Francis Ngannou is riding high going into his heavyweight bout with Alistair Overeem at UFC 218, which takes place this Saturday.

This bout will serve as the co-main event of the evening at Little Caesars Arena following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

If you recall, Overeem lost to heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic by first-round knockout at UFC 203 just 14 months ago.

The UFC prospect thinks there’s little interest in a second fight and that the UFC wants him to win this fight as it would be a fresh matchup with the current UFC champion.

He also thinks that if he is able to win this fight, then he would deserve a crack at the gold after beating Overeem.

“Not just because (I’m a fresh contender), because I deserve it,” Ngannou said at today’s UFC 218 open workouts (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie). “I’m contender No. 4, and Alistair is contender No. 1. After I beat him, what should be my ranking? Probably No. 1. Then I’ll get right to the title shot. I’m on five straight wins, and this one will be my sixth.

“I’m the contender who hasn’t fought,” he continued. “Ahead of me are Cain Velasquez, Fabricio Werdum, and Alistair Overeem. Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem already fought and loss to Miocic. Cain has an injury. I’m the right one. After I beat Alistair Overeem, I will be contender No. 1.”

Ngannou is itching to get back in the octagon after a more than 10-month layoff following his knockout of Andrei Arlovski at UFC on FOX 23 in January,

“I think I have good motivation,” Ngannou said. “I have a lot of good people behind me. I have my personal goal, something that I grew up with. I have my background, something I don’t want to live again. I have my family back home I want to help. I have people back waiting for me that rely on me. … There are many things collected together that help me.”

“I’m probably the faster one with Alistair Overeem,” Ngannou said. “I believe that I am the best, and I will prove that I am the best.”

UFC 218 is a few days away and the third episode of Embedded was released on the UFC’s YouTube channel.

In the episode, heavyweight Francis Ngannou measures himself against strawweight Michelle Waterson during a media day in LA, then does some California sightseeing. Featherweight champion Max Holloway stays on track with a personal chef and a fowling expedition. Heavyweight Alistair Overeem, lightweight Eddie Alvarez and featherweight Jose Aldo arrive in Detroit along with the sun. There are several fighters who find themselves at the top spots in the UFCs heavyweight division simply because there have been no real challengers coming in to repeal and replace them. Leaving the heavyweight division lacking in terms of both sporting quality and entertainment value.

However, with the introduction of Francis Ngannou, things have looked up for the heavyweight division. He has been a packet of energy in an otherwise boring weight division and come UFC 218, Ngannou will really get the chance to showcase his talents as he comes up against aging Alistair Overeem who seems to have been around forever.

Having said that, Overeem is certainly not someone you can push around, he might be an aging star, but he will not go out without putting up a good fight. He has always improved in terms of skills and fitness despite his age not being on the prime side. He has some sharp kick boxing skills and a mean guillotine choke under his sleeve and is a pragmatic fighter with a good amount of experience under his belt, enough to cause problems for Ngannou. The UFC seems to have put together the only possible fight which is palatable in the heavyweight division.

Prediction – Overeem to win by unanimous decision.
