Greg Hardy, a former NFL defensive lineman, made his mixed martial arts debut last night in Fort Pierce, Fla., scoring a knockout victory over opponent Joe Hawkins in just 32 seconds at the Rise of a Warrior 21.

“I had a lot of nerves, but it was good to get ‘em out, it was good to just work through it and be in the ring,” Hardy said in a post-fight interview. “I was glad to compete and be back in a place where I can get it out and go at it.”

At just 29-years-old, Hardy could certainly have a future in MMA, but he’s also had to deal with issues outside of athletics as well. In 2014, Hardy was a linked to a domestic violence issue. He received 18 months of probation, but the charges were later dropped.

Now able to compete again, although it being in a different sport, Hardy revealed that he was ‘super excited’. He also made it quite clear what his plans are:

“I’ve been humbled a lot the last two years, I’m just super excited to be able to compete, super excited to be back in the arena, super excited to be the Greg Hardy that everybody knows and remembers, give back to my fans and everybody that gave me so much time and respect,” Hardy said.

“All the way to the UFC, man,” he added. “All the way.”

Joe Hawkins, who will be fighting against Greg Hardy in the former NFL player’s MMA debut at Rise of a Warrior 21 on Nov. 4, unsurprisingly believes he will come out victorious in the bout.

“I’m gonna be incredible,” he said, per TMZ Sports, adding, “I see the referee raising my hand.”

Hawkins, who is also making his professional fighting debut, told TMZ his goal is to fight in the UFC one day.

Hardy, 29, last played in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys in 2015. While he was a talented player, registering 40 sacks in his six-year career, the NFL suspended him for four games in the 2015 season for domestic assault. Hardy had been convicted of the crime but the charges were dropped after Hardy’s ex-girlfriend, Nicole Holder, stopped cooperating with prosecutors.

He was also arrested in September 2016 on charges of cocaine possession.

According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com, Hardy began MMA training in 2016.

“I have a lot of different issues that I’m definitely working through and working on,” Hardy told MMAFighting.com (h/t Okamoto). “I would say [training MMA] helps me channel everything. It helps me just come back down to earth, be humble, because these are machines that I see every day.

“I get choked out, punched in the face and laid out on the mat daily, and that’s not something that a guy my size and my stature with my history has ever come across.”

Controversial ex-NFL player Greg Hardy is set to make his MMA debut next month.

Hardy, 29, will take on Joe Hawkins in an amateur heavyweight bout on November 4. He has been training at American Top Team (ATT) in preparation for his amateur MMA debut, which will take place at Rise of a Warrior 21 at the Havert L. Fenn Center in Fort Pierce, Florida.

The former Carolina Panther and Dallas Cowboy fell from grace after his highly-publicized domestic assault case back in 2014, when his girlfriend at the time alleged Hardy beat her and threatened to kill her.

Hardy received only 18 months of probation and the charges were later dropped after the victim refused to testify.

He played for the Dallas Cowboys after the incident, but was dropped after the 2015-2016 season and has been pursuing a career in mixed martial arts ever since.

“It’s helped me a lot of ways, I have a lot of problems as a human being. It’s not something that you do, just walking around saying ‘I’m perfect’ or ‘I’m good.’ Man, I have a lot of different issues that I’m definitely working through and working on. I would say this helps me channel everything. It helps me just come back down to Earth, be humble, because these are machines that I see everyday. I get choked out, punched in the face, and laid out on the mat daily, and that’s not something that a guy my size and my stature with my history has every come across.

“It’s a humbling experience, man,” he continued. “Actually, it’s making me really appreciative of everything that I’ve had and everything that I have, and the opportunity that I have to kinda come in and show myself as a guy that is not what everybody says on TV, or, ‘he’s not a monster, he’s not a killer, a women beater,’ this, that and the other. It gives me an opportunity to just come in, be a humble guy, and learn, and honestly just be at the feet of all these champions who walk around like they’re just normal guys … and have the opportunity to make myself better one more time, one last time in sports and life in general.”

Hardy will compete at heavyweight; with his 6’4 frame and raw athleticism, do you expect Hardy to make any waves in MMA?
