New bodycam footage of the incident involving UFC welterweights Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington has been released.
Following their UFC 272 bout in March of last year, the feud between Masvidal and Covington would spill onto the street. While eating at a restaurant with YouTube stars, the Nelk Boys, Covington was attacked by Masvidal, allegedly causing a fractured tooth and damage to his Rolex watch.
Following the incident, Masvidal would hand himself into the police, a video of which was also recently released. The 38-year-old would plead not guilty to the charges of aggravated battery and criminal mischief, while also being ordered to stay it least 500 feet away from Covington’s home, 25 feet from his person, and was not allowed direct or indirect contact with him.
New angle following Jorge Masvidal attack
Body cam footage, released by YouTube Channel ‘Real World Police’, shows us the moments after police arrive at the scene. Officers can be seen talking to Covington and social media influencer, Bob Menery.
Covington would describe Masvidal, accompanied by ‘three to four’ men, wearing a mask while attacking him, most likely to conceal his identity. The 34-year-old described Masvidal as saying “you shouldn’t have been talking about my kids” during the attack.
Neither fighter has competed since their fight, which Covington would win via a dominant decision. The pair have also been rather quiet on social media, particularly Covington, and neither has spoken extensively about the incident.
Covington, who is currently ranked No.2, has been tipped to take on the fearsome Khamzat Chimaev in what would be a No.1 contenders’ matchup.
As for Masvidal, he had been rumored to be facing Gilbert Burns but that matchup ultimately fell through. The ‘BMF’ champ has fallen considerably from his breakout year in 2019 and now finds himself ranked No.11
What consequences, if any, should Jorge Masvidal face for the Covington incident?
Gilbert Burns squared off with Khamzat Chimaev in April at UFC 273: Volkanovski vs. Korean Zombie in a bout that surely contends for fight of the year. The only thing that could have made this fight more entertaining is two more rounds, as it was only scheduled for three. After repeatedly trading strikes and takedowns, […]
Burns has not been in the octagon since that barn burner in April, and he had some words of criticism for Chimaev pertaining to his antics as of late. ‘Durinho’ spoke on Khamzat’s weight cutting miscue at UFC 279 and his overall attitude:
“It’s not that he (Chimaev) got lost. He didn’t find himself… Things happened too fast for him. With three fights, he was already the guy. At first, I liked it a lot. He challenged and fought. Then he got out of character. Gives up hitting weights, confusion here, there. I like this style, the guy who challenges everyone. There is no bad time.”- (Transcribed by MMA News)
The Khamzat Chimaev that Gilbert Burns stepped into the octagon with last April has changed very much since then. Many know of the circus that was UFC 279, largely catalyzed by Chimaev missing the welterweight limit by multiple pounds. Following this major lack of professionalism, many fighters and fans agreed with Burns’ sentiment regarding the failed weight cut.
Gilbert Burns on Potential Next Opponents for Khamzat Chimaev
Since his stunning rise to stardom, Khamzat Chimaev has found it difficult to find opponents willing to step into the octagon with him. Chimaev is usually in the forefront of MMA media stating how no one will agree to fight him, and how he is always struggling to find a counterpart.
Since the UFC 279 weight cut issue, it is generally accepted that Chimaev will have a much easier time moving up to the 185 lb. division and facing top contenders there. Via MMA News, in a recent interview with Super Lutas, Gilbert Burns stated that Chimaev recently turned down two high-profile fights at middleweight.
Paulo Costa and current champion Alex Pereira were both offered as potential bouts for Chimaev, and Gilbert Burns offered some insight as to why Khamzat would be very hesitant to face off with either of these Brazilian maulers:
“I took him (Chimaev) down, imagine ‘Poatan’. If I knocked him down, Poatan’s hand must be very heavy. I took him down and he (Chimaev) keeps talking nonsense with these guys. ‘Poatan’s hand is huge, ‘Borrachinha’s is huge.”– (Transcribed by MMA News)
Clearly, Burns believes that his fellow countrymen would give Chimaev real problems in the octagon. According to Khamzat, however, the inactivity on his end is because of potential opponents withdrawing from fight agreements. ‘Borz’ claims that four fights have been scrapped recently due to the shortage of opponents wanting to join him in the octagon.
Gilbert Burns is scheduled to fight Neil Magny at UFC 283: Teixeira vs. Hill for his first octagon appearance since the clash with Chimaev. As for Khamzat, his next opponent will be determined by his choice of weight class.
Do you think Khamzat stays at Welterweight or moves up to Middleweight? And who will he meet next in the octagon? Stay tuned, as one of the game’s biggest rising stars eagerly awaits his next challenge.

2022 delivered another fantastic year of fights for combat sports fans across the globe. New champions were crowned, upsets galore, and some simply beautiful displays of violence.
Whether it was Gilbert Burns and Khamzat Chimaev’s brutal battle to get this year underway or Jiri Prochazka and Glover Teixeira’s all-out war in the summer, there was plenty of excitement to be had for fight fans in 2022.
Given that there was so much excitement to choose from, let us help narrow down some contenders on what the ‘Fight of the Year’ was as the staff here at LowKickMMA submitted their picks on what was 2022’s best contest.
