Freddie Roach says Jake Paul is just 'Okay' Ahead of Mike Tyson Fight: "You know, a club fighter"

Jake Paul will have youth on his side when he steps inside the ring with legendary pugilist ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson this November. According to iconic boxing trainer Freddie Roach, that’s about all he’ll have working in his favor.

When Paul goes toe-to-toe with the former unified heavyweight world champion in Arlington, Texas, there will be a 31-year age gap between the two generational stars. That factoid has sparked a lot of debate over whether or not the fight should be happening with many believing that Tyson is taking an unnecessary risk against the 28-year-old ‘Problem Child’ from Cleveland.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson

Roach, who trained Tyson during the twilight of his professional boxing career, recently recalled what it was like taking punches from the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ during an interview with DAZN.

“Mike’s a great guy and I did train him for a couple of fights before the end of his career, but his heart wasn’t really in it at that time. If he didn’t knock you out in a couple of rounds he’d get a torn meniscus in his knee or an injury somewhere here or there.

“But the thing is Mike is a great puncher, he trains very hard. Being with Mike for two fights it was a lot of fun, I enjoyed it. Catching him on the mitts was very difficult and a lot of fun. Getting whacked by Mike Tyson with the right hook isn’t my favorite spot but I lived through it!” (h/t Seconds Out)

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson

Roach has been unimpressed with what he’s seen out of Jake Paul

Roach has also seen Jake Paul putting in work at the gym and offered his honest opinion of the YouTube star’s skills.

“The kid’s okay,” Roach told FightHype. “You know, a club fighter, I don’t know. I’ve never really met him. He was in my gym and they wanted to work, use the ring. Okay, go ahead.”

Paul is 10-1 in his professional boxing career thus far, though very few of those bouts have come against legitimate boxers. The Problem Child’ has primarily made a name for himself competing against past-their-prime MMA stars like Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva, and Nate Diaz.

The few fights he has won against actual boxers came against a pair of no-name talents who had not been active in the sport for years. Meanwhile, his lone loss came against Tommy Fury, a fighter who is more of a reality TV star than a fighter these days. Paul lost the February 2023 bout via split decision.

Tony Ferguson

Tony Ferguson is looking to get back to his dominant ways in the UFC Lightweight division. Subsequently, Ferguson has decided to add legendary boxing coach Freddie Roach into his corner after realising he needed to make a change.

Tony Ferguson used to be a powerful force in the UFC Lightweight division. However, back-to-back defeats to Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira has certainly put El Cucuy’s title aspirations on hold. In true Ferguson fashion, the 37-year-old took to social media to shed light on some of his grievances. Rather interestingly, Ferguson points to flagrant errors from his cornermen and training partners. “When A Corner Of Mine Wouldn’t Work On Simple Slip Drills I Knew I Had To Make Changes. When A Cornerman Forgot Water During The Round Mid Fight I Knew I Had To Make Changes.

CoachArmandAnthony” I Used To Not Get Hit. Then I Changed Things Up A Bit. Had -2- Figure It Out After Getting Hit More And More Each Fight. Decided Not To Take Anymore Unnecessary Damage Made The Mandatory Changes Promised My Faith/Family/Friends I Would Not Take Damage Like The Last Few Fights When A Corner Of Mine Wouldn’t Work On Simple Slip Drills I Knew I Had To Make Changes. When A Cornerman Forgot Water During The Round Mid Fight I Knew I Had To Make Changes.”

Freddie Roach is a legend in his own right. Considered one of the greatest boxing trainers of all time, Tony Ferguson has certainly turned to the right man for assistance to get him out of this unprecedented rut in his career.

Ferguson’s next fight is against Beneil Dariush on May 15th at UFC 262. Roach certainly has a very limited amount of time to implement his wisdom then.

Do you think Tony Ferguson will bounce back with a win against Beneil Dariush?

Tony Ferguson Brings In Freddie Roach To Help Prep For His Next Fight

A staple of the UFC’s lightweight roster, Tony Ferguson is ever looking to improve his game. Despite being one of the greatest lightweights currently on the planet, Ferguson is now riding a two-fight skid. He most recently picked up a loss to Jiu-jitsu ace Charles Olivera, who outwrestled ‘El Cucuy’ over a dominant three rounds. Ferguson also picked up a TKO loss to Justin Gaethje.

However, he is now looking too right his trajectory, and mount another charge at the 155lb title. To further aid him in this endeavour, Ferguson has enlisted the aid of a member of boxing royalty. ‘El Cucuy’ has begun training with Freddie Roach, who is the long time coach of elite boxer Manny Pacquaio. In a recent Twitter post, Roach tweeted “Great first day, Champ.” This was partnered with an image of Roach and Ferguson together in front of a boxing ring.

Tony Ferguson forced his way to an interim title shot in 2020, by riding an impressive twelve-fight win streak. This streak included victories over some of the 155lb elite. Kevin Lee, Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis and Edson Barboza all fell prey to the wrath of El Cucuy. However, it did appear that Ferguson was unable to match Gaethje’s striking prowess when they fought. This may be why Ferguson saw fit to begin training with one of the greatest boxing coaches of all time.

Roach’s other star pupil, Manny Paquaio has been heavily linked with a fight against one of Ferguson’s fellow UFC lightweights, Conor McGregor. McGregor had previously stated that he was set to use his matchup with Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 as a warm up for a fight against Paquaio. However, since being finished by Poirer, McGregor appears focused on returining for a trilogy bout against ‘The Diamond.’

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao put on the biggest boxing event in history back in 2015.

However, it looks like, if Freddie Roach had anything to say about it, the fight would’ve never happened. Prior to the contest, Pacquiao was dealing with a shoulder injury. Both Pacquiao and Mayweather apparently came to an agreement that each man could use painkillers, as “Money” was having issues with his hands.

Unfortunately, the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) wouldn’t allow Pacquiao to do so because he failed to report his shoulder injury on pre-fight medical documents. Roach told The Dan Patrick he tried to get the fight canceled, but was unsuccessful (via Boxing Scene):

“I didn’t try to stop that fight until I found out that the injury was that bad…. that the injury on his shoulder would need surgery to fix.

“So we were going to go into the fight with a bad shoulder, so we had an agreement that Mayweather could shoot his hands up, which he does often, because he has very fragile hands… so he uses a painkiller that he has in his hands so he can get to a fight, and we had [an agreement] that Manny could get a painkiller for his shoulder.”

Not Allowed On Fight Night?

Roach then claimed Pacquiao was not allowed to use it on fight night while Mayweather was:

“But on the night of the fight, he was allowed to use it and we weren’t,” Roach said. “Yes, [Mayweather’s camp knew about the shoulder injury]. There was a lot of money at stake. I still feel bad about letting that fight go, but I wasn’t powerful enough to stop that fight from happening.

“There were big promoters and so much money. The payday was tremendous. But I don’t do this just for the money, I do it for the love of the sport. I didn’t think Pacquiao was capable of fighting his best fight one-handed.”

Mayweather would go on to keep his undefeated streak alive, winning the bout via unanimous decision. For the past few years, talk of a rematch has circulated the boxing world, but nothing official has been made just yet.
