Even for Frank Shamrock, the news a week ago of Zuffa purchasing Strikeforce was something the Strikeforce icon did not see coming.

“I was pretty shocked,” Shamrock said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I think it was Saturday morning and we had a birthday party for a friend and I was completely blown over by it.”

Shamrock has arguably been the face of the Strikeforce promotion. It was Shamrock whom Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker called upon in March 2006 to headline the promotion’s initial foray into MMA. Shamrock was the first Strikeforce middleweight champion and currently works as a color commentator under Showtime to call Strikeforce events.

Frank Shamrock When Frank Shamrock paroled out of Folsom Prison in the early nineties, he had narrowed his career choices down to three possibilities.

“I was going to be a physical therapist, or an exotic dancer, or I was going to do this no-holds-barred fighting thing that Ken [Shamrock] was doing. And I didn’t know anything about any of them.”

Shamrock had spent most of the last decade in one institutionalized setting or another, whether it was group homes, youth crisis centers, or prison. His adopted father, Bob Shamrock, pointed him in the direction of the Lion’s Den, then an unknown gym for a mostly unknown sport, and run by Frank’s adopted older brother Ken. The first day Shamrock walked in the door, he was told he’d be getting a “tryout.”

For 15 years, Frank Shamrock suffered through the bumps, bruises, and breaks that come along with being a pro fighter, and he never had to wonder whether it was worth it.

Not until one afternoon when he was on his living room floor, trying to help his baby daughter learn to walk. A sudden back spasm struck him – one of many in a career plagued with lower back problems – and briefly paralyzed him on the floor.

“My daughter was around one [year old] at the time, so she didn’t know what was going on,” Shamrock said. “But I was like, I can’t even get up to help her, so I’m not sure how much more of this I should be doing. That’s about when I decided to stop.”

Before you ask, the video above is not a leaked sketch from next month’s MMA Awards. Frank Shamrock really started an anti-bullying organization after some trolls on the Internet hurt his 37-year-old feelings recently.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not condoning bullying in any way shape or form. I used to work doing PR for an anti-bullying program that is recognized as part of grade school curriculums. I just think this thing reeks of being opportunistic. Maybe Frank saw the attention that Daniel Puder’s anti-bullying crusade has gotten him and decided to hop on the bus.
