Khamzat Chimaev, Gilbert Burns

Gilbert Burns hopes that Khamzat Chimaev will be staying in the welterweight division, instead of making the move to middleweight.

Chimaev ran into some difficulties when he missed weight for his last bout against Nate Diaz at welterweight. The biggest issue was that Chimaev was almost nine pounds overweight for his fight. Thus raises the question, can Chimaev continue to make weight at welterweight for future bouts?

Dana White had hoped that Chimaev would make a move to middleweight, but he also didn’t shoot down the notion of Chimaev sticking around at welterweight. White did encourage Chimaev to pick a weight class and stay to it.

Gilbert Burns gave Chimaev his toughest fight to this point of his career and hopes that he stays in the welterweight division

“I think he’s just too young. A lot of hype, a lot of things. … I lost a couple of fights because I had a very bad weight cut, but I still make the weight, you know? I don’t know, he’s just got to man up. Make sure he gets good mentors, good managers, good coaches, and people that gonna tell him the truth and help him be the best he can be, and honor the contract when he signs it.” Burns said in an interview with MMA Junkie.

While Burns believes that many fighters in his division are celebrating Chimaev’s move to middleweight, he would like him to stay. Burns has said since their fight ended, that he wanted another shot at the Swede. The fight was razor thin and could have gone either way on the judge’s scorecards.

“I hope so,” Burns said regards to Chimaev remaining at welterweight. “I know a lot of guys were celebrating that he’s going up. No, I want him to stay at 170. I think he can stay, just got to be disciplined, (but) it’s not just discipline. If you sign a contract and you put your name on it, you sign it, you gotta own it. You gotta be a man.”

Would you like to see Chimaev stay in the welterweight division, or fully commit to the middleweight move?

Gilbert Burns is backing his fellow Brazilian fighter, Charles Oliveira, as he says, “I do think Charles is going to win.”

The hype for UFC 280 has been through the roof as uncrowned champ, Charles Oliveira, takes on Islam Makhachev to determine who is the best Lightweight on the planet. Many believe Islam is the next coming of Khabib Nurmagomedov, but Gilbert Burns isn’t one of these people.

In an interview with All Star Sports, Burns had the following to say about Makhachev.

“I heard Makhachev is very very good. He finishes a lot of guys and has a very good submission game, better than Khabib’s. But the numbers don’t say that. A lot of guys say Makhachev is really good and this and that, but the numbers doesn’t say that. People say he’s the new Khabib, but no, he’s not Khabib. He lost by knockout. He got taken down by Thiago Moises.”

Gilbert Burns believes Oliveira can strike with the best of them

“People say ‘Oh he [Oliviera] got dropped’ yeah he got dropped, but he strike toe to toe with Chandler, he strike toe to toe with Gatheje, he strike toe to toe with Dustin. Who does that? Yeah, McGregor did, and he got knocked out. Oh, Eddie Alvarez did, and he got knocked out. He did toe to toe with best strikes and beat every single one of them.”

Striking could be the x-factor in the upcoming Lightweight title bout, as Islam is known primarily for his grappling. A point Gilbert Burns made sure to make.

“He doesn’t have lot of finishes. Yeah, he finished Dan Hooker, and he did finish Moises. But look at the finish Charles has. Charles’ curriculum is way better than Islam’s. Charles’ striking is way better than Islam’s.”

Another factor is the ability of Oliviera to withstand a tough back and forth, as pretty much in all his recent bouts, Oliviera had to come back from some adversity. This could be a major advantage for Oliviera, according to Gilbert Burns.

“Charles is on very good momentum. I do think Charles is going to win. I don’t think it’s going to be easy. I think Charles will find a way to put himself in a war. It’s going to be a war, and I do believe Charles is going to win.”

There has been recent animosity between Oliviera and Makhachev as Oliviera believes he’s being disrespected. So, we’re sure to see the best version of both fighters as the Lightweight title takes place on October 22nd in Abu Dhabi.

Daniel Cormier responds to Jorge Masvidal and lays out a possibility for Masvidal to get back to a title shot, as he cannot just lean on his popularity to get him another title shot.

Cormier and Masvidal had an exchange of words via Twitter last week, as Masvidal claimed Cormier was talking badly about him due to him not coming in and doing an interview on Cormier’s “weak YouTube channel”. Cormier answered back, telling Masvidal’s manager (Malik) to give back Masvidal’s phone.

Cormier claims in his latest episode of ‘3 Rounds With DC’ that Masvidal’s manager reached out to him, and told him that it was Masvidal tweeting out and not him. Cormier had this a few words for Masvidal, after he found out it truly was him tweeting.

