The pair will be placed in the co-main event slot, just before the anticipated rematch of Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira.
This, paired with title aspirations from both men already make the stakes high, but Burns wants to up them even more. The 36-year-old called for Masvidal’s ‘BMF’ championship to also be on the line for their fight.
“Come on @danawhite April 8 has to be 5 rounds! Put that belt on the line! Everybody knows It’s only one guy in the @ufc that fights ANYONE! #ufc287”– Gilbert Burns
Masvidal won the title following his 2019 victory over Nate Diaz, with the belt being made especially for the event.
Gilbert Burns vs. Jorge Masvidal
The fight between Burns and Masvidal has been months in the making, with the two exchanges words across social media as well as many rumoured dates.
Burns is fresh off a win over Neil Magny, submitting the 35-year-old with an arm triangle in the very first round at UFC 283. This was the Brazilians return bout after his fight of the year candidate against Khamzat Chimaev, going to war with the undefeated prospect over three rounds.
As for Masvidal, he will hope to get his first win since his win over Diaz, following losses to Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman over his last three Octagon walks.

As the for the chief support, Burns and Masvidal would finally be matched up after months of anticipation and proposed dates.
Recent form suggests that this fight will be one not to miss, as both men have shown willingness to exchange leather on the feet. Burns is fresh off an impressive one round blitz of perennial top-15 welterweight, Neil Magny, sinking an arm triangle in to secure the win.
Burns’ fight before that, against the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev saw Burns gained favour with the fans, going to war and troubling Chimaev, raising his stock even in a loss.
Masvidal does not seem concerned with the Burns’ recent showings, sending out a tongue-in-cheek to the Brazilian ahead of their scheduled contest.
“My brother Gilbert,” Masvidal began. “Nothing but love and respect, I think you’re a great fighter but I’m gonna do you just like I did this meat, my brudda. You’re gonna get cooked, April 8th.”– Jorge Masvidal
Jorge Masvidal looks to return to winning ways
While ‘Gamebred’ remains one of the UFC’s more notable names, the 38-year-old has not one since November of 2019, when he beat Nate Diaz for the BMF title. Masvidal is 0-3 since then has, dropping loses to Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington. a win could see Masvidal thrown straight back into title contention, especially if Leon Edwards is still champion.

Gilbert Burns recently shared his thoughts on whether Sean Brady poses a legitimate threat on the ground, given his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Burns is gearing up to face Brady in a crucial welterweight showdown, set to headline this weekend’s Fight Night event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Durinho” has been absent from the Octagon since suffering a third-round knockout at the hands of Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299 this past March. That setback came just two months after another tough loss, when the 38-year-old Brazilian veteran was defeated by newly crowned welterweight champion Belal Muhammad at UFC 288 in May 2023.
Meanwhile, Brady is stepping into uncharted territory with his first-ever five-round bout under the UFC banner. The 31-year-old American has only gone past the third round once in his career. In his last appearance, he secured an impressive submission victory over seasoned veteran Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night Austin last December, bouncing back from the first setback of his career against Muhammad at UFC 280 in October 2022.
Burns is a formidable force on the mat, a dangerous grappler who has dominated since his return to the welterweight division in 2019, racking up the second-highest number of takedowns in the division. On the other hand, Brady is no slouch on the ground either, bringing his own savage submission game to the table, potentially making their matchup a fascinating chess contest of technical prowess and ground control…
Burns Holds Brady’s Grappling Skills In High Regard
During a recent interview with MMA journalist Kevin Iole, Burns was asked to weigh in on just how dangerous he believes Brady’s grappling game truly is. As a decorated BJJ black belt world champion himself, ‘Durinho’ acknowledged that his opponent is far from an ordinary grappler, noting that Brady trains under the tutelage of BJJ legend Daniel Gracie.
Burns went on to highlight Brady’s impressive grappling credentials, pointing out that Brady managed to defeat ADCC submission champion Craig Jones—an accomplishment that Burns himself couldn’t achieve.
“Durinho” is currently navigating the first back-to-back losses of his career, and he’s well aware that the outcome on Saturday night carries critical weight if he hopes to climb back into title contention.

