The hype train for August 26’s anticipated Conor MCGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match is understandably in full swing, and with that comes the sure-to-be-endless speculation and predictions from combat sports media members far and wide.

One such prediction came from longtime ESPN boxing analyst and TV show host Max Kellerman, who not surprisingly stated, as many have, that McGregor has no chance whatsoever during a recent edition of ESPN’s ‘First Take’:

“Let me tell you what’s going to happen. Conor McGregor will not land a single punch against Floyd Mayweather. Not one punch.”

While cGregor has obviously never competed in a professional boxing match, hasn’t looked the best in sparring, and is facing one of the best of all-time, it’s a bold prognostication to say he won’t land a single strike on the aging Mayweather. Former UFC heavyweight and “Fighter and The Kid” podcast co-host Brendan Schaub took umbrage to the statement, posting to his Instagram that he would bet Kellerman $100,000 that not only will McGregor land punches, but will also win multiple rounds versus “Money”:

It seems like a bold assessment from both sides, something that is no surprise considering Kellerman is a longtime boxing media member and Schaub is obviously biased towards the UFC and MMA.

The actual outcome is more likely to be in the middle of the two, if we’re to believe the early odds for the historic fight. McGregor will most likely a few shots early but get outlasted by the defensive counter-striking style of Mayweather, especially in the later rounds with both fighters wearing much bigger 10-ounce gloves.

This is still a fight, however, and anything can happen. Are you leaning towards believing Kellerman or Schaub more?

The broadcast team for the biggest fight of the year has been revealed, and most fans will be excited to see who will be the play-by-play announcer for the event.

Veteran MMA broadcaster Mauro Ranallo will be doing the play-by-play duties for the pay-per-view event that will see UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather go at it.

Showtime officials, who are overseeing the PPV broadcast, announced the news on Friday via sportingnews.com. Ranallo is having a great week as he recently signed with Bellator MMA alongside former UFC play-by-play announcer Mike Goldberg as part of the upcoming Bellator NYC broadcast later this month.

Ranallo, who is the lead play-by-play announcer for Showtime Boxing since 2012, has experience calling MMA events across the world over the last few decades as he has worked for such promotion as PRIDE FC, Strikeforce, Rizin FF and “Inside MMA”/AXS TV Fights.

Other members of the Mayweather-McGregor broadcasting team have been revealed as well. Brian Custer will serve as the host while Al Bernstein and Paul Malignaggi will be the color commentators. Rounding out the team are Jim Gray as the ringside reporter and Steve Farhood as the unofficial scorer.

It should be noted that according to the report, the PPV broadcast will feature some guest commentators who provide MMA analysis. The big showdown between McGregor and Mayweather, which will be a 12-round boxing match, takes place on August 26th in Las Vegas, Nevada at the T-Mobile Arena.

Showtime’s announcing team for the Aug. 26 superfight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor has been finalized.

According to Sporting News’ Michael McCarthy, Showtime will use its regular team of boxing announcers, led by play-by-play announcer Mauro Ranallo and color commentators Al Bernstein and Paul Malignaggi. Brian Custer has been tabbed as the studio host, while Jim Gray will be the ringside reporter at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Steve Farhood rounds out Showtime’s team as the broadcast’s unofficial scorer.

Showtime spokesman Chris DeBlasio also told McCarthy the network will enlist special guest commentators to chime in during the broadcast.

A price has yet to be set for the pay-per-view.

However, MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani noted during a conference call Wednesday that UFC president Dana White’s answer to a question about the pay-perview cost suggested the final number could come in somewhere around the $100 HBO and Showtime charged for the 2015 fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Conor McGregor’s Sparring Partner Says MMA Fighter Can’t Beat Floyd Mayweather

A former sparring partner for Conor McGregor doesn’t have high hopes for the UFC star when he steps inside the ring with Floyd Mayweather.

Chris van Heerden, who sparred with McGregor in May 2016, told TMZ Sports he landed shots “at will” on McGregor during their session when Van Heerden was “out of camp, out of shape.” The former IBO welterweight champion added that even if McGregor can land a punch, Mayweather could easily withstand it.

After months of hype, McGregor and Mayweather confirmed on Instagram they’ll step inside the ring Aug. 26 in Las Vegas:

While considered a good striker, many question whether McGregor will be able to hold his own against Mayweather, who’s one of the best boxers in the sport’s history.

On Wednesday, Van Heerden also shared video of a sparring session with McGregor, who looked overmatched:

Assuming the video is from their May 2016 session, McGregor has had a lot of time to continue training and would presumably be more comfortable boxing at this point.

Still, combat sports fans have seen stuff like this before, whether it was CM Punk’s less-than-encouraging training video or the clip of Ronda Rousey’s questionable boxing technique.

McGregor can train like a madman for the next two months, but he’s facing somebody who will have decades more experience in boxing. Bridging that gap is might be impossible, especially without Mayweather showing significant decline in his most victories over Manny Pacquiao and Andre Berto in 2015.

Now that the Mayweather vs. McGregor deal is done, there are hundreds of questions that won’t be answered until August 26.

One question that stands out regards what many fight fans see as an inevitability: what will happen to McGregor and the UFC if and their top draw loses?

Well, UFC President Dana White is confident that even a loss to one of the greatest boxers in history won’t tarnish MMA and the man at the top of its mountain.

“At the end of the day, these two guys wanted this fight, the fans wanted this fight, and Conor is a mixed martial artist going into a boxing match with arguably the greatest boxer of all time,” White said during a conference call following the fight announcement. “I don’t think it damages the brand or Conor McGregor at all, I think it actually elevates Conor McGregor. The fact that this kid who has so much to lose is willing to step in and is absolutely confident that he will win this fight, I think is one of the many reasons that people love Conor McGregor and win, lose or draw it will be one of the reasons that people continue to love Conor McGregor.”

Ever the promoter, White was realistic about the disparity in boxing skills and experience between Mayweather and McGregor, but stopped short of not giving the UFC’s first ever two-division champion a chance at pulling off the improbable upset.

“Listen, is he at the level of a Floyd Mayweather as far as boxing standards go?” White said. “No, but the kid, first of all, is a southpaw and people can argue one way or the other but Floyd, traditionally, if you want to say there’s ever been a kink in the armor with that kid, it’s with southpaws. And Conor McGregor is an absolute knockout artist. When he hits you, you go. So it’s part of the fun of this fight, is Conor McGregor, in a 12-round fight, gonna be able to touch Floyd Mayweather?”

While MMA and boxing pundits alike seem confident that Mayweather will win, the president of the UFC doesn’t necessarily see a loss for McGregor as a loss at all.

Of course, Dana White wouldn’t have helped to put the bout together if he felt the most likely outcome would destroy his sport and it’s biggest star.