“Jorge Masvidal and I have been in the same circle, the same organizations, all the way back to Strikeforce, and I respect him immensely, but I ask all these guys, once again, who are you talking to? Because I would appreciate knowing. Do I stay in hibernation or does that big nasty bear come back to play? I guess I’ll find out soon enough.” Cormier said in the video.

Daniel Cormier also explained how he has immense respect for Masvidal and even laid out a potential path to get back into a title fight

‘DC’ told Masvidal that he can’t just rely on his popularity to get back into a title fight, and his performances and what he does on paper mater more. Cormier brought up how the last three times Masvidal has fought, he was unsuccessful . As he has lost twice to Kamaru Usman and once to Colby Covington.

“How does Jorge Masvidal get to a title fight?” Cormier asked. “One, You gotta fight Gilbert Burns right now. You have to accept the fight. I don’t know if you have been offered the fight, or if the legal issues are keeping you from taking the fight, but Gilbert Burns is out there saying the fight has been offered…You also ‘gotta do one more thing. You gotta fight him (Burns), before the Edwards-Usman trilogy is announced. You ‘gotta be going in the right direction by the time that fight is announced, so if given that opportunity, you can capitalize on a chance someone drops out of the fight.”

Former UFC welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns has expressed his interest in landing a potential title-eliminator against former interim champion, Colby Covington in the coming months, however, revealed that he heard the Clovis native suffered a fractured jaw recently. And may be out of action until March of next year.

Burns, the current #4 ranked welterweight contender, featured in a high-profile UFC 273 main card slot against the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev back in April in Jacksonville, Florida – suffering a close, unanimous decision loss.

The defeat returned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Burns to the losing column after he previously handed two-time title chaser, Stephen Thompson a one-sided unanimous decision loss in the co-main event of UFC 264 back in June.

Attempting to earn a second opportunity at welterweight spoils, Burns, a staple of Kill Cliff FC challenged former champion, Kamaru Usman for gold in February of last year, dropping an eventual third round knockout despite dropping the Auchi native in the first round.

Claiming the promotion were working on a bout between himself and Floridian veteran, Jorge Masvidal next – as well as insisting both he and Masvidal had verbally agreed to the clash, Gilbert Burns maintained that he had heard rumors Covington may be sidelined until next March after undergoing surgery to address another jaw fracture.

“That would be a dream,” Gilbert Burns said of a fight with Colby Covington during an interview with the AllStar. “The rumors [were] that he was very bad. He had a neck injury, the nerves were very bad – he lost a little bit of movement in his neck. He kinda broke his jaw again, he had surgery and the surgery didn’t go well. He’s still doing the PT (physical therapy), he’s not training.”

“If everything goes okay, he’s only back in March – that’s what I heard,” Gilbert Burns explained. “I think it’s true because he’s quiet – he hasn’t said anything. I think he’s out until March next year. Colby is always an option, you know. If you’re asking me what’s the best option for me, I’d say (Jorge) Masvidal in December or January, and Colby next after that.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Former UFC welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns has claimed fellow former title challenger, Jorge Masvidal has verbally agreed to fight him at the welterweight limit next following weeks of speculation, insisting the onus is now on the UFC to land them on an appropriate card.

Burns, who challenged for undisputed welterweight gold back in February of last year, suffered a third round knockout loss to common-foe, Kamaru Usman at the UFC Apex facility.

As for Masvidal, in April of last year, the Floridian suffered his second career loss to Usman, dropping a thunderous second round, one-punch knockout loss to the Auchi native in Jacksonville.

Last time out, however, Burns found himself on the wrong side of a close, unanimous decision loss to the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273 back in March.

Masvidal made his first outing since his unanimous decision loss to Usman earlier this year, dropping another unanimous judging loss – this time in a highly-publicized grudge match against Colby Covington.

Gilbert Burns welcomes the opportunity to fight on the UFC 283 card in Brazil

Given their recent falters, paired with their respective title losses to champion, Usman, both Burns and Masvidal have been consistently linked to a tangle inside the Octagon. And according to Burns, the latter has verbally agreed to a matchup.

“Nothing just yet – a lot of talks about the fight with (Jorge) Masvidal – he verbally agreed, I did too,” Gilbert Burns told MMA Junkie. “They’re (the UFC) just figuring out the date. No date yet. November was too close, … so December or January. At least I know I have an opponent. Just figuring out the date right now.”

“Number one would be MSG in November, but then he (Jorge Masvidal) said no for that date,” Gilbert Burns continued. “Now, December or January, I can wait like 20 more days to go for Brazil. I’m looking forward to go to the Brazil card.”