Fight of the Year: Glover Teixeira vs Jiri Prochazka (6 Votes)
Glover Teixeira vs Jiri Prochazka was not only selected as the best fight of the year, but I would even go as far as to say it is one of the best fights I have seen of all time. A back-and-forth brawl that saw both men have their moments during the 25-minute affair.
A large portion of fans believed the aging Brazilian had a slim chance of retaining his title but that was far from the case during the matchup. Teixeira was leading on the scorecards heading into the fifth and final round until the Czech native, Jiri Prochazka, snatched a hail-mary submission to secure himself the light-heavyweight championship.
Arguably one of the best title fights of all time, and with some hope, we may see the two men run it back in the future provided Glover Teixeira can regain the light heavyweight strap at UFC 283.
Honorable Mentions for Fight of the Year
Gilbert Burns vs Khamzat Chimaev (4 Votes)
A close call for second place was taken by Gilbert Burns and Khamzat Chimaev. Opening betting odds would have had you believe that Chimaev was going to run through the former title challenger, and had you seen his previous performances since signing with the UFC the hype was understandable.
Both Burns and Chimaev left it all in the octagon, fifteen minutes of absolute carnage which saw the two men go blow for blow, both being hurt on numerous occasions, kept fans in attendance and those out home out of their seats the entire duration of the fight.
Ultimately it was Chimaev who had his hand raised come to the end of the contest but given just how talented both of these men truly are, do not be surprised if their paths cross once again in the future.
Calvin Kattar vs Giga Chikadze (1 Vote)
Giga Chikadze had begun an impressive run prior to facing Calvin Kattar, a seven-fight winning streak that included finishes over Cub Swanson and Edson Barboza made it somewhat understandable that on recent form, Chikadze opened as the favorite.
However, Kattar took this opportunity to remind the community exactly who he was after his last octagon appearance saw him being simply outclassed by Max Holloway. This time, Kattar did the outclassing. His illustrious movement and technical boxing were put to good use as he laid on the pressure against Chikadze over five rounds in a bout that could have been stopped the further it went. At that moment Kattar killed the hype that surrounded Chikadze and re-instated himself as a serious contender in the featherweight division.

Gilbert Burns believes either Jorge Masvidal or the UFC have lied about a potential matchup between the pair.
It has been rumoured for months, Burns next opponent would be the former title challenger, Jorge Masvidal. However, recent announcements have suggested otherwise with the Brazilian now scheduled to face Neil Magny at UFC 283 in Rio De Janeiro.
Although Burns was extremely interested in the matchup, he explained at the UFC 282 press conference how he was simply tired of waiting around for Masvidal having been led down a road of empty promises.
“I was [surprised] because he said my name multiple times on a couple occasions in different interviews,” Burns said backstage at UFC 282. “He said he was going to do one more fight this year, and I was like, OK, it’s happening.
“But then, s***, it took so long. The way I see it, he was kind of keeping me going. … ‘Oh, later, oh, next fight, next pay-per-view,’ and I was waiting for the fight. I guess it’s a very hard fight for him. He’s coming from three losses to fight me. It’s a good reward if he beats me – if – it’s going to be a good reward, but it’s a big risk, I think.”
Time continued to pass from the initial fight offer, and Burns’ frustrations grew larger with the fight supposedly being agreed since August. After months of delays ‘Durinho’ opted to move on from a potential fight with Masvidal and instead accepted the opportunity to compete in his home country in the new year facing crafty veteran, Neil Magny.
Despite moving on from this bout, Burns revealed his disappointment in not having the opportunity to face Jorge stating that the matchup did not come to fruition for only one of two reasons.
“He was lying, for sure, or Hunter and the UFC were lying,” Gilbert Burns said. “I don’t believe they were. But they offered me Jorge. ‘You want to fight Jorge?’ That was the question. ‘You want to fight Jorge at MSG?’ You know what I’m saying. I said, ‘For sure.’ And then after that, they said, ‘He’s not ready. We can make it Dec. 10.’ I said yes.
“And after that, Jorge told us, ‘He’s going to fight you in Brazil.’ And I said, ‘No, he didn’t say that.’ [They said], ‘No, he said that.’ I said, ‘Well s***.’ Then after a little bit, the fight’s off the table, we’re going to fight another guy in Brazil. A couple of guys declined, and Neil Magny it is.”
Gilbert Burns Aims To Begin Title Resurgence With Victory Over Neil Magny
An opportunity to restart his title push, Gilbert Burns will compete for the first time since his all-out war with undefeated contender Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273. Following Leon Edwards dethroning of Kamaru Usman at the top of the welterweight division the opportunity for the Brazilian to once again challenge for the title has increased significantly. Plotting out his route back to the top, the 36-year-old believes three victories all coming by way of finish shall be enough to earn him a shot at the illusive welterweight title.
“For sure, I’m not going to be chasing Jorge, but I’m going to chase another fight real quick,” Gilbert Burns said. “Not passing over Neil Magny – I cannot make that mistake again. I’ve got to destroy this guy in Rio, and looking for another guy. That’s the goal – to get three finishes, three wins, and earn another title shot.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting)
Masvidal would have entered the hypothetical matchup riding a three-fight losing streak and against an opponent in Gilbert Burns who would provide him stylistically with a tough challenge. Should the Brazilian’s comments be true it makes sense as to why ‘Gamebred’ may have not been so eager to return to the octagon.
