Last March, Stephen A. Smith shared his belief that the best thing to ever happen in UFC history took place when Francis Ngannou knocked out Stipe Miocic to become the heavyweight champion.

The following article published last year explains how he came to that conclusion. Tonight, Ngannou’s follow-up performance to this KO will come when he takes on Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 to unify the UFC undisputed heavyweight championship.

Headline: Stephen A: Ngannou’s KO The Greatest Thing To Ever Happen To UFC

The First Take crew is showering new UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou with the ultimate praise.

Francis Ngannou made history as the first man from Cameroon to become a UFC champion when he knocked out Stipe Miocic at UFC 260. In doing so, the continent of Africa now has three current champions on the UFC roster. The feeling of joy Ngannou had for achieving those two things has been articulated by Ngannou in the aftermath of the event, and he has already been commended far and wide for his improvements, his approach, and his achievement.

In an appearance on ESPN’s First Take on Monday, host Stephen A. Smith threw one more massive heap of praise Ngannou’s way.

“I caught your knockout on Saturday. I called it the greatest thing that’s ever happened to the UFC,” Smith told Ngannou. “Because when you’re the heavyweight champion of the world and you come into the Octagon with bad intentions like Mike Tyson did in boxing, like George Foreman did before him, that’s the greatest thing for a pugilistic sport.”

There’s been some big things to happen in the nearly 30-year history of the UFC: becoming sanctioned by state athletic commissions after being viewed as a bloodsport, women finally being allowed to compete in the promotion after 20 years, Conor McGregor’s rise to fame, the partnership with ESPN, just to name a few. But Smith’s argument comes with the premise that nothing can match the impact of a mainstream heavyweight destroyer.

As someone with a great amount of experience covering the pugilistic sport of boxing, Smith’s co-host Max Kellerman co-signed Smith’s statement to a degree but seemed to stop at the “potential” Ngannou’s win carries as opposed to proclaiming it the greatest thing in UFC history full stop.

“I agree with Stephen A,” Kellerman began. “This has a chance to be, what you did now, a turning point in the history of the UFC in the sense that light heavy was always the glamor division. Brock Lesnar looked for a second, like, ‘Can he be that guy at heavyweight?’ But he couldn’t consistently stay at that level. You now have a fight maybe lined up with Jon Jones.

“Because the UFC champion would beat the heavyweight champion in boxing in an actual fight, that guy’s the baddest man on the planet, especially if he’s a guy that fights like you. So this could be a turning point in the history of your sport. That’s a tremendous achievement.”

Ever the gracious giant, Ngannou took his praise in stride. During the interview, he noted the impact that Kamaru Usman had on his victory and discussed what it means to him to be a champion for his countrymen and his family. Ngannou’s story and UFC 260 achievement is certainly mainstream news now, and only time will tell if he will be able to carry the heavyweight torch to the places Smith and Kellerman believe he could.

What are your thoughts on Stephen A. Smith’s and Max Kellerman’s level of praise for new UFC champion Francis Ngannou?

Jon Jones Should Make $50M For Francis Ngannou Fight – Mike Winkeljohn

Jon Jones

Jon Jones should earn a monstrous payday for his highly anticipated heavyweight debut according to his long-time coach Mike Winkeljohn.

Francis Ngannou became the heavyweight champion at UFC 260 when he spectacularly knocked out Stipe Miocic in the second round of their highly anticipated rematch.

Jones immediately took to Twitter after UFC 260. “Show me the money,” he wrote.

Dana White got wind of these comments and suggested Jones should consider moving down to middleweight. The UFC boss also revealed Derrick Lewis is most likely going to be the man who gets the first crack at the new heavyweight king.

During a recent interview with Submission Radio, Winkeljohn revealed he was not surprised to see White be so dismissive of his student’s financial demands.

“To be expected. You know what, Dana is the best in the world at the fight business, there’s no doubt about that. And for a reason,” Winklejohn said. “Jon’s the best in the world for what he does, and for a reason. So, of course they each went their own [way]. To be expected. That’s the game. There is a fight game where he’s got to fight Francis, and at the same time he’s got that game, the UFC. They’ve got to decide how much they want to sell that many pay-per-views and how much is Jon Jones worth to them to sell that many pay-per-views. And Jon’s gotta decide, where is that point where I’m motivated to take that risk to continue at my legacy and being the best ever to play the game. Cause there’s always a risk. Someone can always slip and fall. People can fall in the bath tub. Something can always possibly happen. So, is it worth the risk? How much money is worth it to take that risk?”

The famed MMA coach was then asked how much does he think Jones should earn for fighting up at heavyweight against Ngannou.

“Gosh, I look at the big fights. I think this fight can be easily as [big as] some of the big Mayweather fights out there,” Winklejohn replied. “What did Floyd Mayweather make? A hundred million? I don’t know. You know, that type of thing. He was kind of his own promoter. So, Jon’s gotta share that with the UFC as far as on pay-per-view buys. But I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a fifty-million-dollar fight. And the UFC still makes bank, and is able to pay off a lot of the debt they have and go forward. I think the UFC needs a superstar like Jon Jones. I think Conor was the guy for a while, and he’s fallen off. But those big names is what makes the UFC money, ultimately.”

How much do you think Jon Jones should be paid to fight Francis Ngannou?

Francis Ngannou

UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has a message for Jon Jones. Get ready.

Ngannou is fresh off his knockout win over Stipe Miocic at UFC 260 this past Saturday and seems ready to line up his first title defense against Jon Jones.

During this time, Jones has been involved in a very public dispute with the UFC over his pay. He even said he wanted to be cut by the promotion in a now deleted Twitter rant.

Even with the dark cloud surrounding Jones and his negotiations, Ngannou wants the UFC to get the deal done.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, Ngannou has a message that is loud and clear for Jones. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“Well, my message to Jon would be to get ready and to be serious and to put in the work because it’s going to happen, the biggest challenge of his life. I won’t be going in there to play with him like those guys have been doing. It’s going to feel different. He can put whatever weight he wants on him, that doesn’t take anything less of my strength and my power,” Ngannou said.

Ngannou vs Jones is one of, if not the biggest fight the UFC can make right now. The biggest variable is whether or not Jones and the UFC can come to some sort of agreement.

He has been famous for his rampages on social media in the past and the present. I am almost positive that we can see one about this as well.

However, Jones has spent the past year bulking up and putting on a decent amount of weight in preparation for his move to heavyweight.

Do you think the UFC will be able to book Francis Ngannou vs Jon Jones?