We finally have the return of Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal on tap nearly 11 months out from his defeat to Colby Covington at UFC 272, as he’s expected to face fellow former title challenger Gilbert Burns at UFC 287.
UFC 287 is to go down on April 8, 2023, live from a to-be-determined venue in Miami, Florida.
Jorge Masvidal has dealt with a layoff as of late, most likely due to his arrest for attacking Covington in a public area about a week after their fight. That said, he wasn’t exactly doing the best prior to his absence, losing his last three-straight to former champion Kamaru Usman in back-to-back title fights, and then Covington.
Before that however, Masvidal was on perhaps the hottest three-fight win streak we’d ever seen out of any fighter.
It began with him returning from another long layoff, this one 16 months, when he faced Darren Till at UFC FN 147. Masvidal was a massive underdog on a two-fight losing skid going into this fight, but the result would shock everyone as he brutally KO’d Till in round two, in front of Till’s home crowd no less.
Masvidal followed this up by becoming the first man to ever defeat Ben Askren, a former multi-time Bellator & ONE welterweight champion, before stopping Nate Diaz in his third and final bout of 2019.
Till was 17-1-1 going into their fight, coming off his title shot to then champion Tyron Woodley; Askren was 19-0, and he became just the second man to ever finish Nate Diaz via some form of knockout, though of course it was a doctor stoppage.
That brings us to his three-fight skid, and to where he really needs a win at UFC 287 to stay relevant in his division.
Gilbert Burns on the other hand has gone 2-2 over his last four following victory over former champion Tyron Woodley himself. That streak begins with a defeat to Kamaru Usman in his title shot, before he’d defeat former title challenger in Stephen Thompson via unanimous decision.
Burns would then lose a unanimous decision to Khamzat Chimaev, a fight that could have went either way, becoming the first man to ever take the Chechen the distance, and he most recently submitted the winningest fighter in UFC welterweight history Neil Magny with an arm-triangle choke in round one this past weekend at UFC 283.
This is going to be a good one! A fight many of us have wanted for some time now.
Does Jorge Masvidal get back to his winning ways, or does Gilbert Burns keep his top five spot in the rankings?

It’s often said that mixed martial arts is a young athlete’s game, and UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns is starting to feel just that.
At the age of 38 and 22 fights deep into his Octagon tenure, Burns remains highly ranked at #6. And the one-time title challenger isn’t done yet, looking to bounce back from a two-fight skid and revive his hopes of a late-career championship opportunity.
And the Brazilian has the chance to achieve that this weekend when he returns to main event a UFC Fight Night at the Apex opposite highly touted grappling specialist Sean Brady.
As he gears up to share the cage with the American on Saturday night, Burns is under no illusions about which stage of his career the matchup is coming at…
Burns On Retirement: ‘I Don’t Know How Much Longer…’
During a recent interview with Grind City Media, Burns looked ahead to his latest assignment on MMA’s biggest stage, which he’s appeared on consistently ever since his debut as an undefeated fighter back in 2014.
“Durinho” acknowledged that he’s certainly deep into the back end of his active career, the days of which are numbered. But he insisted that sufficient gas remains in the tank, something he plans to prove across the “handful of fights” he has left.
“I’m getting freaking old,” Burns said. “10 years in the UFC has been very good, but I don’t know how much longer. (I’ve) still got a couple fights left in me, so I’m not here for a long time. I still think I have a couple of good fights left, (but) not a lot. Not two hands full of fights, but (we’ve) still got at least one handful of fights left.”
One of those remaining bouts gets ticked off this weekend against the 16-1 Brady, who occupies the #8 spot on the welterweight ladder following a kimura submission of Kelvin Gastelum last December.
With a victory over the Philadelphia native, Burns could earn himself another chance to return to the division’s top five, where perhaps a second shot at title glory won’t be out of reach for the Brazilian veteran.
