Khabib Nurmagomedov is making the leap from fighter to promoter, and he’s hoping for big things from his new organization.

Nurmagomedov has been keeping himself busy in his post-fighting career. Following his sudden retirement after his win over Justin Gaethje, he has stayed active on social media, keeping up with fan interaction, and recently bought Gorilla Fighting Championship (now Eagle Fighting Championship) for $1 million. A post about a meeting with UFC president Dana White had some fans thinking he would be making his return to the octagon soon. As it turns out, the meeting was about a whole other kind of business arrangement.

In a press conference held in Russia (and translated by RT Sport), Nurmagomedov elaborated on what the two talked about.

“I had this offer to Dana White,” Nurmagomedov said. “I wanted to make a contract with UFC Fight Pass, to broadcast EFC fights there, kind of like their contract with M-1 but a bit different.”

“The Eagle” plans not to compete with the UFC, but rather work side-by-side with the organization to create a promotion that offers a roster full of talented fighters the opportunity to get themselves seen and eventually latch on with the world’s leader in MMA.

“I wanted to discuss the number of title defenses an EFC fighter needs to get into the UFC,” Nurmagomedov said. “When we sign fighters, we would like the organization to follow them into the UFC. For example, a guy signs for six fights. If he wins and defends his title a few times, we’ll get him a UFC contract, then after he signs we’ll handle his affairs.

“It’s no secret everyone wants to get into the UFC. Other promotions want their fighters to stay. I don’t want that. I want EFC to be a launchpad into the world stage.”

While he wants to eventually see his promotion become one of the biggest in the world, Nurmagomedov knows that it would be impossible to compete with the UFC right out of the gate. He hopes that by building up the careers of fighters that eventually make it to the UFC, the EFC will develop a reputation as a promotion top fighters are looking to join.

“We need at least 10 years to be better than UFC, so we don’t have those goals,” Nurmagomedov said. “A 23-year-old fighter can have six, seven fights, win the title and defend it, then sign with the UFC in just two years.

“That’s a more realistic short-term goal than looking ahead 10 to 12 years just for a chance to become the best promotion in the world. But we do aim to become one of the best in the world.”

It will be interesting to see how the UFC/EFC partnership plays out in the coming years. We’ve already seen how much of an impact appearing on Fight Pass has had for other organizations, as LFA and Invicta have launched the careers of countless UFC fighters and organizational champions. Only time will tell if Nurmagomedov’s organization can do the same for more European fighters.

Do you think Khabib Nurmagomedov’s new promotion will be a success? Let us know!

Ahead of tomorrow night’s exhibition comeback opposite former heavyweight champion, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, decorated former middleweight and light heavyweight titleholder, Roy Jones Jr. has spoken of hopes to finally stand opposite former UFC middleweight champion, Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva in the squared-circle.

Jones Jr. – who features opposite Tyson in an exhibition boxing matchup tomorrow night, has been continously linked with a boxing match against the recently released Brazilian striker, Silva, with a bout between the two failing to ever come to fruition.

The 51-year-old Pensacola, Florida boxer called for a pairing with Curitiba fan-favourite, Silva following his retirement back in December 2017, but as of yet, we’ve yet to see the two stand opposite each other. Given Jones Jr.’s upcoming return and the fact that Silva is no longer under contract with longtime home, the UFC – the possibility of the pairing seems somewhat more likely than maybe previously believed.

Jones Jr.’s callout follows recent, similar welcoming claims from Rizin FF leader, Nobuyuki Sakakiraba, who refused to distance the promotion from a deal to sign the soon to be 46-year-old counter striker, unlike the likes of Bellator MMA, ONE Championship, PFL – and even BKFC.

I have great memories with Anderson Silva from the PRIDE days and in my personal opinion, I think his career took off in Japan,Sakakiraba said in a recent statement.”I have heard that Japan has a special part in his heart as well.

I do feel that I would like to help him fulfil his wishes out of respect for what he has accomplished and what he has done for our sport. I haven’t talked to him yet but I would be interested to see if we can come up with something that makes sense for him to start his final chapter in Japan.

For legendary mixed martial artist, Silva, his gleaming run under the UFC’s banner came to a close at UFC Vegas 12 on Halloween, dropping a penultimate-round knockout defeat to fellow striker, Uriah ‘Prime Time’ Hall in a main event tilt.

While Silva is regarded as one of the most dominant, masterful competitors at the peak of his powers as middleweight champion, Floridian puncher, Jones Jr. is also regarded as one of the greatest boxing talents of all time.

With a 66-9 professional record, Jones Jr. has notably dispatched the likes of Felix Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, Richard Hall, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, Montell Griffin, James Toney, and Bernard Hopkins to name a few.

Chael Sonnen Doesn’t Think Anderson Silva Will Fight Again

Chael Sonnen

Former UFC title contender Chael Sonnen doesn’t believe his old rival will be able to find a new home outside of the UFC.

Sonnen’s feud with Anderson Silva started back in 2010. The lead-up to their first fight at UFC 117 is what cemented Sonnen’s heel persona amongst MMA fans. The American dominated his Brazilian counterpart over the first four rounds before submitting to a triangle choke in the fifth. The rematch two years later at UFC 148 proved far less competitive, as Silva cruised his way to a second-round stoppage.

