Seemingly out of nowhere, Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin have reportedly agreed to a trilogy fight.

That’s according to The Athletic who state that the pair have verbally agreed on financial terms to stage their trilogy bout in September. The hope is for it to take place September 12 at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. In addition, Alvarez also negotiated with promoter Golden Boy for enhanced (and undisclosed) compensation for the Golovkin trilogy.

The Mexican was initially expected to face Billy Joe Saunders on May 2 in a super middleweight title unification bout. However, with the coronavirus outbreak postponing events, the parties involved are debating whether to move on directly to Alvarez-Golovkin 3 in September. However, Alvarez facing Saunders in June is also a possibility.

Alvarez and Golovkin previously fought twice in middleweight title fights with both results being controversial; the first was a split decision draw while the second was a majority decision win for the former. Many observers felt Golovkin deserved to win both bouts.

The weight class for a trilogy fight is not decided as of yet. Alvarez is open to fighting at middleweight (160) but can ultimately decide if it takes place at super middleweight (168) if he chooses so.

Alvarez currently holds the WBA and WBC middleweight titles as well as the WBA super middleweight title. Golovkin holds the IBF and IBO middleweight titles.

Who do you think wins the trilogy if it goes ahead?

Gennady Golovkin is set to make his return to the boxing ring, and a middleweight title will be on the line.

ESPN has confirmed that “GGG” will be facing Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the vacant IBF middleweight championship. The fight goes down on October 5 from Madison Square Garden in New York City and will broadcast live on DAZN. Golovkin suffered the first loss of his professional boxing career back in September of last year.

He was bested by Canelo Alvarez via Majority Decision, in what was some very controversial scoring. However, he bounced back with a fourth-round knockout win over Steve Rolls. He’ll try and make it a two-fight win streak since the defeat against Derevyanchenko.

Derevyanchenko suffered the first loss of his professional boxing career in October of last year, dropping a Split Decision to Daniel Jacobs. He got back in the win column with a unanimous decision win over Jack Culcay in April. Now, he hopes to pull off a huge upset with a win over Golovkin.

The Kazakh had the following to say about his return.

“Everyone knows that I consider Madison Square Garden as my home away from home, and there is nothing better than fighting there again. It is old school,” Golovkin said. “On Oct. 5, it’s going to be a good fight. Every time I enter the ring I try to give my fans the fight they want to see, the show they deserve. This will be such a fight.

“We will bring back ‘Big Drama Show’ to the ring of the Garden and to DAZN. Don’t miss it. You will see everything you love in the sport of boxing. See you in New York.”

Derevyanchenko also issued a statement.

“I’m very excited that my team has secured another opportunity for me to fight for the middleweight championship of the world,” said Derevyanchenko.

“I have a great deal of respect for GGG and look forward to proving in the ring that I will be up to the challenge and fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a world champion. Those in attendance at Madison Square Garden and watching on DAZN will see an outstanding battle on Oct. 5. I can’t wait to enter the ring.”

What do you think about Golovkin taking on Derevyanchenko next?

Earlier tonight (Sat. June 8, 2019) former unified middleweight boxing champion Gennady Golovkin made his return to the boxing ring.

Golovkin main evented the DAZN broadcast from Madison Square Garden in New York City opposite Steve Rolls. Rolls was undefeated heading into the contest, looking to make a name for himself off of one of boxing’s most feared competitors. Unfortunately for Rolls, that’s not how things played out.

In the fourth round, Golovkin connected with a single punch that shut Rolls down. He crumbled over onto the canvas and couldn’t get back up for the 10 count. Golovkin was awarded the knockout victory, and you can check out the finish here:

Gennady Golovkin vs. Steve Rolls headlines tonight’s (Sat. June 8, 2019) DAZN boxing event from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The former middleweight king comes off the first defeat of his professional boxing career. Golovkin suffered a controversial Majority Decision loss to Canelo Alvarez in September. Now, the 37-year-old returns to the squared circle against the undefeated Canadian.

Rolls holds a record of 19-0 coming into the fight. The 35-year-old has won 10 of his 19 career victories by way of knockout. If he can get past Golovkin, possibly even stopping the Kazakhstani star, it would be one of the biggest upsets in the sport today.
