UFC 270

UFC 270 is reportedly set to host two epic title fights. Francis Ngannou and Ciryl Gane are expected to unify the heavyweight division at the event on January 22 according to La Sueur. The French outlet also claims that Israel Adesanya will rematch Robert Whittaker for the middleweight title on the card which is due to take place in Las Vegas early next year.

Ngannou captured heavyweight gold earlier this year when he knocked out Stipe Miocic inside two rounds at UFC 260. ‘The Predator’ was due to make his first title defence against Derrick Lewis at UFC 265 but was unable to make the August 7 date and asked the UFC to postpone the fight.

The promotion opted against that option and instead created an interim heavyweight title for Lewis and Gane to scrap over in Houston, Texas back in August at UFC 265.

‘Bon Gamin’ looked flawless against Lewis, stopping the usually tough ‘Black Beast’ inside three rounds to improve his undefeated record to 10-0 and set up a hugely anticipated fight against Ngannou.

Whittaker was sensationally dethroned inside two rounds when he squared off against Adesanya at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia in October 2019. ‘Stylebender’ badly wobbled Whittaker at the end of round one before closing the show in the second frame.

‘The Reaper’ has done well to work himself back into title contention since then. He has become the clear number one contender at middleweight with decision wins over Darren Till, Jared Cannonier, and Kelvin Gastelum.

Adesanya has since defended the 185lb title on three occasions. The New Zealander also stepped up to light-heavyweight to challenge Jan Blachowicz but fell short, suffering a decision defeat – the first and only loss of his MMA career.

Do you think we will see a new champion crowned at UFC 270?

Israel Adesanya vs. Robert Whittaker 2 Official For UFC 271

The Israel Adesanya vs. Robert Whittaker rematch has now officially been announced for UFC 271 in the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, officially putting an end to the initial report that the bout would take place at UFC 270 in January.

It is …

It is worth noting that Adesanya reacted to the announcement with a cap, which is modern slang for “lying.”

Adesanya’s reaction could mean nothing, he could be trolling, or it could be a sign that all is not what it seems.

Here is what Adesanya’s manager Eugene Bareman said about the rematch with Robert Whittaker just last week:

“Rob and his people, his wonderful manager, can’t secure this fight and they’re panicking,” Bareman said in an interview with Submission Radio. “So, they put out these stupid tweets and this and that. It’s like, mate, just relax, boys. Just train. That’s all we’re doing. You guys do the same. Let us handle the business because you guys are incapable. That management team’s incapable.

“So, we’ll just handle the business side of things, and if this is the direction that the fight is going to go, towards Robert, then we’ll secure it for you. We’ll do your job for you. But stop with the social media stuff. Like, that doesn’t mean anything, it doesn’t do anything. It just shows your insecurity about the fight. Don’t worry. We’ll sort the fight out.”

Assuming the UFC has, in fact, locked in the bout, it will be a rematch from the 2019 bout between Adesanya and Whittaker that saw Adesanya capture the middleweight strap due to a second-round KO/TKO.

Adesanya has gone on to successfully defend the title against Yoel Romero, Paulo Costa, and Marvin Vettori to prove he is the top dog at 185 pounds at the moment.

As for Whittaker, he brought himself right back into a title fight by stringing together three straight wins over Darren Till, Jared Cannonier, and Kelvin Gastelum.

MMA News will keep you posted on any further on this story and if there is any “capping” happening in connection to it.

Who do you think wins this rematch: Israel Adesanya or Robert Whittaker?

Add former UFC middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold, to the list of UFC fighters who have made their opinions known about the controversial issue regarding UFC fighter pay.

Rockhold is in the middle of training camp as he gets ready to face Sean Strickland at UFC 268, in the former middleweight champion’s return to 185 pounds and his first fight in a little over two years. Rockhold last competed in a one-bout run at light heavyweight, getting knocked out by Jan Blachowicz at UFC 239.

Many UFC fighters around the promotion, including Jon Jones and Francis Ngannou, have made their voices heard when it comes to the ongoing issue of fighter pay. This comes after former MMA fighters such as Tyron Woodley and Vitor Belfort have earned an eye-popping fortune for fighting in the boxing ring.

Despite more fighters getting involved in the conversation by the day, Rockhold feels those at the top of the sport need to lead the fight if any form of change is possible.

“No one has enough balls,” Rockhold said in an interview with Ariel Helwani. “That’s the problem. Not enough to [make a difference]. There are very few people that have the fucking balls, but to get the right amount of people together to do that thing, it would never happen. Not in any foreseeable future.”

“If they’re going to do that to Francis and then no one else [speaks up], his two brothers (Kamaru Usman and Israel Adesanya) aren’t going to get behind him and sack up and be the men they should’ve been when he got shelved — you’ve got two Nigerian brothers, they should’ve just stood by him and been men, and maybe that could change the landscape.”

Just five months after Francis Ngannou earned the heavyweight belt, the UFC opted for an interim title bout between Ciryl Gane and Derrick Lewis. This allegedly stemmed from dormant contract negotiations between Ngannou and the UFC brass. Rockhold thinks that moment was a clear example of the severity of the issue at hand.

As Rockhold and many others continue to speak up on the fighter pay issue in the UFC, it appears that UFC president Dana White and the upper class of the sport don’t feel that anything is wrong with compensation.

What are your thoughts on Luke Rockhold’s comments regarding UFC fighter pay?
