Retired boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. accused UFC fighter Conor McGregor of ducking a fight against him in the latest war of words in the protracted negotiation between the two fighters as they attempt to iron out the details on a potential superfight.

“Conor McGregor, stop blowing smoke up people’s ass, you little [expletive],” Mayweather said in an interview with FightHype.com (h/t Damon Martin of Fox Sports). “If you want to fight, let’s make it happen you punk. Conor McGregor you don’t even want to fight you little [expletive], you little punk. Let’s make it happen.”

Mayweather also claimed McGregor was hiding behind the negotiating process to cover up the fact that he doesn’t want to take the fight at all:

There’s always been a lot of talk about Conor McGregor. My thing is this, a lot of times with competitors and athletes and fighters we can ask for certain things that we really don’t want. There’s a lot of barking but there’s no biting. When you talk about biting, sign the contract. Don’t talk the [expletive]. If you really want to fight sign the [expletive] contract and we can make it happen.

So just letting the world know that he’s full of [expletive]. He don’t really want to fight. ‘Oh I want to fight, I want to fight, I want to fight, Mayweather’s scared of me’ — well listen, I’m my own boss, let’s make the fight happen. You talking all that [expletive], you acting like you want to fight, I don’t think you really want to fight. Sign the contract and let’s make it happen.

Underneath the bluster of Mayweather’s comments, of course, is a negotiating tactic. If Mayweather can make it look as though McGregor is avoiding the fight rather than simply negotiating for terms that best suit the UFC star, perhaps Mayweather can seize the upper hand in negotiations.

Given McGregor’s savvy handle on promotion—and the fact that any fight has to be approved by the UFC because McGregor is under contract with the organization—it seems unlikely the tactic will work, however.

Indeed, the financial split on the fight appears to be a sticking point in negotiations, which Mayweather hinted at in his comments:

Conor McGregor has been telling the world ‘I want to fight Floyd Mayweather.’ If you really want to fight, let’s make the fight happen. You’re the ‘B’ side, I’m the ‘A’ side. At one particular time, I was the ‘B’ side. When they made me an offer, I didn’t cry, I didn’t complain, I took the offer and I went out there and fought and became the ‘A’ side and when I became the ‘A’ side, I demanded what I wanted.

He cannot demand anything because he’s not in the position to demand anything. If we offer you or your team offer you a certain amount of money, I don’t know what it is, take it and let’s make it happen.

It’s unlikely McGregor sees himself as the “B side” of this draw, of course.

Frankly, both fighters can claim equal “A-status” in a potential fight of this magnitude. Mayweather finished his career 49-0 and the highest earner in boxing history. He beat Manny Pacquiao in his last superfight between the two best boxers of a generation, though the fight came a few years after each fighter’s prime.

McGregor, meanwhile, is 21-3 in his professional fighting career and has held UFC’s featherweight and lightweight titles (he vacated the featherweight title in November after never defending it following his victory over Jose Aldo at UFC 194).

McGregor is not only arguably UFC’s best fighter, but he’s also easily its most charismatic. So expecting him to defer to Mayweather’s wishes in a superfight—or expecting the UFC to do so as well—is simply unrealistic.

And so the saga continues.

Sure, reigning UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is taking a break from fighting because his longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin is giving birth to their first child, but McGregor also made it clear after his historic win at last November’s UFC 205 from New York City that he’d like to have a discussion with the new UFC owners before he stepped foot back in the Octagon.

As far as what the discussion might consist of, the Irishman recently told GQ Style that he wants to negotiate his ‘worth’, also noting that he wants a ‘fatter check’:

“I want to negotiate what I’m worth. I want to put my analytics forward, man-to-man, and be like, ‘This is what I’m owed now. Pay me.’ And then we can talk,” he added.

“I mean…certainly, hell of a fatter check. Maybe potentially, down the road, an equity interest or something. I’m just letting them know I want something else.”

The “Notorious” one is already the highest paid fighter on the UFC roster, but he’s always in search of more, which is likely why he’s been campaigning for a boxing match with retired former pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

It’s unclear if McGregor has had his discussion with WME-IMG yet, but do you expect his next fight to take place in the Octagon.

Floyd Mayweather Calls Out Conor McGregor: “Sign The Paper”

If we’re to believe boxing great Floyd Mayweather, it’s on Conor McGregor to make his long-rumored boxing fight with “Money” happen.

Speaking during a recent media tour in the U.K., Mayweather told ESPN that if “The Notorious” really wants the bout, he simply has to sign the contract:

“If Conor McGregor really wants this fight to happen, stop blowing smoke up everybody’s ass.

“Sign the paper. Sign the paper. You said you were a boss, so just sign the paper and let’s make it happen.”

Those words sound like the most matter-of-fact statement Mayweather has directed at the UFC superstar since their super fight came out of left field last spring. However, the reality of the situation is that it’s not that easy, as Mayweather publicly made an offer including a payday of $15 million for McGregor – a number he expectedly balked at.

While the Irish trash talker has applied for his boxing license in California – he hasn’t gotten one in Nevada, where the fight would take place, due to his ongoing sanctions with with the NSAC following his bottle-throwing press conference at UFC 202.

The UFC arguably needs McGregor more than they ever have during a lackluster beginning to 2017, yet there’s nothing close to “The Notorious” officially returning to the octagon anytime soon, and much of that has to do with his efforts to book the fight with “Money.”

The two sides are assuredly bickering over just that, so the reality of signing the bout is not quite as easy as Mayweather suggests, because he appears to want the Irishman to sign his offer, which most likely isn’t up to the “Notorious” growing standards.

Let’s hope we’re not running into Mayweather vs. Pacquiao 2.

Canelo Alvarez Calls McGregor vs. Mayweather ‘Disrespectful To Boxing’

WBO light middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez isn’t too pleased with the possibility that UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather could be throwing down inside the boxing ring soon.

TMZ Sports recently caught up with the Mexican boxing star, who’s only career loss comes at the hands of ‘Money’, who told them that the talk of a possible superfight between ‘The Notorious One’ and Mayweather is a ‘joke.’ Alvarez took it a step further by calling the potential match-up ‘disrespectful to boxing.’

This isn’t the first time McGregor and Alvarez have shared a headline, as McGregor once accused the Mexican champ of ‘cherry picking’ his opponents. Alvarez responded by poking at ‘Notorious” cardio history inside the Octagon, saying he ‘gasses out after two rounds.’

With UFC President Dana White now onboard for the potential boxing bout between Mayweather and McGregor, having offered Mayweather $25 million to make the fight happen, the bout has never been closer to a reality than it is today. McGregor and Mayweather continue to poke fun at one another through social media in attempt to hype the fight, only increasing the combat sports world’s interest in the feud.

McGregor has obtained his boxing license in the state of California and is attempting to do the same in Las Vegas, where Mayweather prefers to compete in all his bouts. If the Irish knockout artist is able to land a license to lace up the gloves in ‘Sin City’, things could get very interesting for the potential of this fight happening.

While neither McGregor or Mayweather are slated to fight anytime soon, Canelo has a date with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 6, 2017.
