Middleweight champion Michael Bisping is fighting Georges St-Pierre – or at least he supposedly is, pending a hard-to-find date for the bout – and he doesn’t care what the many critics of his pending payday think.

Most of those critics believe Bisping should forego the bout with a returning St-Pierre, the former welterweight champion who has never fought at 185 pounds, for a title defense with clear-cut number one contender Yoel Romero, an understandable stance given the fact “The Count” made his first and only title defense against retiring legend and then No. 14-ranked Dan Henderson last October.

But according to the outspoken Brit, he’s going to receive backlash no matter what he does, and he finds a bit of hypocrisy in that fact. The champ spoke up on the latest episode of the “Believe You Me” podcast (via FOX Sports) to offer the opinion that Conor McGregor, who’s currently out of the UFC teasing a potential boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, can do exactly what he’s doing and worse, and he’s lauded as the greatest fighter in MMA for it:

“Whatever I do I get [expletive] off everybody. Conor McGregor can do no wrong. He is Jesus reincarnated. He can walk on water. He can do whatever the [expletive] he wants. He can leave the sport of UFC and go chase a boxing match and that’s still the best thing ever, holding up two divisions whilst he’s at it.

“Me, Jesus Christ, all I try to do is get a big payday and I’m scum of the Earth. I am the devil.”

“The Count” didn’t stop there either, noting that whomever he did choose to defend the middleweight title against, all of the other top contenders in the currently stacked 185-pound fray will be disappointed, leaving him in a no-win situation. Bisping insists he’s fighting St-Pierre and they simply have to deal with it, so he suggested all of the chirpy top-ranked middleweights looking to get a fight with him do just what he did throughout his lengthy grind to a title shot – quit complaining and win fights:

“Here’s the thing, the top seven [fighters] are calling me out, whichever one of them, because they’re all tough. They’re all tough guys, let’s be honest. They’re all very, very good. Whichever one of them I pick, the other six are all going to [expletive] and whine and complain. So you can’t win,” Bisping said. “I’m fighting Georges St-Pierre, [expletive] deal with it. If you want to fight in the mean time, go ahead.

“Luke Rockhold’s still talking [expletive], he hasn’t put a glove on since I knocked him out in the first round. Yoel hasn’t fought in a long time. If you’re so good, continue to fight. When I didn’t have a title shot, when I wasn’t the champion and didn’t get a title shot, I didn’t whine and [expletive] and complain. I just got on with it and I kept fighting. I hoped and I always had that in my heart, I would keep fighting and keep doing what I can do and here I am. I got there in the end. So guys, stop whining, stop [expletive], just get on with it.”

It seems like the last year has been dominated by one storyline in the MMA world and that’s Conor McGregor’s quest to transcend MMA and fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. The idea has caught fire with mainstream sports fans and has picked up steam with those who want to see the fight. UFC President Dana White has committed himself to doing what he can to make the fight happen. The fight seems seemed like it was an impending reality. However, there’s a whole bunch of rain for that parade everyone is having.

Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President of Showtime Sports, recently spoke with Chris Mannix about the negotiations for the fight. In the interview, the Showtime executive wasn’t all that optimistic about the fight actually happening.

“The biggest battle in Mayweather-Pacquiao was both guys really thinking that the other wanted to do it,” said Espinoza. “That part has happened [with McGregor and Mayweather], so I think the real question – and it’s sort of a black box right now – is where’s the UFC really, on this? Do they, in fact, want it? Dana – speaking on behalf of, I assume, the UFC – is making noises that he’s more open to it but talk is talk. I haven’t seen a lot of progress either internally in the deal between the two of them or externally, the deal between that side and this side. It’s largely at a standstill. There hasn’t been a ton of progress and I think if they don’t move relatively quickly, people may move on. People may tire of it. But it really is something that needs to happen this year, or it probably won’t happen. Floyd’s on 18 months, two solid years come September since he’s fought. He’s still in great shape, but at a certain point, he’s not gonna do it after a while.”

Showtime was the home for every Mayweather PPV since signing with them in 2013 and figures to be the carrier for the super fight if it ends up happening. There will be a point where McGregor and the UFC will need to negotiate terms with Showtime as well as bout agreement terms with Mayweather. White has said that he intends to make this fight happen if he can, and given the fact that this bout necessarily ties up his lightweight champion until it’s done as it would be a good thing for the sport and the UFC. Espinoza postulates that the delay in negotiations stem from the UFC not really being committed to making the fight for fear of losing McGregor permanently.

“I think part of the fear on the UFC’s side is that they’ll never see Conor again. If he makes 50, 60, 70 and then you never see him in the ring, and he retires in Ireland and so much for their megastar.”

If White turns out to be right and McGregor earns $75M, it’s possible he opts to actually retire as he once threatened to do last year, which would have a big impact on the UFC as he is the promotion’s top fighter. If McGregor should win, suddenly a whole host of boxing matches become available to him that are far more lucrative than any UFC endeavor.

The biggest superfight in the history of combat sports could very well just be on the horizon.

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. are on the cusp of meeting inside of the squared circle, as UFC President Dana White revealed that ‘The Notorious One’ would be making a whopping $75 million for the potential showdown. Only on hurdle remains, however, before the bout can be officially locked in – coming to an agreement with ‘Money’ at the negotiations table.

McGregor’s manager, Audie Attar, joined The MMA Hour earlier today (Mon. April 24, 2017) to discuss the potential boxing bout, saying that nothing is set in stone quite yet (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“Listen, I think there’s fan interest, and I think that’s brought us to a point where this may happen,” Attar said. “But we’ll see. Nothing is set in stone. I think it’s one of those things that’s a work in progress, but it’s definitely trending in the right direction.”

As for what makes this fight between McGregor and Mayweather so massive, Attar believes it is the immense amount of fan interest from the combat sports world:

“I think first and foremost it’s just the fan interest,” he said. “I think Floyd and Conor organically just going back and forth, that kind of picked up the fan interest. Credit to Dana White and the UFC for recognizing a huge opportunity and wanting to be involved. I think that’s really the…I would say evolution of this whole thing.

“I think in today’s age of social media and media picking up on story lines and banter, people can also quantify and measure the viability of something like this from a business standpoint. It’s all happening organically, which is good.”

Attar then spoke of McGregor’s tendency to set ridiculously high goals for himself, and through the power of visualization, the heavy-handed Irishman somehow ends up accomplishing them. This situation with making the fight against Mayweather happen is no different, and everything is trending in the right direction:

“I can tell you that Conor is the type of athlete and individual when he focuses on something, he works towards it, and a lot of his focus and visions end up becoming a reality,” Attar said. “I think that’s something he’s always subscribed to in his career. I think it’s all trending in the right direction.”

Attar went on to reveal that no deadlines for a deal have been issued, and nor will they, but also stressed people to not believe everything they read as nothing has been done yet:

“Well, I would tell you, don’t always believe everything that you read,” he said. “Everything that’s great in life and business is always going to have some challenges and complications. But nevertheless if you work and keep your head down, and don’t bitch and moan about how tough something is, you don’t really focus on that negative energy. And so I haven’t. Everything has been organic like I said. And nothing’s done yet, so we’ll see how it all plays out.

“If it happens it would be an amazing thing for all parties involved.”
