Tonight (Sat. September 15, 2018) Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez rematched for the WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight titles.

The pair originally met last year in September, putting on a 12-round spectacle that went the distance. In a controversial decision, the judges declared the bout was a Split Draw. Plans were made for the rematch to take place this past May, however, a failed drug test by Canelo postponed those plans until tonight.

Golovkin and Canelo once again went all 12 rounds, and of course, the decision was a controversial one. Each round was extremely close, as two of the best middleweights in the world laid it all on the line round after round. Though the boxing world is split on who truly won the fight, the judges awarded Alvarez the majority decision victory.

The Mexican star is now the WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight champion of the world. You can check out the full results from the card below:

  • Canelo Alvarez def. Gennady Golovkin via Majority Decision (114-114, 115-113, 115-113)
  • Jaime Mungula def. Brandon Cook via R3 TKO (1:03)
  • David Lemieux def. Gary O’Sullivan via R1 KO (2:44)
  • Roman Gonzalez def. Moises Fuentes via R5 KO (1:44)

Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will collide once again.

Last year, the pair of world-class middleweights clashed in Las Vegas, Nevada in a tremendous back-and-forth affair. The fight went all 12 rounds, and when it was all said and done, many believed Golovkin handily took the fight on the judges’ scorecards.

Instead, some controversial scorecards were read out en-route to a Majority Draw decision. Despite the draw, Golovkin retained his WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight titles. Of course, given the way one of the most highly-anticipated boxing events in recent memory ended, a rematch was warranted.

The bout was originally slated for May 5th earlier this year. However, that was scrapped after Canelo failed a drug test for the banned substance, clenbuterol. Now, the two rivals will once again fight to determine who is the best middleweight in boxing today. It all goes down tomorrow (Sat. September 15, 2018) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo vs. GGG II Rebooked For This Fall

Canelo vs. GG II is back on, folks:

The post Canelo vs. GGG II Rebooked For This Fall appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

One of boxing’s biggest match-ups is back on.

Earlier today (Wed., June 13, 2018) Golden Boy Promotions head man Oscar De La Hoya revealed on social media that the anticipated rematch between his star client Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin has been rescheduled for September 15 in Las Vegas.

The two were supposed to fight for a second time in May, but two failed drug tests for clenbuterol by Alvarez and a subsequent anti-doping suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) pushed the fight back to this autumn:

Alvarez and Golovkin originally fought to a highly controversial draw in September 2017, a fight that came under intense scrutiny due to scores turned in by often-lambasted judge Adalaide Byrd.

The rematch was booked for May, but when Alvarez failed the two drug tests in February, he was given a provisional suspension that ultimately turned into a six-month suspension from the NSAC, who apparently didn’t fully buy his assertion that the positive tests for clenbuterol came from consuming contaminated meat in his native Mexico.

For what it’s worth, multiple fighters have tested positive for the substance in the UFC due to contaminated meat South of the Border.

Alvarez has maintained his innocence throughout and has even reportedly signed up for complete Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) testing to prove it.

He now has his rematch that will make it all worth it.
