Alistair Overeem could be reentering the UFC heavyweight title picture very soon.

“The Reem” joined The MMA Hour earlier today (Mon. October 2, 2017) to discuss his upcoming fight with Francis Ngannou at the UFC 218 pay-per-view (PPV) on December 2nd in Detroit, Michigan. Overeem stated that he has been informed he will receive a heavyweight title shot if victorious over Ngannou, but didn’t really need to be told that since he’s currently ranked No. 1 (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I didn’t need to be — logical thinking,” Overeem said. “I’m ranked No. 1 now, so the way [I see it], I would be eligible to fight for the belt now, but I also stated that in previous interviews if I need to run through somebody else before, then we’re gonna do that. That is what it is right now. Again, I’m a fighter, I like to be active. To me, that is the best. Some fighters, they are not fighting for a year or a year and a half. I just need to get back in there every four or five months.”

Currently sitting at 37-years-old Overeem admits that this is likely his last big run in mixed martial arts (MMA):

“Last crack, never say never,” Overeem said. “Again, I love what I do, right? But you notice you’re getting older and you notice there’s more things in life. However, motivation is still super high and we’re still winning our fights. But you have to be realistic, too. You don’t want to end up with too much damage to your body, because there’s life after the sport.”

Overeem is very aware of what Ngannou brings to the table, but is confident that he and his team can produce a winning recipe to down the beloved heavyweight prospect and get back to the UFC heavyweight title picture:

“This is like a legit guy,” Overeem said. “You can see he’s strong as an ox. He’s motivated. He’s willing to fight. I will be kind of his first big name test. I’m very motivated as well. And it’s gonna be a great fight — great matchup.”

“It’s gonna be my job, my team’s job to stop him and to show who is No. 1 — literally who’s No. 1, because I’m ranked No. 1. And then solidify my shot for the title against Stipe.”

Francis Ngannou’s Octagon return is on the horizon, and it’s against the stiffest competition he’s ever seen.

The Frenchman stands at six-foot-four and has a ridiculous reach of 83.5 inches. Ngannou has only lost once in his mixed martial arts career, dropping a unanimous decision loss in his second-ever fight. Each and every one of his victories have come in either the first or second round via finish. Of his 10 career victories, Ngannou has won six by knockout and four by submission. His last Octagon appearance saw him take home a first round knockout win over ex-UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski.

Ngannou has been viewed as one of the most promising heavyweight prospects today, and according to a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, he’ll be taking on former K-1 champ Alistair Overeem at UFC 218 from Detroit, Michigan:

Overeem has had a great run in his MMA career as of late, previously racking up a four-fight win streak over the likes of Stefan Struve, Roy Nelson, Junior dos Santos, and Andrei Arlovski. That earned “The Reem” a shot at Stipe Miocic’s heavyweight title. Unfortunately for the Dutchman, Overeem suffered a first round knockout loss to Miocic and was forced to go back to the drawing board. He has since racked up back-to-back wins over Mark Hunt and former UFC heavyweight king Fabricio Werdum.

A win over Ngannou, who looks to be the most promising heavyweight prospect MMA has seen in years, would definitely propel him back into the title conversation. UFC 218 will go down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday December 2, 2017.

Francis Ngannou: I Knock Out Stipe Miocic When We Fight

Rising heavyweight contender Francis Ngannou was scheduled to face former champion Junior Dos Santos at UFC 215 earlier this month, but the bout was scrapped after Dos Santos was flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping violation.

Now, Ngannou is eyeing a fight with either top contender Alistair Overeem, or heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. Not only does “The Predator” feel as if he would ‘surprise’ both men, but he also predicted that he’d knock out Miocic if they were to fight:

“I already know everything they’re able to do,” Ngannou told ESPN of potential opponents Miocic and Overeem. “Everyone knows all of their skills. They don’t know mine. They’re still discovering mine. I’m bringing a surprise in every fight. I’ve never had the opportunity to show my whole game yet.

“I knock Stipe out when we fight. I think under three rounds, I knock him out.”

As far as which of the two he expects to fight next, Ngannou said it’s ‘not clear’ right now, although he’s hoping to fight in December:

“It’s not clear right now,” Ngannou said. “I want Stipe, but they are also talking about Overeem. I’ll probably fight either [UFC 218] on Dec. 2 in Detroit or [UFC 219] on Dec. 30 in Las Vegas.

“I’d prefer to fight in Detroit just because it’s 28 days sooner,” he said. “I had a fight this month and it didn’t happen, so I’m just waiting. It sucks.”

Miocic hasn’t competed since stopping Dos Santos last May, but he recently said that he’s anticipating a return in December or January, so perhaps Ngannou could indeed be the next title challenger.

Since entering the UFC in Dec. 2015, “The Predator” has picked up five consecutive victories, with all five of them coming by way of stoppage. He most recently knocked out Andrei Arlovski last January.
