A potential boxing match between the legendary Floyd “Money” Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion seems to moving towards the direction of becoming a reality. Both sides have expressed interest in a bout and McGregor has even come to terms on a deal with the UFC that would allow him to take on Mayweather inside the squared circle.

While the potential showdown will likely be one of the most lucrative in the history of combat sports, few are expecting it to be a competitive fight given Mayweather’s undefeated record in professional boxing and McGregor’s lack of experience competing in pure boxing.

UFC color commentator and former welterweight contender Dan Hardy feels as if Mayweather’s defensive prowess, which has often led him to being considered a boring fighter, will frustrate the “Notorious” one:

“In a boxing match, it will be an exhibition of defensive boxing,” Hardy said  (Via MMAJunkie.com). “We’ll see Mayweather dance around for 12 rounds, and we’ll see McGregor get frustrated. In any other kind of combat sports McGregor murders him every day. But in boxing, we have to remember Mayweather is the best defensive boxer of all time.”

“The Outlaw” also feels as if the bout will simply be ‘frustrating’ to watch for fans:

“Instead of thinking offense first, which most fighters would, Mayweather studies and watches, and he sees his opportunities,” Hardy said. “And he waits until later rounds when (his opponents) start to get tired until he picks them off. McGregor is excellent at landing his left hand when he can set it up with footwork and kicking and all these kind of things.

“But if he just keeps throwing that overhand left over and over again, Mayweather will stay out of the way of it, and it will be a frustrating thing for us all to watch.”

Do you share Hardy’s sentiment regarding the potential Mayweather vs. McGregor bout?

Dana White: Conor McGregor ‘Might Never Fight Again’

Since winning the UFC lightweight title with a brutal demolition of Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 last November in New York City, Conor McGregor has made it abundantly clear what he’d like to do next and that would be to take on former pound-for-pound king and undefeated five-time world champion Floyd […]

Since winning the UFC lightweight title with a brutal demolition of Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 last November in New York City, Conor McGregor has made it abundantly clear what he’d like to do next and that would be to take on former pound-for-pound king and undefeated five-time world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather in a boxing match.

Over the last year, talks regarding a potential bout have come from both parties, but many refused to believe it was a legitimate possibility. Recently, however, McGregor revealed that he had officially signed a contract with the UFC in order to make the fight a reality. UFC President Dana White also confirmed that he and the “Notorious” one had come to terms on a deal and that all that was left was to agree to a deal with Mayweather, which is obviously no easy task, but clearly things are moving in the direction of the fight happening.

If the fight does indeed take place, it could end up being the most lucrative in the history of combat sports and if it isn’t, it’ll certainly rank near the top of that list. White recently spoke on this topic, saying that McGregor could make ‘between $60 and $70 million’ for a bout against “Money”. The UFC boss even said that he wouldn’t be shocked if McGregor never fought in the UFC again after earning such a big pay day:

“If this things goes down, Conor could make anywhere between $60 and $70 million; and what I think happens is, how do you come back again and fight for $10 million bucks?” proclaimed UFC president Dana White on a recent appearance on GGN News with Snoop Dogg.

“He’s a smart kid, but he may never fight again,” White told Snoop. “In the fight business, you have to be hungry, man. It’s hard to get up and get punched in the face when you got $75 million in the bank. I think he is hungry for Mayweather and hungry for the money and Conor loves to prove people wrong.”

McGregor, the titleholder of arguably the UFC’s most intriguing division, has no shortage of challengers awaiting him in the UFC. Top contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson are both chomping at the bit to receive a title shot, while a trilogy bout with bitter rival Nate Diaz is also a possibility. None of these options, however, would provide the brash and outspoken Irishman with the type of money he’ll bring in for a bout against Mayweather.

As far as Mayweather goes, the 40-year-old hasn’t competed since scoring a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in Sept. 2015. He announced his retirement after the bout, but has since made it clear that he’d make a return to the ring to take on McGregor. “Money” also recently said the he thinks the fight will happen.

