Neil Magny Gilbert Burns

After a phenomenal showing at UFC Vegas 64 by Neil Magny, he didn’t hesitate in calling out former title-contender Gilbert Burns. ‘Durinho’ didn’t waste any time in replying to the challenge, and applauding Magny for his performance during his fight against Daniel Rodriguez.

Magny defeated Rodriguez via D’arce choke in the third round, which cemented his status as the holder of the most wins (20) in UFC welterweight history. This new record dethrones the previous holder, who was none other then the legend himself: Georges St. Pierre.

During the post-fight interview, Neil Magny broke down his reasoning for wanting a fight with Burns, citing his grappling prowess as an interesting enigma for him to test his skills against.

“Gilbert Burns is one of the toughest, or in my opinion, the best grappler in the division right now…” Magny began. “I feel like I did a lot of growing in that fight against Shavkat and I feel like challenging myself against a good grappler like Gilbert Burns is just going out there to show it.”

Gilbert Burns reponds to Neil Magny’s challenge

It didn’t take long for Burns to see and respond to the challenge, giving a reply online via Twitter. The Brazilian made sure to congratulate his fellow mixed martial artist though, and gave praise to Magny’s performance and new record.

“Congrats Neil Magny last time I heard UFC said I have an opponent for (Brazil), if he doesn’t show up, we can dance I’m in (100 percent) to make this Fight happen! For now great finish and congrats on your record!”

Right now, there’s no opponent set in stone to face ‘Durinho’ in Brazil, atleast to public knoweldge. Any UFC fight will typically be announced publically as soon as everything’s finalized, so this could be an indication that contracts haven’t been signed yet, meaning Magny may well be able to slip in and get the fight with Gilbert Burns that he is wanting.

Gilbert Burns, Leon Edwards, Kamaru Usman

Gilbert Burns believes Leon Edwards got affected by the altitude in his rematch with Kamaru Usman.

Edwards took on Usman in August at UFC 278 for the welterweight title and pulled off a shocking upset to dethrone the former pound-for-pound king in the final minute of the bout. After an early takedown scored by Edwards, he got largely dominated by Usman until he connected with a huge head kick.

Following the outcome, UFC president Dana White expressed his interest in booking an immediate trilogy fight.

Gilbert Burns shares the ‘big factor’ in prediction for Leon Edwards v Kamaru Usman 3

In an interview with MMA Junkie, Burns shares his breakdown of Edwards’ rematch with Usman at UFC 278.

“It’s going to be a hard fight,” Burns said about the trilogy (ht BJPenn.com). “Right now, we’ve got to see how Kamaru comes back. He seems pretty OK with the situation, a little bit released, that pressure, carrying the belt, but I see a lot of factors a lot of people didn’t see. The way I see it, Leon had a very good first round – took him down, mount, got his back.

I think he kind of gassed out a little bit because of the altitude in Salt Lake. I think that was a big factor in that fight. That’s why Kamaru was able to dig deep, got back, dominated a couple of rounds. But Leon had the technique. You saw all the studies. He was drilling that a lot.”

Burns believes it will be a close one

‘Durinho’ believes the third fight will be closer than their last encounter and can see Edwards retaining his title.

“I just think it’s going to be another close one, especially if they go to London. Yeah, it’s going to be a tough one. I still think it’s a 50-50 fight – both guys [have] got a chance. But in London, with that preparation, with the mindset now, I think Leon might get the best. It’s going to be a close one.”

Gilbert Burns hopes that Khamzat Chimaev will be staying in the welterweight division, instead of making the move to middleweight.

Chimaev ran into some difficulties when he missed weight for his last bout against Nate Diaz at welterweight. The biggest issue was that Chimaev was almost nine pounds overweight for his fight. Thus raises the question, can Chimaev continue to make weight at welterweight for future bouts?

Dana White had hoped that Chimaev would make a move to middleweight, but he also didn’t shoot down the notion of Chimaev sticking around at welterweight. White did encourage Chimaev to pick a weight class and stay to it.

Gilbert Burns gave Chimaev his toughest fight to this point of his career and hopes that he stays in the welterweight division

“I think he’s just too young. A lot of hype, a lot of things. … I lost a couple of fights because I had a very bad weight cut, but I still make the weight, you know? I don’t know, he’s just got to man up. Make sure he gets good mentors, good managers, good coaches, and people that gonna tell him the truth and help him be the best he can be, and honor the contract when he signs it.” Burns said in an interview with MMA Junkie.

While Burns believes that many fighters in his division are celebrating Chimaev’s move to middleweight, he would like him to stay. Burns has said since their fight ended, that he wanted another shot at the Swede. The fight was razor thin and could have gone either way on the judge’s scorecards.

“I hope so,” Burns said regards to Chimaev remaining at welterweight. “I know a lot of guys were celebrating that he’s going up. No, I want him to stay at 170. I think he can stay, just got to be disciplined, (but) it’s not just discipline. If you sign a contract and you put your name on it, you sign it, you gotta own it. You gotta be a man.”

Would you like to see Chimaev stay in the welterweight division, or fully commit to the middleweight move?

Gilbert Burns is backing his fellow Brazilian fighter, Charles Oliveira, as he says, “I do think Charles is going to win.”

The hype for UFC 280 has been through the roof as uncrowned champ, Charles Oliveira, takes on Islam Makhachev to determine who is the best Lightweight on the planet. Many believe Islam is the next coming of Khabib Nurmagomedov, but Gilbert Burns isn’t one of these people.

In an interview with All Star Sports, Burns had the following to say about Makhachev.

“I heard Makhachev is very very good. He finishes a lot of guys and has a very good submission game, better than Khabib’s. But the numbers don’t say that. A lot of guys say Makhachev is really good and this and that, but the numbers doesn’t say that. People say he’s the new Khabib, but no, he’s not Khabib. He lost by knockout. He got taken down by Thiago Moises.”

Gilbert Burns believes Oliveira can strike with the best of them

“People say ‘Oh he [Oliviera] got dropped’ yeah he got dropped, but he strike toe to toe with Chandler, he strike toe to toe with Gatheje, he strike toe to toe with Dustin. Who does that? Yeah, McGregor did, and he got knocked out. Oh, Eddie Alvarez did, and he got knocked out. He did toe to toe with best strikes and beat every single one of them.”

Striking could be the x-factor in the upcoming Lightweight title bout, as Islam is known primarily for his grappling. A point Gilbert Burns made sure to make.

“He doesn’t have lot of finishes. Yeah, he finished Dan Hooker, and he did finish Moises. But look at the finish Charles has. Charles’ curriculum is way better than Islam’s. Charles’ striking is way better than Islam’s.”

Another factor is the ability of Oliviera to withstand a tough back and forth, as pretty much in all his recent bouts, Oliviera had to come back from some adversity. This could be a major advantage for Oliviera, according to Gilbert Burns.

“Charles is on very good momentum. I do think Charles is going to win. I don’t think it’s going to be easy. I think Charles will find a way to put himself in a war. It’s going to be a war, and I do believe Charles is going to win.”

There has been recent animosity between Oliviera and Makhachev as Oliviera believes he’s being disrespected. So, we’re sure to see the best version of both fighters as the Lightweight title takes place on October 22nd in Abu Dhabi.
