UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor might have a career after fighting, and that is coaching. On Thursday, the two-division UFC champion posted a video of him giving boxing advice that he originally sent as a reply to one of his proteges on his Instagram account. Not only did he give out some advice, but he also used the opportunity to throw some shade at potential opponent Floyd Mayweather. Mcgregor and Mayweather are in negotiations for the proposed super fight.

McGregor then steered the conversation back to his role as a mentor in the video and noted that he wants to teach his son to be a free fighting champion, just like his dad. Dee Devlin, McGregor’s girlfriend, is due to have the couple’s baby boy next month.

“Here is a reply video I sent one of my protégés who was seeking advice on some boxing only padwork footage they sent me. I believe you will like it. The focus has been solely boxing lately but make no mistakes, the kicking, and grappling aspects, and everything else got to do with unlimited free fighting, is still very much present in my thoughts. Floyd may crap his jocks after all and if so I will go back to true fighting or just pick another boxer like Manny or something. But whatever that’s another conversation. I like to build fighters and watch their progression. I have built many to this date, and all unintentionally. One is fighting in the UFC main event this weekend. When my son is born, I will build him up into a multiple free fighting world champion also. Just like his old man. I look forward to it.”

Conor McGregor Proclaims He’ll Make Much More Than $75 Million For Mayweather Fight

After months and months of speculation, yesterday UFC President Dana White gave us what may have been the most concrete evidence that the long-rumored boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather was going to happen.

White revealed McGregor would make $75 million and Mayweather would still out-earn”The Notorious” at ‘$100-plus million,’ and not surprisingly, the Irish superstar had a response to those estimations. McGregor took to his official Instagram account to reveal he would actually be making over $100 million himself thanks to his side ventures:

And you’d probably find it hard to argue with “The Notorious on this one, as his endorsements and other money-making aspects would most likely push him well past the $100 million mark for a fight that could certainly be billed as the biggest combat sporting events of all-time (at least the most current one).

White claims negotiations are only ‘a few days’ away from being finalized, but he may not like what he’s asking for, because the landscape is hard to envision McGregor returning to the UFC for his normal paycheck after fighting Mayweather for the most lucrative payday a UFC fighter has ever earned.

That’s not going to excite the MMA fans looking for him to make his first-ever title defense.

Dana White’s Good-Guy Narrative Surrounding Conor-Floyd Is a Bit Much

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are probably going to fight. And they’re probably going to make a whole pile of money to do it.

For Mayweather, it’s likely to be another influx of cash in a career that’s been filled with them. For McGregor, it’s going to be a life-changing sum, the likes of which he could never have imagined seeing from MMA alone.

And yes, it’s partially happening because the UFC is going to free up its biggest star to go chase the payday only boxing can provide.

And yes, Dana White is the figurehead at the front of the organization, the man who knows the fight game and has the ear of the ownership over at the WME-IMG offices.

But no, White is not some white knight allowing this fight to take place out of the goodness of his heart or out of some moral obligation to see McGregor get rich. So don’t let that narrative fool you because despite his work to keep it alive, there’s little altruism in White’s actions.

Time and again, White has said that he won’t stand in the way of McGregor making the kind of money a Mayweather bout will offer, even though it’s bad for UFC business to allow it. While there probably is some kernel of truth buried deep within that loaded proclamation, the purest reality is a bit different.

The fight will be phenomenal business for White and the UFC, with the promotion owning the right to promote McGregor and therefore being set to score a considerable cut of the monies associated with the bout. He’s acknowledged that all the egos involved make the deal hard to structure but also that there is so much cash on the table that it’s hard to imagine how the fight doesn’t come together.

In fact, it’s not hard to imagine a world where a crossover bout between the two biggest combat sports stars alive generates more revenue than any event the UFC has ever done on its own, instantly bolstering the promotion’s coffers in unprecedented fashion on the back of a single fighter and a single fight.

There’s also the notion that a McGregor loss is meaningless to his reign as an MMA monolith, as he’d be losing to the greatest boxer ever as an 0-0 competitor in that realm. Anything less than an instant knockout loss would embolden him to talk about his will to survive against Mayweather, and if he somehow managed to win, well, that just writes itself.

Yet here sits White, ignoring all of that while casually pushing the fight forward and playing it cool the whole way. Ol’ Good Guy Dana, just sitting in his office and washing his hands of any obstructions to McGregor fighting Mayweather because he’s so dang happy to see one of his guys make so much money in one night.

Only we know that’s not true. It never has been before, and there isn’t any reason it is now.

Everyone involved in this is getting paid big time—the UFC, White, McGregor, Mayweather and anyone else you can think to name. Suggesting motivations beyond that, particularly those focused on something as foreign to the fight game as a promoter being honestly good, is a bridge too far.

So stop making that a factor in any of the process. Just book the fight and sell it. That’s the only narrative anyone is interested in anyway.

The expected bout between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor is not yet official, but the projected numbers explain why both sides are so excited to get something done.

UFC president Dana White, who is helping put the fight together, provided the latest breakdown.

“It depends on how much the fight sells,” White said on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, via Shaun Al-Shatti of MMA Fighting. “And if the fight sells as well as I think it can, Floyd makes a little north of $100 (million) and Conor makes $75 (million).”

UFC President Dana White just dropped a bombshell on the combat sports world this morning (Wed. April 19, 2017).

White joined FS1’s The Herd with Collin Cowherd earlier today to discuss the status of the pending boxing superfight between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. White said on The Herd that McGregor’s bout agreement to make the combat sports spectacle happen will be done ‘in a few days.’

The UFC boss went on to say that negotiating with ‘Money’ would be next on his to-do list. McGregor will reportedly make a staggering $75 million while Mayweather will get $100 million (as expected):

McGregor took the opportunity to respond to the news on Twitter:

McGregor and Mayweather have been teasing the potential fight for quite some time now, with the foundation being laid out a year ago today when McGregor announced his ‘retirement’ from the sport after a fallout with the UFC in the lead-up to his initially scheduled rematch with Nate Diaz at UFC 200. McGregor soon made amends with the promotion, however, the heat between he and Mayweather never let up as the pair have been exchanging barbs at one another through the media the past few months.

‘The Notorious One’ has been taking some time off from Octagon competition since his lightweight title win over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 this past November, as he awaits the birth of his first child, but has been continuously campaigning for the Mayweather fight all the while. Could this thing actually be happening?