With a potential boxing mega fight between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather seemingly closer than ever towards becoming a reality, the talk of cross over bouts between the two sports continues to soar.

Most recently, UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who happens to be a 2009 Cleveland Golden Gloves boxing champion as well as a National quarterfinalist, gave his thoughts on how he’d match up in a boxing match against reigning IBF, IBO and WBA (Super) heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua:

“If the fight happens, me against Joshua would be a great fight,” Miocic said appearance on “The MMA Hour.” “I think I’d surprise a lot of people, I think it’d be an amazing fight … let’s do it! He’s a great guy. He’s tough, he’s a champion for a reason. I think I’d give him a run for his money.”

Miocic has indeed used his hands to achieve much of his recent success, as he’s scored five consecutive T/KO victories, with four of them being in the first round over the heavyweight division’s elite. Joshua, however, is a former Olympian and is coming off of a thrilling knockout victory over legendary former champion Wladimir Klitschko.

The Telegraph

It’d be safe to assume that many in the combat sports community would hold Joshua as a serious favorite over Miocic in a boxing match, similar to how many are holding Mayweather as a massive favorite over McGregor. Miocic, however, while admitting that Joshua is the ‘best in the world’, feels as if he’d be ‘fine’ against the British knockout artist:

“I do a lot of boxing and I’ve boxed before, working on my boxing I think I’d be fine. “He’s a tough guy, he’s the best in the world. But, I’m pretty tough, too,” added Miocic.

Would you give Miocic any chance in a boxing match against Joshua?

Many in the combat sports community have given UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor little to no chance in a potential boxing match with the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr. Many have also refused to believe that the fight would ever actually take place, but the tides have seemed to pick up in recent weeks.

McGregor recently revealed that he signed a contract with the UFC in order to make the fight a reality and UFC President Dana White announced that he hoped to begin negotiations with Team Mayweather this upcoming week.

As far as his chances against “Money” go, the “Notorious” one is obviously confident, as is his striking coach Owen Roddy. Roddy, although admitting the more time to train the better, actually said that McGregor was ‘ready to go now’:

“We’re training now. The longer it takes Mayweather to sign, the better it is for us,” said Roddy during a recent interview with Newstalk.com. “We get more time to study him the longer he drags it out. We can get people in to help us if needs be. I see the negotiation period as just more time for Conor to immerse himself in boxing.

“The longer he takes to sign, the better it is for us. To be honest, we’re ready to go now.”

McGregor has been out of action since last November, when he brutally stopped Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in New York City to become the promotion’s first simultaneous two-weight world champion. Roddy admits that the Irishman has been preparing for Mayweather ever since he stopped Alvarez last fall:

“We’ve almost been preparing since Conor’s last UFC fight,” said Roddy. “As soon as the talk picked up we started getting ready for it. We all realized that there was too much money to be made on both sides for it not to happen.

“Both Conor and Mayweather made it clear that they wanted the fight, so it was bound to happen.”

While McGregor signing a deal with the UFC is certainly a positive step in making the fight, agreeing to a deal with Mayweather is where things become far more difficult. If the fight does indeed come to fruition, however, it will undoubtedly be amongst the most lucrative in the history of combat sports and Roddy claims that McGregor is ‘happy’ with what he’ll make from the fight:

“Conor is happy with what he’s getting,” said Roddy. “If Conor is happy with what he’s getting, I don’t think he cares what Mayweather is getting. It makes no difference.

“Conor would not have signed if he wasn’t happy with his deal. I doubt he will be affected in any way by what Mayweather is getting for it.”

The undefeated 41-year-old Mayweather hasn’t competed since Sept. 2015 when he scored a one-sided decision victory over Andre Berto. After the bout, he announced his retirement, but revealed earlier this year that he was ready to make a return to the squared circle for a bout with the outspoken McGregor.

