Gray Maynard clinched his shot at the UFC lightweight title with a win over Kenny Florian in August. On the same night, Frankie Edgar defended his division championship by defeating BJ Penn. Now the two will share another date, this time with gold on the line.
The UFC lightweight stars will square off for the 155-pound championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas during the New Year’s Day UFC 125 event, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to MMA Fighting.

Ben Henderson is gearing up for a potential title defense against Anthony Pettis at the end of the year, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t think about how he would match up against the the rest of the world’s best lightweights.
When asked on last week’s episode of The MMA Hour about a fight against current UFC 155-pound king Frankie Edgar, Henderson appeared very intrigued in matching up against the man he considers to be the best lightweight in the world.
“If I were to fight Frankie Edgar, I would approach it very confidently,” Henderson said. “I would be excited about that match-up. I would go get it. Hands down, I would go get it.”

MMA’s pathetic collective bitch session about the current trend of wrestlers kicking everybody’s asses reached its shrill and whiny fever pitch this week. With the UFC co…
Add to the list of the aggrieved the already insufferable Shinya Aoki, who tells MMA Fighting.com that – in the wake of his own soul-crushing defeat by Gilbert Melendez and idol BJ Penn’s second straight loss to Edgar – he’s not too down with all this wrestling stuff.
Since Frankie Edgar cruised to another Unanimous Decision victory over long-time, lightweight king, BJ Penn last month, a collective ‘he IS that effin good’ has fired throughout the MMA world. Since Frankie Edgar cruised to another Unanimous Decision victory over long-time, lightweight king, BJ Penn last month, a collective ‘he IS that effin good’ has fired throughout the MMA world. Of course, after Frankie took out BJ the first time, many observers of the sport remained somewhat unconvinced of Edgar’s standing, but now the Jersey fighter’s bandwagon is filling up with plenty of hop-ons and deservedly so.
For example, in a recent interview with Fighters Only Magazine, Ross Pearson talked in length about recent training sessions he’s had with the lightweight champ, and the British lightweight was obviously pretty damn impressed with Edgar’s game.
“I think Frankie is the kind of guy who is very scrappy, he has great wrestling, great foot speed, I think he can hold it for a while,”…“We did a good eight rounds and I enjoyed it. Like I say to everyone, you have to find [your opponent’s] weaknesses and exploit them but it was hard to find a weakness with Frankie. He had good stand-up, good footwork and his takedowns are unbelievable.”
Yeah, we’re thinking BJ would probably agree with the summary above, after all, until Penn ran into Edgar, we were all debating about when would be the appropriate time to officially unveil the ‘Congrats on Cleaning Out the Division’ banner. How the times have changed…Pearson is of course taking on Cole Miller at next week’s UFC Fight Night, which should be a fantastic bout—to bet head here.

Chael Sonnen replaced Franklin McNeil as John Anik’s other wingman alongside Kenny Florian on the latest episode of MMA Live and the trio proved itself a major improvement over the traditional line-up. Not only did he come off as a seasoned vet on camera, Chael also added to his vast depth of knowledge with a plethora of Sonnenisms like the one he used when describing the pending match-up between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
"Well, listen, the fight has to happen. It’s already happened once and Maynard got the edge on him. I think Frankie’s better now. I like it from a competitive standpoint. It needs to take place," Sonnen said. "It’s the right fight. From a business standpoint, acting as though Maynard versus Edgar is going to sell out an arena is about as optimistic as holding onto Jim Morrison’s mail."
During the segment, which originally aired on Thursday, the durable UFC middleweight confirmed that if Anderson Silva’s injured ribs heal in time, they will square off at UFC 125 which is being planned for Saturday, January 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Chael Sonnen almost shocked the MMA world at UFC 117 when he came minutes away from snatching the middleweight title belt from Anderson Silva. Of course, his near-perfect performance ended in heartbreak when he was submitted in the late stages of the fifth round.
We’ll know later next year if Sonnen learned anything from that night in Oakland, Calif., but one thing’s for certain: thousands of miles away in New Jersey, Frankie Edgar, the UFC lightweight champion who was gearing up to defend his title against BJ Penn just three weeks later, learned a valuable lesson while watching Sonnen’s loss to Silva.
“I learned some stuff from Chael that night,” Edgar said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “He was just constant pressure and didn’t give Anderson a chance to breathe except for that one second that he got caught in the triangle. So I kind of tried to learn from that; to put the pressure on but don’t be reckless while you are doing so.”
Unlike Sonnen, Edgar fought the perfect fight at UFC 118. He dominated Penn for five full rounds and proved that his UFC 112 win over “The Prodigy” was no fluke after all.
