At long last, Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin did battle last night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fight, which was a highly anticipated one, was an entertaining back-and-forth war, but it ended in controversy, as the judges ruled it a draw. Despite may feeling as if Golovkin was the clear winner, many in the combat sports world also seem to feel as if a draw is a reasonable score, although one judge’s scorecard has received quite a bit of criticism.

Adalaide Byrd scored the fight 118-110 for “Canelo”, and Bob Bennet, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, said that she simply had a ‘bad day’:

“Adalaide, in my estimation, is an outstanding judge. She’s done over 115 title fights and/or elimination bouts. She does a great deal of our training. Takes a lot of our judges under her wing. I think being a judge is a very challenging position,” Bennett told ESPN’s Dan Rafael.

“Unfortunately, Adalaide was a little wide. I’m not making any excuses. I think she’s an outstanding judge, and in any business, sometimes you have a bad day. She saw the fight differently. It happens,” he concluded.

In combat sports, we often see questionable decisions made by judges, but how did you score the bout between Alvarez and Golovkin?

Judging played a pivotal role in one of the biggest boxing matches of 2017, so much so that an otherwise exciting fight actually ended up leaving a sour taste in fight fans’ mouths.

While Gennady Golovkin’s signature pressure seemed to have won him yet another fight, the judges’ scorecards felt as though he and Canelo Alvarez fought to a draw.

Boxers and mixed martial artists alike took to Twitter immediately after the draw was announced and as you can imagine, none of them were happy about the result.

Did GGG do enough to bea Alvarez? Or do you agree with the judges’ scorecards?

Boxing purists’ most anticipated fight of the year ended with one of the most disappointing decisions that could have come out of the bout.

Mexican mega-star Canelo Alvarez has laid waste to the majority of those who have stepped into the squared circle against him, with the exception of 50-0 Floyd Mayweather back in September of 2013. He then embarked on a seven-fight win streak that concluded with a lopsided decision win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. After the bout, undefeated knockout artist Gennady Golovkin made his way to the ring to confront Alvarez, setting up their highly-anticipated meeting for tonight (Sat. September 16, 2017).

Golovkin is a supreme knockout artist who has won all 37 of his professional fights, finishing 33 of them via knockout. Boxing fans had been clamoring to see their sport’s biggest star, Canelo, go one-on-one with one of the most dangerous fighters on the planet, Golovkin.

When the two finally met inside the ring, it was a fairly back-and-forth affair in the early rounds that saw each man land their respectable shots, however, Golovkin would clearly win the rest of the fight from the fifth round onward. Following the final bell after the 12th round, it seemed as though the Mexican would be handed his second loss in four years. When the judges read aloud their final scorecards, however, it was declared that the fight was scored a Majority Draw.

The finish was highly controversial amongst the boxing community, with many believing that Golovkin clearly won the fight. Both Canelo and Golovkin expressed interest in an immediate rematch. What were your thoughts on the bout? Let us know in the comments!

Oscar De La Hoya Says Canelo Alvarez Would Knock out Conor McGregor in 1 Round

Oscar De La Hoya was openly critical of Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s decision to face off with Conor McGregor on Saturday, and the Golden Boy Promotions CEO offered his two cents after Mayweather earned a 10th-round TKO victory over McGregor in Las Vegas.

De La Hoya told reporters Monday he didn’t watch the fight and said Canelo Alvarez, who fights under the Golden Boy banner, would’ve knocked McGregor out inside of one round, per ESPN.com’s Arash Markazi:

During an interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani (h/t MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi), De La Hoya said he thought Mayweather had allowed McGregor to stay in the fight and win a few rounds early on.

Because Mayweather let him. The first four of five rounds, he let him do that,” he said. “The punches are coming from different angles. It was a bit awkward to watch, actually.”

While many were impressed with McGregor’s ability to hold his own against one of the greatest boxers of his generation, it’s not as if Mayweather is in the prime of his career. He turned 40 in February and hadn’t fought in nearly two years when he stepped in the ring Saturday.

Yahoo Sports’ Chris Mannix thought McGregor would have a much harder time against younger fighters:

Regardless of De La Hoya’s opinion, Mayweather and McGregor will both be laughing all the way to the bank when they receive their full share of the revenues from the fight.

ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael reported Mayweather and McGregor are guaranteed to earn at least $100 million and $30 million, respectively. Mayweather’s purse could climb to higher than $200 million, while McGregor could make upwards of nine figures when all is said and done.

Conor McGregor had the most lucrative boxing debut of all time.

It’s safe to say he has more opportunities than any 0-1 fighter coming off a TKO loss.

Given the skills and mettle he showed while surviving into Round 10 against Floyd Mayweather at the T-Mobile Arena, some of the most frequent themes at the post-fight press conference focused on whether the chatty Irishman would consider a part-time ring gig alongside his full-time MMA commitments.

UFC boss Dana White seemed less than enthralled with the idea his top seat-filler might have other combat sports possibilities, but McGregor himself left the locker room door wide open.

“I have many options in mixed martial arts. I’m sure there’s options that will present themselves in the boxing game,” he said at the post-fight press conference following his loss on Saturday. “But right now I’m a free agent. My name is on the ring. I am certainly open to all options. I am young, I’m fresh and I am ready.”

Given that reality and the number of boxers who’d surely like to deposit a seven-figure paycheck, we came up with a list of possible foes should the Notorious one indeed decide to give boxing another go.