Do you expect McGregor and Mayweather to come to terms for a super fight?

First things first.

I am in no way saying that Conor McGregor would beat Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match, nor am I saying that the UFC lightweight champion would or should be a favorite over “Money” if the fight actually comes to fruition.

Many pundits have refused to give McGregor a chance against Mayweather in a boxing match and for good reason, as the brash and outspoken Irishman has never competed in a professional boxing match. Mayweather, on the other hand, is undefeated as a professional, boasting an incredible 49-0 record.

The fight of course is not official yet, but McGregor recently announced that he had signed a contract with the UFC in order to make the fight a reality. UFC President Dana White also confirmed the news, adding in that he expects to meet with Team Mayweather in the near future.

The fight would sure be a spectacle and millions will tune in with the expectation to see McGregor get outclassed. Anything can happen in a fight, however, and it’s interesting to take a look at the contest from McGregor’s perspective.

Let’s analyze five advantages the “Notorious” one could have over Mayweather:

Height

Throughout his destruction of the UFC’s featherweight division, which was capped off with an emphatic 13 second knockout over all-time great Jose Aldo at UFC 194, McGregor used his height to his advantage.

In a boxing match with Mayweather, the Irishman would enjoy this same advantage, as he stands at 5’9” tall as opposed to “Money”, who comes in at 5’8”.

Although this advantage, only one single inch, seems minute, McGregor will need every advantage he can get against the polished and experienced Mayweather. Also, the “Notorious” one is simply the bigger man, which he has been in the majority of his UFC fights. Being the bigger, longer man could potentially help McGregor avoid some of Mayweather’s shots, while aiding him in landing some big shots of his own.

This height advantage also translates into McGregor’s next advantage…

Conor McGregor Applies For Boxing License In Nevada

Late last night (May 17, 2017), it was announced that Conor McGregor had struck a deal with the UFC in order to make his often discussed mega fight with the legendary Floyd Mayweather a reality.

“It is an honour to sign this record breaking deal alongside my partners Zuffa LLC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Paradigm Sports Management,” McGregor told TheMacLife.com.

“The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer’s signature in the coming days.”

UFC President Dana White also confirmed the news:

“The McGregor side is done,” White said on TNT following game one of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. “I’m starting to work on the Mayweather side now.”

“I’m not saying the fight will happen but I got one side done and it’s time to work on the other,” White added.

Today (May 18, 2017), it appears as if another crucial step has been taken in regards to making the fight, as McGregor has applied for a boxing license in the state of Nevada.

Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) executive director Bob Bennet confirmed the news to Boxing News Online:

“Conor McGregor has submitted an application to the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a boxing license,” he said. “We are currently awaiting additional documents from him in support of his application.”

Late last year, McGregor was granted a boxing license in the state of California, which added more fuel to the fire regarding speculation that he may actually take on Mayweather in a boxing match. Mayweather, however, has spent the majority of his lengthy career competing in Las Vegas, making it a likely landing spot for a potential showdown between him and McGregor.

With McGregor and the UFC taking these recent steps, the ball most certainly seems to be in the court of the man dubbed “Money”. The 41-year-old undefeated Mayweather hasn’t competed since Sept. 2015 when he scored a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto. He announced his retirement after the bout, but revealed earlier this year that he was coming out of retirement solely for a bout with the brash and outspoken Irish knockout artist.

Many have refused to give McGregor a chance against Mayweather and for good reason, as the “Notorious” one has never competed in a professional boxing match. To no surprise, however, McGregor has appeared to be nothing but confident heading into what would likely be the most lucrative bout in the history of combat sports.

The Irishman has been out of action since knocking out Eddie Alvarez last November at UFC 205 in New York City to become the promotion’s lightweight champion. Prior to that, he had set promotional pay-per-view records in back-to-back grudge matches with Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in March 2016 and at UFC 202 in August 2016. He and his longtime girlfriend, Dee Devlin, also recently gave birth to their first child, Conor Jr.