Despite the harsh words shared between the two during their rivalry, both men decided to let bygones be bygones after the second fight and the fighters have been friendly ever since. In an interview with James Lynch at FanaticsView, Sonnen gave his thoughts on what Silva’s fighting future holds.

Silva’s headlining fight against Uriah Hall at UFC Vegas 12 was largely billed as his last fight. Despite that, after being knocked-out in the fourth-round, Silva insisted that his career would continue. UFC president Dana White was adamant that he never wanted to see Silva fight again, and let the UFC legend out of his contract. In the following weeks, many of the world’s top MMA organizations – such as Bellator, PFL, and ONE FC – have come out to say they also have no interest in letting Silva compete for them. Even the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship has opted out of signing him. Sonnen thinks that is in large part because of the way Silva handled things.

“No, I don’t think we’ll see him fight again because I think those promotions are telling the truth,” Sonnen said. “And I think there’s a much better way of going about it than the way that he went about it. I don’t think you should come out and just offer your services somewhere. I think that you should have a finished product. He should have found a very specific opponent, taken it to the audience first, to make sure the audience wanted it, then added some flames to it, and then dropped it.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Sonnen believes that Silva should have hyped up a fight, drawn the interest of the fans and essentially forced an organization to put the fight together. With so many organizations dropping out, Silva is running out of possible fights and time.

It’s unlikely he is willing to take a massive pay cut, and the only organizations left that could likely afford his services are RIZIN FF and KSW. RIZIN seems doubtful given their close ties to Bellator, and KSW has a number of their own stars they seem content on building.

Do you agree with Chael Sonnen’s assessment? Will we ever see Anderson Silva fight again?

Pereira Adesanya

GLORY middleweight and interim light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira doesn’t believe Israel Adesanya wants to face him a third time.

Pereira holds two wins over Adesanya from their GLORY days and notably holds the distinction of being the only combat sports athlete to knock the UFC middleweight champion out.

And with Adesanya’s continued success — having most recently put away Paulo Costa with ease at UFC 253 earlier this month — more and more observers are eager to see Pereira face him in a mixed martial arts fight.

When it comes to the Costa fight specifically, Pereira was impressed but always believed it was bad matchup for the Brazilian stylistically.

“Even before Adesanya fought Borrachinha, I said in interviews it’d be a tough fight,” Pereira told BJ Penn. “I fought Adesanya twice and I know how dangerous he is. He’s tough, very smart, agile, a complete fighter as a kickboxer, and in MMA.

“Paulo had been doing a great job so far in his career and could win that fight, but it was a bad style matchup for him. He needed to do some changes.”

As far as a third fight with Adesanya is concerned? It is definitely possible in the future, especially as Pereira has expressed a desire to venture into the world of MMA.

Whether “The Last Stylebender” is interested remains to be seen, though.

“I don’t think Adesanya would be interested in that fight,” Pereira added. “I beat him twice and I’m the only man to KO him. We never know what the future holds. It could happen someday.”

Pereira, however, certainly believes he can knock him out again.

Do you think we’ll see the trilogy?

Magomed Bibulatov entered his name into the hat for knockout of the year.

Bibulatov took on Rodrigo Praia in a flyweight bout at ACA 112 on Sunday and made it three wins in a row following an impressive spinning wheel kick knockout that left his opponent out cold.

You can watch it below:

Bibulatov, of course, is a former UFC flyweight who competed for the promotion from 2017 to 2019. However, he would go 1-2 in the UFC, having suffered successive defeats to John Moraga and Rogerio Bontorin which ultimately led to his departure to ACA.

With three finishes since to take his professional record to 17-2, many will question why the UFC allowed the Russian to depart the promotion.

He would certainly be a great addition to the current class of 125-pound fighters in the promotion.

What do you make of Bibulatov’s knockout? Is it the best of the year so far?

Barao

Former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao has a new home.

According to MMA Fighting, the 33-year-old has signed a three-fight deal with Brazil-based Taura MMA. He is expected to make his debut in November or December with another UFC veteran likely to be his opponent in a featherweight bout.

Barao hasn’t competed since a unananimous decision loss to Douglas Silva de Andrade in November 2019. With just one win in his last eight outings, he was released by the UFC soon after.

He was thought to have signed with Serbian Battle Championship earlier this year only for him to come out and deny it as he revealed he was still a free agent. However, he did plan on returning to action with another promotion soon and that now appears to be with Taura MMA.

Barao Not The Only UFC Vet Signed By Taura MMA

Taura MMA have made moves for other UFC veterans as well.

The upcoming Taura MMA 11 event set for October 30 in Kissimmee, Florida, will see matchups including; Rousimar Palhares vs. Sean Loeffler; William Macario vs. Will Chope; and Guto Inocente vs. DJ Linderman.

Most recently, it was revealed that former UFC heavyweight title challenger Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva would also make his debut for the promotion when he takes on LFA heavyweight champion Brett Martin on the same card.

At this rate, we can only expect more UFC veterans to join the promotion.

What do you make of Barao’s move? And all of Taura MMA’s signings?
