While Francisco Trinaldo respects Herb Dean’s position as the referee, even he felt his fight with Jai Herbert could have been stopped sooner.

One of the major talking points of UFC Fight Island 3 this past weekend was Dean’s controversial stoppage of Trinaldo’s knockout win over Herbert.

Herbert fell to the ground after a delayed response with Trinaldo refusing to land more strikes as he waited for Dean to stop the fight. However, Dean let it continue as Trinaldo landed a couple more before the fight was eventually stopped.

The stoppage has since led to a lot of debate as well as controversy with commentator Dan Hardy notably shouting at Dean to stop the fight at the time. As far as Trinaldo is concerned? He believes the fight could have been stopped earlier.

However, it ultimately depends on the referee.

“It could’ve been stopped earlier, but I’m a fighter, not a referee,” Trinaldo told reporters at the post-fight press conference (via MMA Junkie). “I go there to do my job and the referee is the one in charge.

“I saw and stopped a little bit and waited, but the referee didn’t stop the fight so I continued on. The referee is in charge.”

Trinaldo Wants Diego Sanchez

The controversy took some of the gloss off Trinaldo’s win as he continues to be a major problem even at the age of 41.

However, he notably missed weight for the first time against Herbert and now plans on moving up to welterweight. He even has an opponent in mind.

“‘Ive thought about it before and I really want to fight Diego Sanchez,” Trinaldo explained. “I’ve been watching him fight for a long time, I have a training partner who faced him back in the day and it really made me train even harder.

“I think it’s a fight where the fans are really going to be the ones winning and it’s just a fight I really want to have in the UFC. He’s also a veteran like me.”

Age is clearly not a factor for the Brazilian, who feels any fighter can continue fighting as long as they have the passion to do so.

“I think a fighter needs to fight for as long as he has that desire and that want to fight,” Trinaldo added. “If he doesn’t feel like he no longer has that passion, then he should stop fighting. I really have that desire, this is what I do best. And if one day I don’t feel like doing this anymore, I’ll just set up a hammock under a tree and just chill out.”

Francisco Trinaldo is looking to run things back with Kevin Lee after UFC Brasilia.

Back in 2017, the two fought in Brazil where it was Lee who earned a second-round submission win to snap the Brazilian’s seven-fight winning streak. Since then, Lee had a shot at interim gold while Trinaldo has gone just 4-3 including beating John Makdessi at UFC Brasilia.

Although Trinaldo got the win, he didn’t expect it to play out like that.

“I expected John Makdessi to be more aggressive. I thought he was going to move forward, but he didn’t,” he said after the fight (via MMAJunkie). “Because of my last result, which I’m sure I won, I knew I needed to come with more desire to finish as quickly as possible. I didn’t, but I dominated from beginning to end.”

Not only did he get the win, but Francisco Trinaldo also had the opportunity to fight in front of no fans. It was a first for him. He says it was a cool experience and reminded him of just fighting in the gym.

“I have a lot of stories to tell. Besides being one of the athletes with the most number of fights in Brazil. I now had the opportunity to fight in an event without any fans,” he explained. “It was really cool – it felt like I was fighting in a closed-door gym.”

With the win, Trinaldo is on a two-fight winning streak and looking to fight up in the lightweight rankings. The 41-year-old is hoping that person will be Kevin Lee who lost in the main event to Charles Oliveira.

Trinaldo knows it would be a great fight and one that makes sense ranking-wise.

“I want to fight with the top-ranked athletes in the [division]. I would love to face Kevin Lee and be able to defeat him,” Trinaldo said.

But, Lee said after the fight we may not see him for a few years so Trinaldo’s wish may not come to fruition.

Francisco Trinaldo is looking to reenter the top 15 of the UFC lightweight rankings.

Trinaldo outpointed Bobby Green at UFC Sao Paulo on Saturday to return to the win column. Having fought on home soil, the Brazilian wants to do it again when the promotion returns to Brasilia on March 14.

“Massaranduba” lived in Brasilia early in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career and would love to compete there. He even has an opponent in mind in Edson Barboza, who he respectfully called out:

“I want to fight in Brasilia,” Trinaldo said in an interview with Combate (via Bloody Elbow). “I have nothing against Barboza, who, to me, is the best Muay Thai fighter. Can you imagine me and Barboza fighting in Brasilia? I think the fans would enjoy the hell out of that. I like Barboza, I think it would be interesting to fight him. People like him a lot. I’ve defeated some guys he has defeated, too.

“I’m not challenging him, I just think it would be a good fight for the fans in Brasilia, a main event or something to sell for the public. I’m sure we’ll throw down. Barboza is tough, but I have tough sparring partners. Muay Thai guys, like him. Our gym is good at striking. I can go five rounds, all striking. Here in Brazil, few fighters have more fans than me.”

Barboza is on a two-fight losing skid, having lost to Justin Gaethje and Paul Felder earlier this year. Maybe a fight with Trinaldo is something that could interest him?

Francisco Trinaldo was not happy at all with his loss to Alexander Hernandez at UFC San Antonio this past weekend.

The two lightweights collided on the main card of UFC San Antonio in a fight that was rather uneventful. Still, many felt that Trinaldo had done enough to win the decision. In fact, 11 of the 13 media scorecards on MMA Decisions had the Brazilian winning the fight.

However, the three judges scoring the fight unfortunately saw it differently as Hernandez emerged victorious with scorecards of 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27. But for Trinaldo, Hernandez did not win a single round:

“I’m still a bit upset,” Trinaldo told MMA Fighting. “They shamelessly took the win away from me. I thought I was winning… I could have done more, trying to knock him out, but it’s tough. It’s tough to fight here. If they want to build this kid they have to start giving him easy fights, otherwise he won’t get anywhere. He doesn’t belong here. Everybody knows he won’t get anywhere.

“He didn’t win one round. He didn’t land one strike that hurt me. Every strike I landed, he would open his eyes wide open. Just watch the fight. I know it’s not UFC’s fault, but these judges have to judge marbles tournaments instead. They suck. They took my win away and I’m the only one who was really harmed.”

“Massaranduba” knows the UFC doesn’t control the judges, but if Hernandez gets the win, he wants his win bonus at the very least:

“If they want to put a win on his record, go for it, but I want my win bonus. I deserve it,” Trinaldo explained. “I went there to put a beating on him and he just ran. Everybody saw I won. UFC employees were shocked, they don’t know how they gave that kid the win. The least they can do is give me my win bonus.”

Trinaldo concluded with some strong words for Hernandez:

“I train hard every single say, focused, to come here and lose like that,” Trinaldo added. “This guy came here all cocky, feeling like a badass… I always say fighters fear no one so don’t come here mean mugging. This kid acts all cocky, but when the cage closes he’s a p*ssy. They want to turn this p*ssy into a man.”
