Daniel Cormier responds to Jorge Masvidal and lays out a possibility for Masvidal to get back to a title shot, as he cannot just lean on his popularity to get him another title shot.

Cormier and Masvidal had an exchange of words via Twitter last week, as Masvidal claimed Cormier was talking badly about him due to him not coming in and doing an interview on Cormier’s “weak YouTube channel”. Cormier answered back, telling Masvidal’s manager (Malik) to give back Masvidal’s phone.

Cormier claims in his latest episode of ‘3 Rounds With DC’ that Masvidal’s manager reached out to him, and told him that it was Masvidal tweeting out and not him. Cormier had this a few words for Masvidal, after he found out it truly was him tweeting.

“Jorge Masvidal and I have been in the same circle, the same organizations, all the way back to Strikeforce, and I respect him immensely, but I ask all these guys, once again, who are you talking to? Because I would appreciate knowing. Do I stay in hibernation or does that big nasty bear come back to play? I guess I’ll find out soon enough.” Cormier said in the video.

Daniel Cormier also explained how he has immense respect for Masvidal and even laid out a potential path to get back into a title fight

‘DC’ told Masvidal that he can’t just rely on his popularity to get back into a title fight, and his performances and what he does on paper mater more. Cormier brought up how the last three times Masvidal has fought, he was unsuccessful . As he has lost twice to Kamaru Usman and once to Colby Covington.

“How does Jorge Masvidal get to a title fight?” Cormier asked. “One, You gotta fight Gilbert Burns right now. You have to accept the fight. I don’t know if you have been offered the fight, or if the legal issues are keeping you from taking the fight, but Gilbert Burns is out there saying the fight has been offered…You also ‘gotta do one more thing. You gotta fight him (Burns), before the Edwards-Usman trilogy is announced. You ‘gotta be going in the right direction by the time that fight is announced, so if given that opportunity, you can capitalize on a chance someone drops out of the fight.”

Former UFC welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns has expressed his interest in landing a potential title-eliminator against former interim champion, Colby Covington in the coming months, however, revealed that he heard the Clovis native suffered a fractured jaw recently. And may be out of action until March of next year.

Burns, the current #4 ranked welterweight contender, featured in a high-profile UFC 273 main card slot against the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev back in April in Jacksonville, Florida – suffering a close, unanimous decision loss.

The defeat returned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Burns to the losing column after he previously handed two-time title chaser, Stephen Thompson a one-sided unanimous decision loss in the co-main event of UFC 264 back in June.

Attempting to earn a second opportunity at welterweight spoils, Burns, a staple of Kill Cliff FC challenged former champion, Kamaru Usman for gold in February of last year, dropping an eventual third round knockout despite dropping the Auchi native in the first round.

Claiming the promotion were working on a bout between himself and Floridian veteran, Jorge Masvidal next – as well as insisting both he and Masvidal had verbally agreed to the clash, Gilbert Burns maintained that he had heard rumors Covington may be sidelined until next March after undergoing surgery to address another jaw fracture.

“That would be a dream,” Gilbert Burns said of a fight with Colby Covington during an interview with the AllStar. “The rumors [were] that he was very bad. He had a neck injury, the nerves were very bad – he lost a little bit of movement in his neck. He kinda broke his jaw again, he had surgery and the surgery didn’t go well. He’s still doing the PT (physical therapy), he’s not training.”

“If everything goes okay, he’s only back in March – that’s what I heard,” Gilbert Burns explained. “I think it’s true because he’s quiet – he hasn’t said anything. I think he’s out until March next year. Colby is always an option, you know. If you’re asking me what’s the best option for me, I’d say (Jorge) Masvidal in December or January, and Colby next after that.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Suffering a knockout defeat to now-former champion, Usman, Burns had enjoyed a run of four successive victories en route to a title shot – dispatching the quartet of Alexey Kunchenko, Gunnar Nelson, Demian Maia, and former champion, Tyron Woodley

Former UFC welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns has claimed fellow former title challenger, Jorge Masvidal has verbally agreed to fight him at the welterweight limit next following weeks of speculation, insisting the onus is now on the UFC to land them on an appropriate card.

Burns, who challenged for undisputed welterweight gold back in February of last year, suffered a third round knockout loss to common-foe, Kamaru Usman at the UFC Apex facility.

