Saturday, Jan. 14 will mark the return of UFC legend Gabriel Gonzaga (12-6) after having been out of the Octagon for nearly 15 months.

Gonzaga will be replacing the injured Rob Broughton at UFC 142 in a heavyweight showdown against Ednaldo Oliveira, who holds a record of 13-0-1 with one No Contest.

UFC 142 will take place at the HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil beginning at 7:00 p.m. PT and 10:00 p.m. ET.

In a recent interview with Bleacher Report’s Garrett Derr, Gonzaga shared how his time away from the Octagon was the best thing that’s happened to him.

I believe the time away from the Octagon was really good, as it allowed me to take care of some smaller projects in my life. It also allowed me to regain my focus on my career as a mixed martial artist.

I’m very happy to be back fighting for the UFC. I’m hungry to get back in there and fight. I want to prove that I can make a big run in the heavyweight division. It’s time to focus on winning my fights and getting back to where I was before I left.

With Gonzaga’s hectic schedule and constant training, he hadn’t had the opportunity to hear directly from UFC president Dana White. Instead, Gonzaga was informed of his return by his manager, Marco Alvan.

I actually didn’t get to talk to Dana. It was all done and completed through my manager, Marco, and Joe Silva. I just got the great news that I was going to be back in the UFC. The best news was that I was going to be fighting at UFC Rio in front of my home country.

Despite being off for a significant amount of time, Gonzaga is confident he will make his return known to all when he steps foot inside the Octagon to take on Oliveira.

However, while Gonzaga may be confident, he is well aware and respects the fact that his opponent has never lost a fight.

I truly believe that I’m the better fighter. But, I’ll need to prove that I’m the better fighter inside the cage, not just by saying it. I’m training extremely hard for this fight against Oliveira, and I’m confident that I will win.

What many fail to realize is that while Gonzaga hasn’t fought in the UFC since UFC 121, he’s remained active and is coming off one the biggest fights of his career. Gonzaga recently defeated Parker Porter by arm-triangle choke in the third round of action, declaring him the Reality Fighting heavyweight champion.

I had a pretty big fight last October when I decided to come back and pursue my dream again. It was for the Reality Fighting heavyweight title. I was able to win by submission and become the new champion at the Casino Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. I was very well prepared for that fight, and I’ll be even more prepared for this one.

Gonzaga will have more than one opportunity to prove to the world he still has what it takes to make a run towards the top of the heavyweight division, as he recently signed a multi-fight contract with the UFC.

“I just signed a four-fight contract with the UFC, and I’m very excited about my future. I want to focus on Oliveira and go step by step all the way back to the top,” said Gonzaga.

A key component to Gonzaga’s return was finding the right training partners to maintain his focus on his journey back to the UFC. Gonzaga found the support he needed, as he’s currently training with Team Link located in Ludlow, Massachusetts.

I’m very thankful for the support from my team here in Massachusetts. We’re having an awesome training camp, and I’m ready to get back in the Octagon. I look forward to representing Team Link in Rio.

UFC 142: Gabriel Gonzaga Makes His Octagon Return in Rio

UFC 142 is stacked with intriguing stories. Featherweight champion Jose Aldo is facing the toughest test of his career. Anthony “Rumble” Johnson will make his much-anticipated middleweight debut. Brazil will play host to its second UFC event in the last year.

Perhaps the most intriguing story is the return of a former UFC heavyweight title challenger—Gabriel Gonzaga.

The inconsistent Gonzaga was once a highly-touted prospect in the organization who even fought for the title against Randy Couture in 2007 after his upset victory over Mirko Cro Cop.

After posting a pedestrian 3-5 record after the win over Cro Cop, Gonzaga was cut from the organization and largely forgotten as a serious threat in the division.

With heavyweight Rob Broughton a late scratch in his scheduled matchup against UFC newcomer Edinaldo Oliveira, Gonzaga became an obvious injury replacement for the UFC and got the call.

With the addition of the Strikeforce heavyweights coming, the heavyweight division landscape will dramatically change in 2012. If Gonzaga plans on ever being relevant again, he will need to capitalize on the opportunity.

Gonzaga’s opponent, Edinaldo Oliveira, won’t be an easy out.

Oliveira has an impressive 13-0-1 (1 NC) record while fighting exclusively in Brazil. Oliveira has the power to pull off an upset knockout of his own and will force Gonzaga to use his impressive jiu-jitsu to win the fight.

Will UFC 142 be Gonzaga’s first step back to relevance? Or his last stand in the organization?

Better Know a Fighter: UFC 142 Newcomer Edinaldo Oliveira

(Edinaldo Oliveira vs. Jair Goncalves, 9/16/11; two more videos are after the jump.)

A longtime friend and training partner of Junior Dos Santos, undefeated heavyweight prospect Edinaldo Oliveira will be making his UFC debut on the preliminary card of this Saturday’s UFC 142 show, taking on the returning Gabriel Gonzaga. The 27-year-old jiu-jitsu black belt hails from Bahia, Brazil, and carries a record of 13-0-1 (with one no-contest) including eight knockouts and two submissions.

Oliveira’s nickname, “Lula Molusco,” is the name of the Squidward character in the Brazilian version of Spongebob Squarepants. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. We’re hoping that’s due to his lanky 6’7″ frame, and not his voice. After securing free education through a security guard job at a Brazilian college, Oliveira studied criminal law, hoping to become an attorney, but had to suspend his studies to devote more attention to his fight career.

Oliveira’s personal life has been affected by the illness of his father, who has been battling cancer: “Training has been a little tough because obviously I want to take care of my Dad,” Oliveira said. “I’d like nothing more than to be able to give him a win given everything he’s going through.”

Junior Dos Santos adds: ”He’s a very distinct fighter and his reach is a great tool he has. He and I spar a lot and his reach definitely makes things a lot harder for me. I think that will be the same for any opponent they put before him…I expect a good show from him. He’s ready for this and I think he’ll put on a very good show.”

The Cro Cop killer will soon be making his return to the Octagon.

According to mmaweekly.com, Gabriel Gonzaga has signed a new four-fight deal with the UFC and will return at UFC 142 to face off against Edinaldo Oliveira.

Gonzaga comes in as an injury replacement for Rob Broughton, who was forced off the card with an injury on Friday.

Gonzaga was last seen in the Octagon at UFC 121, where he was beaten by Brendan Schaub via unanimous decision.

Before that, he had fought—and lost to—Junior dos Santos, Randy Couture, Shane Carwin and Fabricio Werdum twice.

Overall, he racked up a 7-5 UFC record, with his most notable win being a head kick knockout of Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 70.

Most recently, he defeated Parker Porter via a third-round arm-triangle choke at Reality Fighting Championships to win the heavyweight title.

UFC 142 goes down on January 14 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
