect this bout to be made official in the coming days?

Last night, a report surfaced from the LA Times indicating that UFC President Dana White was no longer involved in negotiations for a potential boxing match between former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. The report also said that the bout is being targeted for this fall.

Last month, White made headlines when he revealed that he had come to an agreement with McGregor regarding their side of the deal and that all he had left to do was strike a deal with Mayweather and advisor Al Haymon.

With that in mind, White recently disputed the report from the LA Times, saying that he is ‘running’ the negotiations between Mayweather and McGregor:

“We live in a world right now where you can’t believe anything that you read,” White said to TMZ. “Who else would be running the Mayweather-McGregor deal than me?”

“I’ve had a couple of bad days back-to-back with bad, ‘legitimate news stories’ with the Las Vegas Review-Journal and now the LA Times. Trust me, I’m running the Mayweather-McGregor deal.”

When presented with the idea that WME-IMG, a talent agency who purchased the UFC for a record-setting $4.2 billion last year, could be working on the deal, White responded with the following:

“What does WME know about making big fights?,” White added.

Either way, the fight appears to be closer towards becoming a reality than it has ever been.

Mayweather has been out of action since Sept. 2015 when he scored a one-sided unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto, announcing his retirement after the bout. Earlier this year, however, “Money” said that he was coming out of retirement to fight McGregor.

The “Notorious” one, on the other hand, hasn’t competed since last November when he picked up a dominant knockout victory over Eddie Alvarez to become the promotion’s 155-pound champion.

When it was announced that UFC President Dana White and lightweight champion Conor McGregor had come to terms on a deal that would allow the brash Irishman to face Floyd Mayweather in a boxing fight, many saw it as a major step in making the fight a reality. Others, however, saw it as quite less given the notorious difficulty that typically comes with negotiating with the undefeated Mayweather.

Perhaps that isn’t the case though, as White, who recently spoke on the topic, implied that negotiations between the two sides are going well:

“I’m very bullish on this fight,” White said (Via MMAFighting.com). “I think it happens. These guys are gonna have to come up with something way out of left field for this fight not to happen.”

“We’re ready to go,” White said. “And I think what we’re looking at in the deal is as fair as fair can be. You’ve gotta understand, Floyd and [Al] Haymon and that group are used to dealing with the scummiest human beings on the planet Earth. I think it’s a little refreshing working with us. And I’m not just being arrogant. They’ve said that to us. I can see it getting done.”

Despite this positive sign from the UFC boss, the fight may still be far from a done deal, as White said that he has yet to talk about a potential split between both sides with Team Mayweather. White, however, did say that he feels as if a ’50-50 (split) is pretty fair’:

“We haven’t even got there yet,” White said. “We haven’t even talked percentages yet. … Floyd can think whatever, but the machine that the UFC has and Conor McGregor alone is a machine by himself. I think that 50-50 is pretty fair.”

“I think this thing does, conservatively, between 2-1/2 and 4 million buys,” White said. “Other people think more. … And this thing will kill it, globally. Conor McGregor and the UFC are huge in Brazil, huge in Australia, massive in the UK and other parts of Europe.”

Despite McGregor’s obvious star power, White may very well be in over his head here. To draw a comparison, Mayweather received a 60-40 split for his record setting 2015 bout with fellow boxing star Manny Pacquiao. The fight turned out to be the biggest fight in pay-per-view history, garnering 4.6 million buys. It’d be hard to imagine Mayweather accepting a 50-50 split with McGregor with those numbers in mind.