As for Masvidal, in April of last year, the Floridian suffered his second career loss to Usman, dropping a thunderous second round, one-punch knockout loss to the Auchi native in Jacksonville.

Last time out, however, Burns found himself on the wrong side of a close, unanimous decision loss to the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273 back in March.

Masvidal made his first outing since his unanimous decision loss to Usman earlier this year, dropping another unanimous judging loss – this time in a highly-publicized grudge match against Colby Covington.

Gilbert Burns welcomes the opportunity to fight on the UFC 283 card in Brazil

Given their recent falters, paired with their respective title losses to champion, Usman, both Burns and Masvidal have been consistently linked to a tangle inside the Octagon. And according to Burns, the latter has verbally agreed to a matchup.

“Nothing just yet – a lot of talks about the fight with (Jorge) Masvidal – he verbally agreed, I did too,” Gilbert Burns told MMA Junkie. “They’re (the UFC) just figuring out the date. No date yet. November was too close, … so December or January. At least I know I have an opponent. Just figuring out the date right now.”

“Number one would be MSG in November, but then he (Jorge Masvidal) said no for that date,” Gilbert Burns continued. “Now, December or January, I can wait like 20 more days to go for Brazil. I’m looking forward to go to the Brazil card.”

Geoff Neal, Gilbert Burns

Following Geoff Neal’s brutal KO win over Vicente Luque at UFC Vegas 59, ‘Handz of Steel’ took to the mic to call out top-ranked UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns.

Neal finished Luque in the third round of their co-main event bout, becoming the first man to knock out ‘The Silent Assasin’ in a pro MMA bout. In the aftermath of the win, Michael Bisping entered the octagon to speak with Geoff Neal, asking him who he wishes to face next after such an emphatic victory. The response was short and sweet:

“I’ve been looking at Gilbert Burns. I want him next. He’s coming off an L. It’s somebody that’s up there, Luque’s 6 (ranked), I should be 6. Who else is in front of me? Gilbert’s not doing nothing.”

Gilbert Burns accepts Geoff Neal’s callout

Shortly after the callout, Gilbert Burns, who is a close friend and training partner with Luque, responded. ‘Durinho’ stated he would be interested in the matchup, assuming the fight with Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal does not come to fruition. In a Twitter post, he had the following to say:

“Finally someone called me out! About time! Congrats @handzofsteelmma. Let’s see if Jorge will show up! Otherwise we might dance #UFCVegas59.”

Gilbert Burns is currently coming off an extremely competitive decision loss to the rapidly rising welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev. He sits at No.4 in the 170lb top 15, likely just ahead of Neal come the Tuesday rankings update. A fight with Neal would make a lot of sense, as well as giving Burns a chance to avenge his fallen teammate.

Khamzat Chimaev does not see Gilbert Burns as championship quality.

The top-ranked welterweight contender Chimaev is coming off an all-time classic brawl with the former title challenger Burns. Although Chimaev came out on top in a razor-thin decision win, Burns delivered on the expectation of the bout being Chimaev’s toughest test at UFC 273 in April.

It was one of the fights where neither guy seemed to lose any steam. Burns became an instant fan favorite for his brave performance and did not lose any stock even though he was defeated.

Khamzat Chimaev argues Gilbert Burns will never be champion

In an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Khamzat Chimaev explained that his fight with Burns made the Brazilian popular. While Chimaev was upset that he couldn’t get the finish as he had in all of his prior bouts, he bashed “Durinho” for being content with the outcome.

“The guy [Burns], I make him famous,” Chimaev said (H/T MMA News). “The guy was a nobody, you know, before me,” Chimaev said. “I make him famous. And he lost the fight, [but] he was more happy. I was angry for that fight.

“I win that fight, [but] I was angry because I didn’t finish that guy. I don’t understand [why] some guys like Gilbert become happy when they lost the fight.”

Chimaev argued that Burns would never become a champion based on his behavior after the loss.

“Going everywhere, doing interviews, and [saying], ‘I’m gonna fight with him again.’ Yeah, we’re gonna fight, whatever, I’ll fight with him whenever he wants, but I don’t see he will be champ, because if you’re happy when you lost the fight, you will never be champ.

“I win my fight, I was like, one month angry at me in training and everything,” Chimaev added. “These things I don’t understand.”

Khamzat Chimaev will return to action against Nate Diaz at UFC 279.
